Book Three Investigations of Extraction

Download or read book Three Investigations of Extraction written by Paul Martin Postal and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this technical monograph, Paul Postal deals with several issues that inexplicably have been treated only marginally in the development of current linguistic theorizing. He focuses on three problems in syntactic theory that are connected to "extraction" -- the occurrence of an element in a distinguished position distinct from its unmarked locus in simple clauses. He examines a largely ignored body of systematic contrasts among known extraction types, the status of the Coordinate Structure Constraint, and the phenomenon of Right Node Raising. Book Remnant Movement

Download or read book Remnant Movement written by Günther Grewendorf and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses two crucial problems associated with the phenomenon of Remnant Movement: First, what evidence can be brought to bear in favor of, or opposing, Remnant Movement analyses of linguistic phenomena? Secondly, what does the presence or absence of Remnant Movement in the syntax tell us about constraints imposed by Universal Grammar on syntactic operations?

Book The Routledge Handbook of Syntax

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Syntax written by Andrew Carnie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of syntax over the last half century has seen a remarkable expansion of the boundaries of human knowledge about the structure of natural language. The Routledge Handbook of Syntax presents a comprehensive survey of the major theoretical and empirical advances in the dynamically evolving field of syntax from a variety of perspectives, both within the dominant generative paradigm and between syntacticians working within generative grammar and those working in functionalist and related approaches. The handbook covers key issues within the field that include: • core areas of syntactic empirical investigation, • contemporary approaches to syntactic theory, • interfaces of syntax with other components of the human language system, • experimental and computational approaches to syntax. Bringing together renowned linguistic scientists and cutting-edge scholars from across the discipline and providing a balanced yet comprehensive overview of the field, the Routledge Handbook of Syntax is essential reading for researchers and postgraduate students working in syntactic theory.

Book History of Exercise Physiology

Download or read book History of Exercise Physiology written by Charles Tipton and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Exercise Physiology brings together leading authorities in the profession to present this first-of-its-kind resource that is certain to become an essential reference for exercise physiology researchers and practitioners. The contributing authors were selected based on their significant contributions to the field, including many examples in which they were part of seminal research. The result of this vast undertaking is the most comprehensive resource on exercise physiology research ever compiled. Exercise physiology research is ongoing, and its knowledge base is stronger than ever. But today’s scholars owe much of their success to their predecessors. The contributors to this book believe it is essential for exercise physiologists to understand the past when approaching the future, and they have compiled this reference to aid in that process. The text includes the following features: • A broad scope of the primary ideas and work done in exercise physiology from antiquity to the present • A review of early contributions to exercise physiology made by Scandinavian scientists, the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory, German laboratories, and the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre • The incorporation of molecular biology into exercise biology and physiology research that paved the way for exercise physiology • An explanation of the relationship between genomics, genetics, and exercise biology • An integrative view of the autonomic nervous system in exercise • An examination of central and peripheral influences on the cardiovascular system • An in-depth investigation and analysis of how exercise influences the body’s primary systems •A table in most chapters highlighting the significant research milestones Well illustrated with figures and photos, History of Exercise Physiology helps readers understand the research findings and meet the most prominent professionals in the field. From studying great thinkers of antiquity and cutting-edge work done by pioneers at research institutions, to exploring the inner workings of all the body’s systems, researchers will gain a precise understanding of what happens when human bodies move—and who influenced and furthered that understanding.

Book Encoding and Navigating Linguistic Representations in Memory

Download or read book Encoding and Navigating Linguistic Representations in Memory written by Claudia Felser and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful speaking and understanding requires mechanisms for reliably encoding structured linguistic representations in memory and for effectively accessing information in those representations later. Studying the time-course of real-time linguistic dependency formation provides a valuable tool for uncovering the cognitive and neural basis of these mechanisms. This volume draws together multiple perspectives on encoding and navigating structured linguistic representations, to highlight important empirical insights, and to identify key priorities for new research in this area.

Book Right Node Raising and Gapping

Download or read book Right Node Raising and Gapping written by Katharina Hartmann and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates two elliptical coordinations in German, Right Node Raising and Gapping. Ellipsis in both constructions is claimed to be the result of a phonological process which is conditioned by prosodic and focus semantic constraints. It is convincingly argued that Right Node Raising cannot involve raising to the right periphery: The alleged movement freely violates any of the well-known restrictions on syntactic movement and it does not alter the scope relations within the coordination. Gapping in contrast is more sensitive to syntactic conditions in that its remnants must be major syntactic constituents. The author carefully examines the close connection between focus and ellipsis in the two constructions. A considered discussion of focus structure demonstrates that the conjuncts are informationally dependent on each other. This co-dependence is also reflected in their particular intonational contour which is argued to be responsible for ellipsis in coordination.

Book Deriving Coordinate Symmetries

Download or read book Deriving Coordinate Symmetries written by John R. te Velde and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-18 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph proposes a minimalist, phase-based approach to the derivation of coordinate structures, utilizing the operations Copy and Match to account for both the symmetries and asymmetries of coordination. Data are drawn primarily from English, German and Dutch. The basic assumptions are that all coordinate structures are symmetric to some degree (in contrast to parasitic gap and many verb phrase ellipsis constructions), and these symmetries, especially with ellipsis, allow syntactic derivations to utilize Copy and Match in interface with active memory for economizing with gaps and assuring clarity of interpretation. With derivations operating at the feature level, troublesome properties of coordinate structures such as cross-categorial and non-constituent coordination, violations of the Coordinate Structure Constraint, as well as coordinate ellipsis (Gapping, RNR, Left-Edge Ellipsis) are accounted for without separate mechanisms or conditions applicable only to coordinate structures. The proposal provides support for central assumptions about the structure of West Germanic.
