THREE LECTURES ON MISSIONS I SOME BASAL PRINCIPLES TT is assumed that all present accept the Bible as an inspired revelation of the true religion, and as the sufficient and only authoritative declaration of what is obligatory in Christian faith and practice. In seeking, therefore, a sure foundation for Christian missions, we turn to the Scriptures, and especially to those portions written in the first century of our era, and ask what they teach in reference to the duty of evangelizing the nations, on whom responsibility for this work is devolved, and what constitutes a call to personal service. Other interesting questions pertaining to the method of missions, must be reserved for another lecture. To these questions we find answers partly in explicit precepts, about which doubt is infidelity; partly in approved example, wherein we must consider how far it embodied universal principles, equally applicable in all times and all lands, how far it was modified by the apostolic rule of being in matters of mere expediency "all things to all men," and therefore to be adjusted to ever-changing conditions; and partly, we must depend on inference, more or less trustworthy according to its clearness and directness. I. THE DUTY OF EVANGELIZING ALL PEOPLES. This is so clear, so often asserted, so essential to the whole scheme and genius of the gospel, that urging it here would be superfluous. I. The Teaching of Scripture. In the Old Testament.--Abraham, brought from beyond the river to found a separate family, rejoiced in the promise of a seed in whom "all the nations of the earth should be blessed" (Gen. 22: 18). The prophets, while warning the people against alien influence, saw in the distance the promised seed set "for a light to the Gentiles, to...

Book Mission Problems and Mission Methods in South China Lectures on Evangelistic Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mission Problems and Mission Methods in South China Lectures on Evangelistic Theology Classic Reprint written by J. Campbell Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mission Problems and Mission Methods, in South China, Lectures on Evangelistic Theology These lectures were delivered by appointment of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, in connection with the Lectureship on Evangelistic Theology in the Free Church Colleges of Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen. Portions of the course were also given in the College of the Presbyterian Church of England, then in Queen Square, London, now removed to Westminster College, Cambridge. A few of the Lectures were also given in Manitoba College, Winnipeg, one of the colleges of the Canadian Presbyterian Church. The Lectureship was a two years' appointment, but duty in China only permitted my holding it for one year. Partly in the hope of making up this lack of service I now venture to print these Lectures. A few prefatory words are needed to explain the obvious omissions of this volume. Designed originally as a course of lectures to students heavily burdened with other work, it was necessary to aim at unity of impression rather than at exhaustive treatment. I tried therefore in the earlier lectures to give some idea of the task that confronts the missionary in China, and thence to deduce in the later ones the natural development of the methods of mission work. But in the prescribed limits this could only be done in a very imperfect way. Several important forms of work have been hardly touched on. Especially I should have wished to dwell on the notable work of the Women's Missionary Association through the ladies of its own staff, and through the wives of the missionaries; on the Medical Mission; and on the details of educational work. Without these features the picture, even as an outline, is very incomplete. Again, I have throughout spoken only of the work of the English Presbyterian Mission. But in the Swatow district we have a band of fellow-workers in the Mission of the American Baptist Union. Book Christian Missions and Social Progress Vol 2 of 3

Download or read book Christian Missions and Social Progress Vol 2 of 3 written by James S. Dennis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions and Social Progress, Vol. 2 of 3: A Sociological Study of Foreign Missions The attempt to collate the manifold results of modern missions, and to present in an orderly and comprehensive survey their bearings upon social progress, is a task which has not been free from difficulties; nor has it been even thus imperfectly accomplished, without patient and exacting labor. The original plan of issuing this work in two volumes, made before the magnitude of the undertaking was realized, has now been changed, and it will appear in three volumes of corresponding size, the last of which will contain the four remaining divisions, or groups, of Lecture VI., and also extended statistical summaries giving a detailed survey of missionary operations throughout the world. The student will observe that the full force of the demonstration presented in this treatise does not depend alone upon the measure of social transformation which has been actually accomplished by missions up to the present time, although there is nothing to fear even now from that test, however searching. The argument rests rather upon the evidence of a clear trend or tendency in missionary activities to work for social betterment, and a consequent reasonable assurance concerning the ultimate outcome. If it can be made apparent, on the basis of evidence now discoverable, that the continued success of missionary effort will be almost certain to secure results similar but more decisive than those already outlined, then the hidden glory of missions comes to light. Their power to transform the higher phases of environment and to supply forces which will be effective in modifying and directing social development is thus sufficiently attested. If the existence of a certain definite purpose on God's part to benefit mankind is assured, and His adaptation of means to the end in view is evident; if at the same time progress towards the accomplishment of His designs is manifest, to an extent which justifies the conviction that He has inaugurated a movement which He intends to carry through to a final issue, then unbelief may well give place to certitude. Book Church Missions Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Missions The Lecture is, to a large extent, a compilation from the Writings and accounts of others. It has been drawn from many sources - from what I have read, from what I have heard, and from what I have seen. Deeply interested in missionary work I have for years noted down whatever has seemed to me note Worthy and reliable, or to tend to the elucidation of the subject, Without intending to make any public use of it, and, at times, without quoting, my authority. I jotted down, from time to time, from the writings, or from the spoken addresses of the wise and good whatever approved itself to my mind and heart. The allegory, and to a considerable extent the language in which it is clothed, and the subject introduced have been taken from the works of the late Rev. Henry Newland.
