Book Three Essays on the Potential Economic Impacts of Biotech Crops in the Presence of Asynchronous Regulatory Approval

Download or read book Three Essays on the Potential Economic Impacts of Biotech Crops in the Presence of Asynchronous Regulatory Approval written by Srinivasa Prasad Konduru and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their commercial introduction in 1996, genetically modified (GM) crops have been quickly adopted world wide, but some GM crops/varieties have not received regulatory approval for use in some importing countries, leading to asynchronicity in regulatory approvals. In this context, the international agricultural trade relied on analytical GMO testing which is a statistical process, along with identity preserved systems to segregate GM and non-GM crops. This led to a situation where measurement uncertainty became an important issue as it can lead to potential holdups at the point of import. In this background, the first essay examines the implications of measurement uncertainty associated with GMO testing on the behavior of importers and exporters in a game theoretic framework. In the second essay the market and welfare effects due to the trade disruptions from unapproved GM crops are analyzed. In the third essay the potential economic impacts from the introduction of a new GM soybean variety are analyzed. Based on the analysis, conclusions were drawn on the likelihood of various adoption scenarios, the possibility of trade disruptions, and the possibility of redistribution of innovation rents in the event of asynchronous regulatory approval of the new GM soybean variety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Estey Centre Journal of International Law and Trade Policy has become required reading among trade policy specialists, not least for Bill Kerr's "Editor's Pages" essay in each volume. Kerr has the ability in a dozen pages to engage, inform and entertain the reader with his careful scholarship, interesting choice of topic and highly-readable style. Kerr sets the tone for the volume and whets the appetite for the other articles. Over the ten years of the Estey Journal's life Kerr's pages have drawn our attention to a range of trade-law topics from the golf-club-like voting rules of the WTO to the delights of sipping incorrectly-labeled port. The decision to bring these twenty short papers together in a volume was inspired. Students and teachers will benefit from the convenience of the collection as source material for classes on trade law and policy. But above all, scholars in the fascinating area of the interplay of economics and law in multilateral trade institutions will have the wisdom of Bill Kerr readily to hand.

Book Knowledge Politics

Download or read book Knowledge Politics written by Nico Stehr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that new technologies and society's response to them have created a relatively new phenomenon, "knowledge politics." Nico Stehr describes Western society's response to a host of new technologies developed only since the 1970s, including genetic experiments, test-tube human conception, recombinant DNA, and embryonic stem cells; genetically engineered foods; neurogenetics and genetic engineering; and reproductive cloning and the reconstruction of the human ancestral genome. He looks also at the prospective fusion of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, transgenic human engineering, and cognitive science whose products may, as its boosters claim, some day cure disease, slow the aging process, eliminate pollution, and generally enhance human performance. Knowledge Politics shows how human civilization has reached a new era of concern about the life-altering potentials of new technologies. Concerns about the societal consequences of an unfettered expansion of (natural) scientific knowledge are being raised more urgently and are moving to the center of disputes in society-- and thus to the top of the political agenda. Stehr explains the ramifications of knowledge politics and the approaches society could take to resolve difficult questions and conflicts over present and future scientific innovation.

Book Biological Wealth and Other Essays

Download or read book Biological Wealth and Other Essays written by Krishna R. Dronamraju and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biological wealth of our planet is represented by the biodiversity that surrounds us. Our future wellbeing depends on the care and conservation that we practice to protect and enhance that biodiversity, which resides mostly in developing countries. Yet, the holders of traditional knowledge remain poor, while those exploiting it commercially become prosperous. As we utilize recombinant DNA technology to achieve food security and other goals, serious apprehension has arisen in the public mind with regard to the impact of genetically modified crops on our environment and health. Similarly, the long-term impact of gene therapy is not known either. These dilemmas and their ethical implications are examined in this book in the context of intellectual property rights and international cooperation.
