Book Three Plays for the Australian Stage Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Plays for the Australian Stage This selection from my later plays is arranged in chronological order. Excluding my first attempt at writing for the stage, "Tapu," a Maori Comic Opera, completed with the assistance of the late J. C. Williamson, during my engagement with him as literary secretary, and subsequently produced by him throughout Australasia, my talc of plays begins with "Ironside Penruddock," a Cromwellian romantic play. This was my only effort in romantic drama, and since then I have devoted myself to modern comedy. The first in this line was "The Tame Cat"; then followed in order, "The New Chum," a light comedy of the Maoriland backblocks; "The Wasters"; "Galahad Jones," a dramatisation of my novel of the same name; "Mrs. Pretty and the Premier"; and an Australian children's play. Another Australian comedy is now in the arduous process of being re-written. Meantime I have written about a dozen one-act comedies. "The Tame Cat" was produced in Sydney by an amateur organisation on July nth, 1908, and subsequently revived. "The Wasters" was produced by the Adelaide Literary (now Repertory) Theatre on August 27th, 1910. "Galahad Jones," written in 1910, has not yet been produced, nor has "Mrs. Pretty and the Premier," written in 1912, though it is down for presentation by the Melbourne Repertory Theatre this year. In each case the run of the play was for one consecutive night. One of my one-act plays has been produced five times by different organisations, including the Sydney Stage Society and the Adelaide Literary Theatre; another has had a matinee performance in London. A volume of these one-acters is in contemplation. These plays were written for the Australian Stage. One of the many drawbacks to their production is that there is no Australian Stage. These plays do not claim to be Repertory plays: they were written for the Australian commercial theatre-though it must be admitted that, so far, the controlling destinies of the Australian commercial stage have not quite grasped my intention. The reception, and rejection, of these comedies by various Australian theatrical managers has invariably been polite. The publication of these plays is not to be regarded as a claim for their consideration as literature, even dramatic literature. They were deliberately built for the commercial theatre, and, judged by the ethics of the theatrical manager, with some expert assistance from the box-office. they stand or fall. Their appearance in book-form is a mere formal filing of certain attempts to deal dramatically with Australian conditions viewed from an Australian standpoint by the creation of characters essentially Australian. They do not deal with the Bush. My conviction is that the Australian town-dweller is as typically and as distinctively national as the extinct bushranger. Book Our Australian Theatre in the 1990s

Download or read book Our Australian Theatre in the 1990s written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AUSTRALIAN THEATRE in the 1990s is a vigorous enterprise displaying the energies and contradictions of a multicultural society. This collection of essays by leading scholars of Australian theatre and drama surveys the emergence and directions of the new theatrical energies which have challenged or redefined the Australian 'mainstream': Aboriginal, multicultural, Asian-Australian, women's, gay and lesbian, community and young people's theatre; and charts the exciting growth of physical theatre. The contributors assess the impact of evolving funding and industrial priorities, and examine the theoretical and cultural debates surrounding Australian playwriting and theatre-making from the 1970s Vietnam dramas to the postmodern present.

Book Australian Metatheatre on Page and Stage

Download or read book Australian Metatheatre on Page and Stage written by Rebecca Clode and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first major discussion of metatheatre in Australian drama of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It highlights metatheatre’s capacity to illuminate the wider social, cultural, and artistic contexts in which plays have been produced. Drawing from existing scholarly arguments about the value of considering metatheatre holistically, this book deploys a range of critical approaches, combining textual and production analysis, archival research, interviews, and reflections gained from observing rehearsals. Focusing on four plays and their Australian productions, the book uses these examples to showcase how metatheatre has been utilised to generate powerful elements of critique, particularly of Indigenous/non-Indigenous relations. It highlights metatheatre’s vital place in Australian dramatic and theatrical history and connects this Australian tradition to wider concepts in the development of contemporary theatre. This illuminating text will be of interest to students and scholars of Australian theatre (historic and contemporary) as well as those researching and studying drama and theatre studies more broadly.

