Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Tales And the servant who follows him closely with so proud a step, does not he by his impudent, rogue-like countenance, by his gaudy and heterogeneous dress, by the free. And easy manner with which he looks around him, stares at all, and admires nothing, recall to mind the servants in Spanish comedy who, true to their master as his shadow, are. In figure far below him, in pride nearly equal with him, in cunning and artifice far above him? He carries under his arm his master's cloak and umbrella; and in his hand a silver box of cigars and matches. Book Three Greek Tales Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Greek Tales Angelica had been looking forward to the trip for months, and her weary, anxious longing to see the Hermes was pathetic to the last degree. When we reached the valley she was standing, lost in thought, and evidently delighted with the scene. I fear the classic memories that should have thronged upon me in such a spot were lost in admiration of the fair Spanish-American before me; but as I turned slowly and reluctantly away, laden with rugs and baskets for our lodging up on the hill, I thought of old Milo of Crotona, who had staggered over this course, a bull on his shoulders, and wondered who and what he was in the days when Agamemnon ruled at Mycenae, and Helen was Queen of Sparta. I remember, too, a hot discussion with Angelica on our way up the furze-grown and boulder-covered hill, in which I appeared at a disadvantage, being warm and cross, while she, as ever, was provokingly cool and indifferent. Book Tales of Three Centuries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tales of Three Centuries Classic Reprint written by Michael Zagoskin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Three Centuries The few explanations which may be of use in this volume will be arranged best, no doubt, in the same sequence as the divisions of the book itself. I may begin, therefore, by stating that the town of Serdobsk can be found on any good map of Russia in the part devoted to the government of Samara, in which is indicated also the river Hopyor, which falls into the Don. Kolchugin's adventures in the first tale were caused by Suvoroff and the colonel's wife on the one hand, and by Pan Dubitski and the magician Tvardovski on the other. Whatever the positions may have been which they held during life, the Russian lady who so clung to her husband, whether from fondness or love of rule, and the unwilling host at Byali Folvark are very obscure persons now, and need no comment. With the other two characters the case is far different. Suvoroff's fame is increasing; even the present year has seen a new and elaborate biography of him by an English officer. Tvardovski, though little known beyond Poland and Russia, will receive justice outside the Slav world whenever his story is fittingly told. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Tales and Other Stories And the Shilling rattled and jumped for joy as it was thrust back into the purse. So here it lay among strange companions, who came and went, each making room for a successor but the Shilling from home always remained in the bag which was a distinction for it. Several weeks had gone by, and the Shilling had travelled far out into the world without exactly knowing where he was, though he learned from the other coins that they were French or Italian. One said they were in such and such a town, another that they had reached such and such a spot; but the Shilling could form no idea of all this. He who has his head in a bag sees nothing; and this was the case with the Shilling. But one day, as he lay there, he noticed that the purse was not shut, and so he crept forward to the opening, to take a look around. He ought not to have done so; but he was inquisitive, and people Often have to pay for that. He slipped out into the fob: and when the purse was taken out at night the Shilling remained behind, and was sent out into the passage with the clothes. There he fell upon the floor: no one heard it, no one saw it. Next morning the clothes were carried back into the room; the gentleman put them on, and continued his journey, while the Shilling remained behind. The coin was found, and was required to go into ser vice again, so he was sent out with three other coins. It is a pleasant thing to look about one in the world, thought the Shilling, and to get to know strange people and foreign customs. And now began the history of the Shilling, as told by himself.
