Book excerpt: Three Men in a Boat published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers - the jokes have been praised as fresh and witt

Book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems

Download or read book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems written by Galileo and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2001-10-02 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galileo’s Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, published in Florence in 1632, was the most proximate cause of his being brought to trial before the Inquisition. Using the dialogue form, a genre common in classical philosophical works, Galileo masterfully demonstrates the truth of the Copernican system over the Ptolemaic one, proving, for the first time, that the earth revolves around the sun. Its influence is incalculable. The Dialogue is not only one of the most important scientific treatises ever written, but a work of supreme clarity and accessibility, remaining as readable now as when it was first published. This edition uses the definitive text established by the University of California Press, in Stillman Drake’s translation, and includes a Foreword by Albert Einstein and a new Introduction by J. L. Heilbron.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Jerome K. Jerome was originally published in 1891 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Diary of a Pilgrimage' is a novel set during a journey to Oberammergau, in Bavaria, to see the Passion play that is performed there every ten years. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall, England in 1859. Both his parents died while he was in his early teens, and he was forced to quit school to support himself. In 1889, Jerome published his most successful and best-remembered work, 'Three Men in a Boat'. Featuring himself and two of his friends encountering humorous situations while floating down the Thames in a small boat, the book was an instant success, and has never been out of print. In fact, its popularity was such that the number of registered Thames boats went up fifty percent in the year following its publication.

Book excerpt: "When does a man quit the sea?" asked E.B. White. "Does he quit while he's ahead, or wait till he makes some major mistake?" Skipper and the crew seem to thrive pushing for the latter. Sailing alongside killer whales. Flying the Canadian flag upside down while coasting blithely into Victoria. Debating who gets left behind the day they have to squeeze into the three-man lifeboat. Interrogated by the US Coast Guard. Running aground. Losing themselves in blinding sea fog. Standing rapt beneath Taps' benediction as the American flag retires in Roche Harbor. For Kjell, John, Ed, and Skipper, sailing is about far more than simply passing time on the water. It's about the love of familiar faces and the thirst for new horizons-on land or sea. It's about the bond created by the sheer accumulation of memories, just a few of which are in this book. What else could explain why four grandpas (all north of sixty) spend four days navigating the San Juan islands every summer for fifteen years, when only one of them grew up sailing and he (given the opportunity) might cheerfully capsize the boat?

Book excerpt: While they are discussing the possible illnesses they may have, Jerome, Harris, and George all realize they suffer from the same thing—working too much. Upon the realization, the three best friends decide that they must go on a vacation. After rejecting the ideas of a sea trip or country stay, because Jerome doesn’t like the sea, and Harris finds the country to be dull, the men decide on a boat trip. With their bags packed and with the company of Jerome’s dog, Montmorency, the friends set off on a boat traveling along the Thames River. They pass notable landmarks and muse about them, questioning their importance, appearance, and origins. Memories are recalled and shared with embellishments. The three men enjoy each other’s company until the vacation takes turns that they could never expect. With unpredictable weather, comedic pitfalls, and wild humor, no outcome is impossible on this chaotic vacation. Facing their own shortcomings, flaws, and the uncontrollable weather, Jerome, Harris, and George must work together to remain in good spirits and find the silver linings so they can still enjoy their vacation. Though originally intended to be a travel guide, the witty jokes, humorous diversions, and realistic characters portrayed in Three Men in a Boat stole the focus of the novel. Based off author Jerome K. Jerome’s real-life experiences, Three Men in a Boat is a comedy that has stood the test of time. With undated jokes and hilarity, Jerome’s comedic work of escapism, Three Men in a Boat, remains to seem fresh and witty over one hundred years later. Three Men in a Boat is brought back to life with a modern font and a new, eye-catching design. This classic comedy is an essential to any fun collection. Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat offers a short escape from reality and entertainment from even the most unexpected adventures.

This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Men in a Boat, published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome. It is a story of three men, accompanied by a dog, as they travel in a boat up the River Thames. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction. The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator J.) and two real-life friends, George and Carl with whom he often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional. Because of the overwhelming success of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome later published a sequel, about a cycling tour in Germany, titled Three Men on the Bummel. Three Men on the Bummel (also known as Three Men on Wheels) was published in 1900, eleven years after his most famous work, Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog). The sequel brings back the three companions who figured in Three Men in a Boat, this time on a bicycle tour through the German Black Forest. Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, published in 1886, is a collection of humorous essays by Jerome K. Jerome. It was the author's second published book and it helped establish him as a leading English humorist. While widely considered one of Jerome's better works, and in spite of using the same style as Three Men in a Boat, it was never as popular as the latter. Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859 – 1927) was an English writer and humorist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat.
