Book Rethinking Wesley s Theology for Contemporary Methodism

Download or read book Rethinking Wesley s Theology for Contemporary Methodism written by Randy L. Maddox and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most surprising developments in contemporary Methodist theology is the degree to which leading Methodist and Wesleyan systematic theologians are reengaging John Wesley, finding his works instructive, provocative, and stimulating for their own theological reflection. Such a broad and purposeful dialogue with Wesley by theologians of the Wesleyan heritage is unprecedented in this century, and much rarer in the previous century than is popularly believed. This volume presents a set of original essays that represent and embody this new engagement allowing the reader to see how several prominent theologians are self-consciously reexamining and reappropriating their theological tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Three Simple Rules, Rueben Job offers an interpretation of John Wesley's General Rules for today's readers. For individual reading or group study, this insightful work calls us to mutual respect, unity and a deeper daily relationship with God. This simple but challenging look at three commands, "do no harm, do good, stay in love with God," calls us to mutual respect, unity, and a deeper relationship with God. “Every year I review the three general rules of the United Methodist Church with those who are being ordained. Now I have a wonderful ordination gift to give them in Bishop Job’s, Three Simple Rules, to start and deepen the conversation as they enter a new relationship with the church. Bishop Job has described “by attending upon all the ordinances of God” to be to “stay in love with God.” It’s a fresh language that speaks especially to long-time Christians and United Methodists.” Sally Dyck, Resident Bishop, Minnesota Area “Three Simple Rules is a new catechism for everyone wanting to follow Jesus Christ. These practices for holy living should replace the membership vows in every church! Don’t let the title fool you. Bishop Job writes, ‘The rules are simple, but the way is not easy. Only those with great courage will attempt it, and only those with great faith will be able to walk this exciting and demanding way.’” John Hopkins, Resident Bishop, East Ohio Area Table of Contents: Introduction The World In Which We Live First Do No Harm Do All the Good You Can Stay in Love with God A Guide for Daily Prayer

Book An Introduction to World Methodism

Download or read book An Introduction to World Methodism written by Kenneth Cracknell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world Methodist community now numbers over 75 million people in more than 130 countries. The story of Methodism is fascinating and multi-faceted because there are so many distinct traditions within it, some stemming directly from Britain and some arising in the United States. In this book, the authors address the issue of what holds all Methodists together and examine the strengths and diversity of an influential major form of Christian life and witness. They look at the ways in which Methodism has become established throughout the world, examining historical and theological developments, and patterns of worship and spirituality, in their various cultural contexts. The book reflects both the lasting contributions of John and Charles Wesley, and the on-going contribution of Methodism to the ecumenical movement and inter-religious relations. It offers both analysis and abundant resources for further study.

  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Methodism in America written by Douglas Strong and published by . This book was released on with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the Revolutionary War in 1776, most Americans had never heard of Methodism; only a few thousand followers of Methodist founder John Wesley dotted the towns and countryside of the middle colonies. This relative obscurity changed dramatically during the next several decades, as a legion of native-born itinerant preachers fanned out on their self-appointed task "to reform the continent, and spread scriptural holiness throughout the land." By the Civil War, Methodism had over a million members and several times that many constituents, becoming the largest Protestant denominational tradition in the United States'a status that it held until the Baptists overtook the Methodists a century later. Established at the same time as the U.S. government, the Methodist church developed along with the American nation, so much so that many observers remarked that Methodism was "the most American of all churches." Today, there are more United Methodist congregations than U.S. post offices, and Methodism exists in more counties than any other denomination in America, demonstrating its geographical breadth. Beyond the statistics, Methodism has shaped and been shaped by U.S. culture, becoming the quintessentially American denomination. It has often acted as a sort of unofficial religious establishment, representing'according to historian Nathan Hatch?"the vast, uninspired middle of American society." Present-day national figures who claim Methodism as their church home include people as varied as President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, Senator Hillary Clinton, former presidential candidate George McGovern, civil rights leader Rosa Parks, and black theologian James Cone. Over fifteen million Americans are members of the Methodist family of churches, which include The United Methodist Church (the largest Methodist denomination), three predominantly African-American Methodist churches, several Holiness denominations, such as the Free Methodist Church and the Church of the Nazarene, and numerous smaller groups. Reflecting the larger American culture in another way, Methodism has faced'throughout its history'contentious issues of power, class, race, and gender, frequently becoming a bellwether for the rest of mainline religion. Since the 1960s, the challenges surrounding such issues have resulted (in the case of The United Methodist Church) in increased polarization and a lack of institutional cohesion. Nonetheless, in spite of numerical declension in some quarters, the Methodist movement in America has endeavored to continue its mission of reforming the continent.

Book Contemporary American Religion

Download or read book Contemporary American Religion written by Penny Edgell and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No single narrative or theory can describe the varieties of religious experience in North America today. The tidy dichotomies of liberal/ conservative, public/private, local/global, and renewal/secularization make little sense once specific congregations are examined closely. To understand the shifting boundaries of contemporary religious expressions, new tools are needed. Contemporary American Religion collects qualitative, on-the-ground studies of local congregations by up-and-coming religious scholars. Ethnography combined with more traditional sociological methods, help make sense of complex religious communities—from Messianic Jews to evangelical feminists, from Gospel Hour at a gay bar to exurban megachurches. This collection covers a wide span of the religious landscape, always trying to uncover new theoretical insights. Essential reading for classes in sociology of religion, contemporary American religion, and anthropology of religion.
