All the other birds in the sky are fine, but this one is hurt and needs help. After seeing the sun shine on the grass, Leo didn't think twice. His heart was as big as the sun. He picked up the bird with a soft, whisper-like touch and took it home to bring it back to health. Even though Leo's house was small, it was filled with love and warmth. He used old clothes to make the bird a small nest, which he then hid in a spot where the soft morning light could caress its feathers. The bird got small seeds to eat, and Leo gave it water. He was very careful and patient with it. His acts showed what kind of person he really was, which was full of empathy and compassion. It came naturally for him to be kind, like the sun. He spoke softly to the bird every day, telling it stories about Hamlet, the fields, and the sky, where it would soon return. His kind, soothing words were like medicine for the bird's soul. Leo's worry for the bird showed how compassionate he was; this compassion didn't consider how much help was needed, but instead just responded to a cry from a fellow human being in trouble. He knew that all living things, no matter how small, had a place in the universe, a tune to sing, and the sky to fly in. His deeds made people care about others; they showed how generous people can be and how much joy there is in helping others. The bird got better with Leo's caring care over the next three days. Its wings, which had been hurt and weak before, flapped with new strength. Not only was the little bird's recovery a victory for itself, but it also showed how caring hearts and goodwill can work magic. By helping a hurt bird, Leo showed that even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference. It was a lesson that every act of kindness adds up to a beautiful and hopeful pattern in the tapestry of life. We can all learn something from Leo's story about the hurt bird. MacGregor Mathers from ancient manuscripts in the British museums. The work is traditionally divided into two books detailing the Key of King Solomon. The Lesser Key of Solomon [1904], or the Clavicula Salomonis Regis, or Lemegeton, is a compilation of materials and writings from ancient sources making up a text book of magic or "grimoire." Portions of this book can be traced back to the mid-16th to 17th centuries, when occult researchers such as Cornelius Agrippa and Johannes Trithemisus assembled what they discovered during their investigations into ancient texts. The Greater Key [1914] lists and describes a variety of purifications an exorcist should undergo. Instructions are given on clothing, magical devices, and even animal sacrifices. The Testament of Solomon [1898] is attributed to King Solomon of the Old Testament. Written in the first-person narrative, the book tells the story of the creation of the magical ring of King Solomon and how Solomon's ring was used to bind and control demons, including Beelzebub. The manuscripts from which this work was discovered date from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. All were written in Greek. This dating makes most experts believe that the work is medieval. But some scholars argue that it is likely that the work comes from the 5th or 6th centuries. Regardless of the dates, these texts provide an immensely interesting description of how King Solomon tamed various demons to build his temple. The text includes predictions of the coming of Christ, as one demon explains to Solomon that while he may be bound, the only thing that can truly take his power away is the man born from a virgin who will be crucified by the Jews.

Songhay, approximately halfway between the present-day cities of Timbuktu in Mali and Niamey in Niger, became a political force beginning in 1463, under the leadership of Sonni Ali Ber. By the time of his death in 1492, the foundation had been laid for the development under Askia Mohammed of a complex system of administration, a well-equipped army and navy, and a network of large government-owned farms. The present rendition of the epic was narrated by the griot (or jeseré) Nouhou Malio over two evenings in Saga, a small town on the Niger River, two miles downstream from Niamey. The text is a word-for-word translation from Nouhou Malio's oral performance.