Book Dorothy Hewett s Drama Memory and Australian Theatre

Download or read book Dorothy Hewett s Drama Memory and Australian Theatre written by Peter Beaglehole and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dorothy Hewett joked about needing a face-lift and sex-change to improve her standing, she drew attention to forces that shaped the production and reception of her drama. Drawing on production of her plays over four decades, and interviews with Hewett’s collaborators, this book reveals how cultural memories in theatre solidify and dissolve. Viewing theatre production as a mode of remembrance, Beaglehole grapples with Hewett as a divisive figure who was ahead of a conservative Australia. Revisiting frequently produced plays, including chapters on The Man from Mukinupin and The Chapel Perilous, as well as rarely-produced works, including Nowhere and The Tatty Hollow Story, this book articulates the ongoing relevance of Hewett’s drama to the history of theatre in Australia.

Book Theatre Australia Un limited

Download or read book Theatre Australia Un limited written by Geoffrey Milne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre Australia (Un)limited tells a truly national story of the structures of post-war Australian theatre: its artists, companies, financial and policy underpinnings. It gives an inclusive analysis of three ‘waves’ of Australian theatrical activity after 1953, and the types of organisations which grew up to support and maintain them. Subsidy, repertoire patterns, finances and administration, theatre buildings, companies, festivals and notable productions of the commercial, mainstream and alternative Australian theatre are examined state by state, and changes to governmental policy analysed. Theatrical forms comprise not only spoken-word drama, but also music theatre, comedy, theatre-restaurant, circus, puppetry, community theatre in several forms and new mixed-media genres: physical theatre, circus, visual theatre and contemporary performance. Theatre Australia (Un)limited is the first comprehensive overview of the fortunes of Australian theatre as a national enterprise, providing the industrial analysis of the ‘three waves’ essential for the understanding of the New Wave and of contemporary drama.

Book Across the Lines

Download or read book Across the Lines written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume of ASNEL Papers covers a wide range of theoretical and thematic approaches to the subject of intertextuality. Intertextual relations between oral and written versions of literature, text and performance, as well as problems emerging from media transitions, regionally instructed forms of intertextuality, and the works of individual authors are equally dealt with. Intertextuality as both a creative and a critical practice frequently exposes the essential arbitrariness of literary and cultural manifestations that have become canonized. The transformation and transfer of meanings which accompanies any crossing between texts rests not least on the nature of the artistic corpus embodied in the general framework of historically and socially determined cultural traditions. Traditions, however, result from selective forms of perception; they are as much inventions as they are based on exclusion. Intertextuality leads to a constant reinforcement of tradition, while, at the same time, intertextual relations between the new literatures and other English-language literatures are all too obvious. Despite the inevitable impact of tradition, the new literatures tend to employ a dynamic reading of culture which fosters social process and transition, thus promoting transcultural rather than intercultural modes of communication. Writing and reading across borders becomes a dialogue which reveals both differences and similarities. More than a decolonizing form of deconstruction, intertextuality is a strategy for communicating meaning across cultural boundaries.

Book Nick Enright

Download or read book Nick Enright written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nick Enright (1950-2003) was one of Australia’s most significant and successful playwrights. As a writer, director, actor and teacher he influenced theatre in Australia for thirty years. Enright wrote more than fifty plays for the stage, film, television and radio, translated and adapted more, and taught acting to students in varied settings, both in Australia and the United States. His writing repertoire included comedy, social realism, farce, fantasy and the musical. In addition to his prodigious contribution to all of these genres, he was a passionate advocate for the actor and the theatre in contemporary society. In this volume Anne Pender and Susan Lever present a set of essays and recollections about Nick Enright’s work for students, teachers and scholars. The book offers a comprehensive study of Enright’s writing for theatre, film and television. Scholars, acting teachers and theatre directors have contributed to this work each illuminating an aspect of Enright’s remarkable career. The discussions cover interpretations of Enright’s scripts and productions, detailed analysis of his directing style, substantial background and analysis of his writing for musicals, as well as accounts of his specific approach to acting and to adaptation across genres. The essays and recollections included in this book will inspire theatre practitioners as well as scholars. Most importantly, this book will inform and enlighten students and teachers both at high school and university about an exceptional career in the theatre.
