Book excerpt: The aim of the thesis is to delve into some of the determinants of the supply side of the information market, and consider the possible implications that those determinants can have on societies and political systems. The three chapters are independent from each other and can be read separately. They are three studies on three questions in media economics and aim at contributing to the debate on how information is produced and with with consequences.As the main methodology, I use tools from applied microeconomics to quantitatively isolate relationships between one determinant of the production function of information and discourse, or content, as my outcome of interest. I also borrow to the political science literature and studies in communication to better discuss the pattern emphasized through data analysis.In the first chapter, I consider parameters that affect media capture, and how the perceptions of the likelihood to find a story to disclose and the characteristics of the market influence the different forms of pressures over media outlets over the world. In the second chapter, I look into the influence of money on political discourse and investigates how receiving donations from firms can affect candidates discourse, in an analysis of political manifestos issued by candidates to the French legislative election. In the third chapter, I study the impact of technological change on media content and political behavior. More precisely, I look at the effect of the introduction of digital TV in Kenya on news content and on political preferences during the presidential election of 2017. Hence, the three chapters of this dissertation illustrate the complexity of the media landscape and of the determinants of the political discourse. Building on the existing results from the literature and using a large range of methods, I try to contribute to the general debate on the challenges pertaining to today's world of information and entertainment, in its multifaceted aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My dissertation consists of three essays analyzing the factors that influence the political bias of the news media, from a comparative perspective. I focus specifically on the effects of the economic environment and the conditions that facilitate media capture by the special interest groups, political parties, or governments. The mechanisms of influence include investment in media firms, political advertising, paid articles, subsidies, bribes, etc. I argue that countries with high inequality or small advertising markets are especially likely to have their media captured by political interests. In the first chapter, I argue that high income inequality can facilitate media capture by the rich. As a result of capture, the media advocate a low level of taxation and redistribution, which, in turn, affects voters' policy preferences. The influence of the rich on the media is one reason why income inequality leads to political inequality, and why policy outcomes are more responsive to the preferences of the rich than to those of the poor. I present a formal theoretical model of this argument based on the Meltzer-Richard model of the choice of the level of redistribution by the median voter. I empirically test predictions of my model using cross-country evidence. I find that higher income inequality decreases the extent of media freedom in the country, which, in turn, decreases the level of social spending.

Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive study of the U.S. political process from the perspective of media, voters and candidates. In the first chapter, I analyze the sources of media bias. In the second chapter, I focus on economically self-interested voting. The third chapter studies the effectiveness of negative campaigning. In the next three paragraphs, I summarize these three chapters With the advent of internet, many U.S. metropolitan areas have seen newspaper closures due to declining revenues. This provides the researcher with an opportunity to analyze the microeconomic sources of media bias. This paper uses a large panel data set of newspaper archives for 102 newspapers over 238 months (1990-2009). I find that, after controlling for the unemployment rate and the change in unemployment rate, conservative newspapers report 19% more unemployment news when the President is a Democrat rather than a Republican, before the closure of a rival newspaper in the same media market. This effect is 12% for liberal newspapers. After the closure, these numbers are 3.5% and 1%, respectively. This moderation of media bias after closure of a rival newspaper stands as newspaper size, newspaper fixed-effects or metropolitan area fixed-effects are included. I also find that newspapers in smaller metropolitan areas have a larger moderation in their bias. My findings provide support for theories in which media-bias is demand-driven, as surviving newspapers aim to increase their sales by gaining the former readers of a closed newspaper in the same media market. A long literature investigates the influence of income on voting behavior, but it focuses primarily on presidential elections. We ask whether economically self-interested voting is unique to the presidential elections, or if it also extends to House, Senate and gubernatorial elections. In addition, for each office, we look for the presence of absolute income effects and relative income effects. Voters do indeed appear to vote in an economically self-interested manner for each office, but we show that in all elections but presidential elections, this effect is largely generated by the correlation of income with political issue stances. Controlling for voter stances on a number of social and economic issues, there is little evidence of partisan differences in voting according to income outside of presidential elections. Our findings at once support previous studies, but illustrate that presidential elections are very much a special case in US socio-political behavior. Political candidates commonly use negative TV ads to attack their opponents. In very limited research on effectiveness of negative campaigning, endogeneity problem has not been addressed and trait ads were not separated from issue ads. In this project, I use instrumental variables estimates of the effectiveness of negative campaigning and distinguish between issue ads and trait ads. Using 162 U.S. Senate Elections between 1998 and 2008, I find that negative issue campaigning is effective for challengers in significantly reducing the incumbent0́9s vote, although this effect is not large enough to change the election outcome in lopsided elections. In competitive elections, I find that challenger0́9s negative issue ads can change the election outcome. I do not find any significant effects of negative issue ads by an incumbent, except for competitive elections. Both incumbents and challengers hurt themselves if they resort to negative trait ads (personal attacks).

