Book Three Generations of Warriors

Download or read book Three Generations of Warriors written by Leonard A. Robinson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cop's Cop is a hard-hitting, fast moving account of Philadelphia's super-sleuth, Charles Harris. The story begins in the 1920s, when Harris was a flat foot walking his Philly beat, and follows his career as he evolves into the city's top cop. The beady-eyed, bowler wearing cop built an information highway of snitches, whores and priests to develop a Machiavellian modus operandi years ahead of his time. His personal and professional lives intertwined and the young Harris manipulated the misfortunes of the Great Depression into a substantial real estate empire. The moxie and intimidation tactics he displayed in his youth were replaced with street-smart wisdom and crafty intrepidity in his golden years. The older, more experienced Harris ran a Special Investigation Unit before his retirement and was responsible for solving some of the most renowned crimes of the era. Harris' personal life was filled with idiosyncrasies, including a peculiar marriage to one of the city's classiest 'Madams.' Their union comes to a shocking end when his career is shattered and his love is betrayed. In the end, Charles Harris was a cop's cop until his final day.

Book excerpt: It's a great big open world, and the sea calls out with promises of adventure. Endless opportunities and boundless wealth seem to linger just beyond the horizon. But for some, that's still too far. Every society has its invisibles; those not welcome, not one of us'. It is society's nature to divide itself into many tiers. No matter how you arrange them, one tier always has to be on the bottom. On that tier is Ryo Sansen. Ryo is an outcast, an invisible in her society, and for no reason beyond the fact that she had the audacity to be born. So, what is a young girl to do in her position? Why, change the world, of course.

Download or read book Orphan Warriors written by Pamela Kyle Crossley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1600s, Manchu bannermen spearheaded the military force that conquered China and founded the Qing Empire, which endured until 1912. By the end of the Taiping War in 1864, however, the descendants of these conquering people were coming to terms with a loss of legal definition, an ever-steeper decline in living standards, and a sense of abandonment by the Qing court. Focusing on three generations of a Manchu family (from 1750 to the 1930s), Orphan Warriors is the first attempt to understand the social and cultural life of the bannermen within the context of the decay of the Qing regime. The book reveals that the Manchus were not "sinicized," but that they were growing in consciousness of their separate ethnicity in response to changes in their own position and in Chinese attitudes toward them. Pamela Kyle Crossley's treatment of the Suwan Guwalgiya family of Hangzhou is hinged upon Jinliang (1878-1962), who was viewed at various times as a progressive reformer, a promising scholar, a bureaucratic hack, a traitor, and a relic. The author sees reflected in the ambiguities of his persona much of the plight of other Manchus as they were transformed from a conquering caste to an ethnic minority. Throughout Crossley explores the relationships between cultural decline and cultural survival, polity and identity, ethnicity and the disintegration of empires, all of which frame much of our understanding of the origins of the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WARS CHANGE, WARRIORS DON'T We are all warriors. Each of us struggles every day to define and defend our sense of purpose and integrity, to justify our existence on the planet and to understand, if only within our own hearts, who we are and what we believe in. Do we fight by a code? If so, what is it? What is the Warrior Ethos? Where did it come from? What form does it take today? How do we (and how can we) use it and be true to it in our internal and external lives? The Warrior Ethos is intended not only for men and women in uniform, but artists, entrepreneurs and other warriors in other walks of life. The book examines the evolution of the warrior code of honor and "mental toughness." It goes back to the ancient Spartans and Athenians, to Caesar's Romans, Alexander's Macedonians and the Persians of Cyrus the Great (not excluding the Garden of Eden and the primitive hunting band). Sources include Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Xenophon, Vegetius, Arrian and Curtius--and on down to Gen. George Patton, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and Israeli Minister of Defense, Moshe Dayan.

Unsentimental. Unforgettable. Astonishing. Brothers on Three captures the roar of a community spirit powered by blood history, loyalty, and ferocious love." —Debra Magpie Earling, author of Perma Red From journalist Abe Streep, a story of coming-of-age on a reservation in the American West and a team uniting a community March 11, 2017, was a night to remember: in front of the hopeful eyes of thousands of friends, family members, and fans, the Arlee Warriors would finally bring the high school basketball state championship title home to the Flathead Indian Reservation. The game would become the stuff of legend, with the boys revered as local heroes. The team’s place in Montana history was now cemented, but for starters Will Mesteth, Jr. and Phillip Malatare, life would keep moving on—senior year was just beginning. In Brothers on Three, we follow Phil and Will, along with their teammates, coaches, and families, as they balance the pressures of adolescence, shoulder the dreams of their community, and chart their own individual courses for the future. Brothers on Three is not simply a story about high school basketball, state championships, and a winning team. It is a book about community, and it is about boys on the cusp of adulthood finding their way through the intersecting worlds they inhabit and forging their own paths to personhood.
