Book Adam Eve and the Serpent

Download or read book Adam Eve and the Serpent written by Elaine Pagels and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Award winner and New York Times bestselling author deepens and refreshes our view of early Christianity while casting a disturbing light on the evolution of the attitudes passed down to us. "Confirms her reputation as both a scholar and a popular interpreter.... Continuously rewarding and illuminating." —The New York Times How did the early Christians come to believe that sex was inherently sinful? When did the Fall of Adam become synonymous with the fall of humanity? What turned Christianity from a dissident sect that championed the integrity of the individual and the idea of free will into the bulwark of a new imperial order—with the central belief that human beings cannot not choose to sin? In this provocative masterpiece of historical scholarship Elaine Pagels re-creates the controversies that racked the early church as it confronted the riddles of sexuality, freedom, and sin as embodied in the story of Genesis. And she shows how what was once heresy came to shape our own attitudes toward the body and the soul.

  • Author : Ken Ham

Download or read book How Could a Loving God written by Ken Ham and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It really isn't a fair fight, is it? The finite against the infinite. The limited against the unlimited? Is God indifferent to my suffering? How do I resolve this anger at God? Why didn't God prevent this from happening? Will I see loved ones again? Or is heaven just a "feel good" myth? People assume Christians have all the answers; yet, in the face of tragedy, death, or suffering, everyone struggles to find just the right words to bring comfort or closure to those in need. Sometimes just hearing "It is God's will" isn't enough. Sometimes just saying "God will turn this to good" seems so meaningless when despair is so profound. Often the pain goes too deep, the questions won't go away, and even the assurance of faith doesn't help. How could God let this happen? How can God love us, yet allow us to suffer in this way? What is the point of this? What is the purpose? In this provocative new book, Ken Ham makes clear answers found in the pages of Scripture - powerful, definitive, and in a way that helps our hearts to go beyond mere acceptance. When you grasp the reality of original sin (and all that it means), it creates a vital foundation for your heart to finally understand what follows.

Book excerpt: Three times in the gospels the question is put as to the greatest commandment in Jewish law. The answer cites Deuteronomy and Leviticus and features three loves - for God, oneself and one's neighbor. What does it means to love God with all one's heart and all one's being and all one's might? What does it mean to love one's fellow human as oneself? To whom in their history and scripture would the Jews in the audience look for guidance on this? Do the followers of Jesus take a novel approach to love? This work addresses twenty-four figures from the Bible to find out, including, Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Mary of Nazareth, Martha, Mary of Bethany, Peter, Paul, and James. In the case of Jesus, who breaks down the boundaries between God, himself and his fellow humans, do these three loves become one?

Book A Detailed Explication of T S Eliot s The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock

Download or read book A Detailed Explication of T S Eliot s The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock written by Harry Eiss and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do I dare disturb the universe? This is a question recognized by people around the world. If typed into the internet, hundreds of examples appear. Many know that it comes from one of the best-known poems of the previous century, T. S. Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. What many do not know is that Eliot dramatically shifted his views at the height of his fame for writing such dark poetry as this and The Waste Land, becoming a sincere, devoted Christian. While his poetry is famous because it expresses the loss of a spiritual center in European civilization, a careful reading of it reveals that he was struggling with his Christianity from the beginning, not rejecting it, but trying to make it fit into the contemporary world. If the reader works through Eliot’s love song for all of the esoteric meanings, as he demands, it quickly becomes evident that he intended it as a struggle between agape, amour and eros. Beginning it with a quote from Dante forces that into place. Though the protestant forms of Christianity have changed their views on these, the Roman Catholic holds fast. Eliot references Michelangelo in the poem, bringing in the great painter of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Most immediately recognize his name and work, but do not realize how he expressed a similar personal struggle between the desires of the flesh and the spirit. Both of them admired Dante’s Divine Comedy, and its inclusion of amour as a means to salvation. Dante’s work is generally seen as the greatest literature ever to come out of Italy. This book is an expanded revision of Seeking God in the Works of T. S. Eliot and Michelangelo. It explores how T.S Eliot struggled with the highest meanings of existence in his poetry and his own life, and perhaps managed to express what has become known as a modernist (and post-modernist) view of what Rudolph Otto designated the mysterium tremendum, the experience of a mystical awe, the experience of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Endlessly illuminating and a sheer pleasure to read.” —Jack Miles, author of God: A Biography Daring to take the great biblical account of human origins seriously, but without credulity The most influential story in Western cultural history, the biblical account of Adam and Eve is now treated either as the sacred possession of the faithful or as the butt of secular jokes. Here, acclaimed scholar Stephen Greenblatt explores it with profound appreciation for its cultural and psychological power as literature. From the birth of the Hebrew Bible to the awe-inspiring contributions of Augustine, Dürer, and Milton in bringing Adam and Eve to vivid life, Greenblatt unpacks the story’s many interpretations and consequences over time. Rich allegory, vicious misogyny, deep moral insight, narrow literalism, and some of the greatest triumphs of art and literature: all can be counted as children of our “first” parents.

Book Did Adam and Eve Really Exist

Download or read book Did Adam and Eve Really Exist written by C. John Collins and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We need a real Adam and Eve if we are to make sense of the Bible and of life," argues C. John Collins. Examining the biblical storyline as the worldview story of the people of God, Collins shows how that story presupposes a real Adam and Eve and how the modern experience of life points to the same conclusion. Applying well-informed critical thinking to common theological and scientific questions, Collins asserts the importance of a real man at the beginning in God's plan for creation, a plan that includes "redemption" for all people since sin entered the world. Did Adam and Eve Really Exist? addresses both biblical and Jewish texts and contains extensive appendices to examine how the material in Genesis relates to similar material from Mesopotamian myths. Collins's detailed analysis of the relevant texts will instill confidence in readers that the traditional Christian story equips them better than any alternatives to engage the life that they actually encounter in the modern world.
