Book The Short Stories of Frank Yerby

Download or read book The Short Stories of Frank Yerby written by Veronica T. Watson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Yerby’s first novel, The Foxes of Harrow, established him as a writer and launched a forty-nine-year career in which he published thirty-three novels. He also became the first African American writer to sell more than a million copies of his work and to have a book adapted into a movie by a Hollywood studio. He garnered legions of loyal fans of his writing. Yet, few know that Yerby began his writing career with the publication of a short story in his school newspaper in 1936, the first of nine stories he would publish in the 1930s and ’40s. Most stories appeared in small journals and magazines and were largely forgotten once he started writing novels. This groundbreaking collection gives readers access to an intriguingly diverse selection of Yerby’s short fiction. The stories collected here, eleven of which have never previously been published, paint a picture of Yerby as an intellectual who thought deeply about several philosophical questions at the center of understanding what it means to be human. The stories also reveal him as an artist committed to exploring a range of human drives, longings, conflicts, and passions, from the quirky to the serious, and in a variety of writing styles. With an attention to historical detail, voice, and character that he became known for, these stories give us new insights into this important African American writer who dared to believe he could earn a living as a writer.

Book The Bible in Crime Fiction and Drama

Download or read book The Bible in Crime Fiction and Drama written by Caroline Blyth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible has always enjoyed notoriety within the genres of crime fiction and drama; numerous authors have explicitly drawn on biblical traditions as thematic foci to explore social anxieties about violence, religion, and the search for justice and truth. The Bible in Crime Fiction and Drama brings together a multi-disciplinary scholarship from the fields of biblical interpretation, literary criticism, criminology, and studies in film and television to discuss international texts and media spanning the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. The volume concludes with an afterword by crime writer and academic, Liam McIvanney. These essays explore both explicit and implicit engagements between biblical texts and crime narratives, analysing the multiple layers of meaning that such engagements can produce – cross-referencing Sherlock Holmes with the murder mystery in the Book of Tobit, observing biblical violence through the eyes of Christian fundamentalists in Henning Mankell's Before the Frost, catching the thread of homily in the serial murders of Se7en, or analysing biblical sexual violence in light of television crime procedurals. The contributors also raise intriguing questions about the significance of the Bible as a religious and cultural text – its association with the culturally pervasive themes of violence, (im)morality, and redemption, and its relevance as a symbol of the (often fraught) location that religion occupies within contemporary secular culture.

This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 7701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Excellent Collection brings together Mark Twain's longer, major books and a fine selection of shorter pieces and Science-Fiction Books. This Books created and collected in Mark Twain's Most important Works illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of the XX century - a man who elevated political writing to an art. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name "Mark Twain", was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise.[5] His humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into French.[6] His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—such as the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but in time overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He eventually paid all his creditors in full, even though his bankruptcy relieved him of having to do so. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet made its closest approach to the Earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people reject Jesus as their Messiah? There are many reasons—a lack of understanding of the Bible, belief that the Messiah has not come yet but will come, the idea that the New Testament was fabricated, or belief that humans do not need salvation. No matter the reasons for rejecting or accepting Jesus, it is vital to know the facts. The Anointed One examines ten common objections given in response to the fulfillment of the messianic prophecies through Jesus Christ and then provides biblical and historical evidence to address these issues. Some of these objections include the following: • The New Testament was corrupted over time. • There is no mention of Jesus in the Old Testament. • Jesus did not fulfill the messianic prophecies. • Jesus was a false prophet. • Jesus, along with His disciples, fabricated the scriptures in the New Testament. In contradicting these points, this study presents intelligent, honest, fair, and direct responses to these belief systems using the Hebrew scriptures and the Christian Bible. It cites a significant amount of scripture and features testimonies from Jewish rabbis and individuals who have accepted Jesus as their Messiah. Offering solid evidence for the case that the messianic prophecies were fulfilled through Jesus, the Anointed One, this study invites you on a journey to pursue and seek the truth.
