Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Daughter of Liberty Three rides are memorable in the early his tory of the Revolution. One is the well-known ride of Paul Revere, who, on.the night of April 18, 177 5, warned the country about Boston of the intended British raid on the morrow. Less Celebrated in verse and story, but equally worthy of commemoration, was the ride of Caesar Rodney, who, on July second of the same year, rode from Dover, Delaware, to Philadelphia to carry Delaware's vote in favour of the Declaration of Independence, covering the distance of eighty miles in thirty hours. Early in November, I 775, a young English serving boy rode from the headquarters of the provincial army at Cambridge to Kennebunk, Maine, in less than thirty-six hours. Untold in verse or story, its record preserved only in family papers, or as a dim tradition of the Maine coast, the ride of Anthony Severn was no less heroic in its action and memorable in its consequences. Book excerpt: Cultural Revolution Culture, often denigrated as nothing but propaganda, was liked not only in its heyday but continues to be enjoyed today. A Continuous Revolution sets out to explain its legacy. By considering Cultural Revolution propaganda art—music, stage works, prints and posters, comics, and literature—from the point of view of its longue durée, Barbara Mittler suggests it was able to build on a tradition of earlier art works, and this allowed for its sedimentation in cultural memory and its proliferation in contemporary China. Taking the aesthetic experience of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) as her base, Mittler juxtaposes close readings and analyses of cultural products from the period with impressions given in a series of personal interviews conducted in the early 2000s with Chinese from diverse class and generational backgrounds. By including much testimony from these original voices, Mittler illustrates the extremely multifaceted and contradictory nature of the Cultural Revolution, both in terms of artistic production and of its cultural experience.

For she was not made of that material which is proof against the language of tenderness or gaiety, whether addressed to her self on her own proper account, or if not for the sake of her mistress, with whom we must leave her, to impart all the wonderful and exciting things, which she had heard and seen, during her short but eventful absence.
