Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Studies in Shelley: And an Essay on Nature in Wordsworth and Meredith A ower from the unknown God, Promethean conqueror, came; Like a triumphal path he trod The thorns of death and Shame. A mortal shape to him Was like the vapour dim Which the orient lanet animates with light; Hell, Sin, and lavery came, Like bloodhounds mild and tame, Nor preyed, until their Lord had taken flight; The moon of Mahomet Arose, and it shall set While blazoned as on Heaven's Immortal noon The cross leads generations on. Book The Enchantment of English

Download or read book The Enchantment of English written by Dale, Leigh and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Enchantment of English is a study of the teaching of English in Australian universities, from its beginnings in the second half of the 19th century through to the 1960s and 1970s, a period in which universities proliferated and diversified. Written from the belief that every discipline is enhanced by understanding the arguments made for its existence and the conditions in which it was established, the author aims to help students and colleagues to think critically about the impact of institutional location in forming our habits of mind. Amidst these stories of politics, critical debates, scrambling for appointments in specific areas and disputes about the need to satisfy the demands of students and the public for 'usefulness', this history reveals something intangible but durable: the power of the literary text over the imagination, and the power of the idea of England and its writers as a basis and motive for reading and study - hence, The Enchantment of English.

Book Wordsworth and the Formation of English Studies

Download or read book Wordsworth and the Formation of English Studies written by Ian Reid and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous historical studies of English have not looked closely at the similarities of its development in different cultural settings and educational systems. This book provides a cross-national perspective on attempts to establish, maintain, and modify the discursive practices that constituted English literary studies in universities. Drawing on archival sources, it takes three leading institutions as exemplary sites: Cornell University, in the United States; The University of London, in Britain; and the University of Melbourne, in Australia. places, a persistent genetic identity exists that is best understood as Romantic. More particularly, Wordsworth's writings, and a cluster of ideas, images, and attitudes associated with him, exerted a normative pressure on curriculum and pedagogy during the 19th-century emergence of the university and literature as we know them today. They also provided long afterwards a naturalized set of framing assumptions.