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays that examine the impact of mass media on outcomes related to elections, technology adoption, and women's welfare. In my first chapter, I examine the impact of a large-scale anti-vote-buying voter education campaign during the 2014 Indian general elections. We broadcast ads on randomly selected radio stations, emphasizing the incentives of politicians who distribute ``gifts'' to voters and the likely economic consequences of electing them. Based on interviews of a large number of journalists, we identify parties that engaged in vote buying in different areas. Using official electoral data, we find that the radio campaign significantly decreased the vote share of the putative vote-buying parties by 4 to 7 percentage points. After the mass introduction of high yielding varieties (HYV) of wheat and rice in 1966, the Indian government aggressively promoted their adoption on regional radio stations across the country. In my second chapter, I estimate the effect of this large informational intervention on HYV adoption by exploiting a natural experiment--the differential time of introduction of radio coverage in different parts of the country. I document a persistent impact of introduction on adoption of HYV rice but only a transient effect on adoption of HYV wheat; consistent with the argument that spatial diffusion of information, a substitute for information from radio, was easier for HYV wheat than HYV rice. In my third chapter, I assess the impact of introduction of cable TV to Indian villages on crowding out of women's social participation, in addition to studying its impact on women's health knowledge, fertility preferences and outcomes, and status and autonomy. To identify the effect, I apply a difference-in-difference strategy using a two rounds of a national household panel dataset of rural households from 2004 and 2011. I do not find any effect of cable TV on women's health knowledge, or fertility preferences and outcomes. While I find that it improved women's status, it had little effect on their autonomy in decision-making and mobility. There is, however, clear evidence that cable TV significantly decreased women's social participation.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of three essays on economics focusing on the determinants of regime change and economic growth. I put the focus primarily on political, institutional, and historical factors. I started working on these topics after studying the importance of regime change and institutions in the modern economics literature. The first essay analyzes how media can be a powerful tool to promote regime change in tightly controlled political systems. I analyze the impact of Radio Liberty, an American radio with an anti-communist slant, on the 1991 Russian elections, which were the first elections in the country, to study the role of Western media on the demise of the Soviet Union. I use a novel empirical strategy exploiting ionospheric variation with the aim of obtaining a measure of Radio Liberty availability in each Russian electoral district. The results show a significant effect of these broadcasts in favor of Yeltsin, documenting that media can play an important role in political processes of regime change. In the second essay, I analyze the persistent effects of the territorial division in Spain between the Christian kingdoms in the north and Islamic Iberia in the center and south of the country during the Middle Ages. I analyze this question empirically using a spatial donut discontinuity design which compares Christian and Muslim territories exploiting the dynamics of the reconquest process undertaken by the Christians which resulted in the Muslim defeat. I find important differences in current municipal economic development with substantial positive effects in Christian municipalities. The third essay analyzes the importance of protests for regime change. I provide empirical evidence that protests have a significant and non-linear impact on the likelihood that a country successfully democratizes. I show that it is for intermediate values of protests that the likelihood of democratization is higher. I present a dynamic model to explain the empirical evidence. The main implication is that protests could play an important role for regime change as long as they are not too high because in the latter case there will be a backlash which will block regime change.

The first analyses the way the difference in incentives between appointed bureaucrats and elected politicians affects public policies they pursue. The second essay examines monetary incentives of the senior bureaucrats. The third essay investigates the effect of mass media on the voting behavior of citizens. The first essay compares the policies of elected and appointed public officials with regard to public employment. I argue that elected politicians are more likely to use patronage jobs to achieve personal political goals than appointed bureaucrats. Results of non-parametric estimation using panel data on local governments in the U.S. confirm this claim. The number of full-time public employees is significantly higher in local governments headed by elected chief executives. For part-time employees, who are less likely to be hired for patronage reasons, the difference is much smaller or nonexistent. In addition, privatization of public service provision leads to a decrease in public employment only in communities with appointed chief executives.
