Book excerpt: The first chapter, Two-Way Fixed Effects versus Panel Factor Augmented Estimators: Asymptotic Comparison among Pre-testing Procedures, provides asymptotic analyses of pretesting procedures when the slope coefficients are heterogeneous across cross-sectional units. Empirical researchers may wonder whether or not a two-way fixed effects estimator (with individual and time fixed effects) is sufficiently sophisticated to isolate the influence of common shocks on the estimation of slope coefficients. If it is not, practitioners need to run the so-called panel factor augmented regression instead. There are two pre-testing procedures available in the literature: the use of the estimated number of factors and the direct test of estimated factor loading coefficients. This chapter compares the two pre-testing methods asymptotically. Under the presence of the heterogeneous factor loadings, both pre-testing procedures suggest using the Common Correlated Effects (CCE) estimator. By comparing asymptotic variances, this chapter finds that when the slope coefficients are heterogeneous with homogeneous factor loadings, the CCE estimation is, surprisingly, more efficient than the two-way fixed effects estimation. The second chapter, A New Test for Slope Homogeneity in a Panel Regression with Interactive Fixed Effects, proposes a new test for slope homogeneity in a panel regression with interactive fixed effects without any restriction on the relative expansion rate of n, the number of cross-sectional units, and T, the number of periods. This test is based on a comparison of the estimated number of common factors from two regression residuals. The first regression is an unconstrained regression with heterogeneous slope parameters. The second regression is a pooled regression based on the principal components mean group method. Under the slope heterogeneity, this chapter shows that the estimated number of common factors from the first regression residuals is asymptotically smaller than that of the second regression residuals. In the third chapter, Identification of Outliers for Testing Weak ϳ-Convergence, the authors suggest three novel procedures for separating the divergent series from a convergent club. Weak ϳ8́2convergence test is designed to detect whether cross-sectional variances of a panel data of interest show consistent diminution over time. When the panel data of interest includes divergent series, the cross-sectional variances become contaminated, which results in a seemingly divergent behavior. This chapter deals with this problem. We propose three novel detection procedures for identifying divergence series and provide the asymptotic justification. Utilizing Monte Carlo simulations, the finite sample properties are examined. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the newly proposed methods by using infant mortality rates in 42 countries. Even though all infant mortality rates have shown a downward trending behavior over time, the cross-sectional variance of log infant mortality rates is diverging over time. By using the proposed sieving methods, we identify six outliers. After excluding these outliers, the rest of the infant mortality rates are weakly ϳ-converging over time. Altogether, this dissertation provides methods for a better understanding of the source and nature of the cross-sectional dependence in panel data models.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1: More Efficient Estimation of Multiplicative Panel Data Models in the Presence of Serial Correlation (with Jeffrey Wooldridge)We provide a systematic approach in obtaining an estimator asymptotically more efficient than the popular fixed effects Poisson (FEP) estimator for panel data models with multiplicative heterogeneity in the conditional mean. In particular, we derive the optimal instrumental variables under appealing `working' second moment assumptions that allow underdispersion, overdispersion, and general patterns of serial correlation. Because parameters in the optimal instruments must be estimated, we argue for combining our new moment conditions with those that define the FEP estimator to obtain a generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator no less efficient than the FEP estimator and the estimator using the new instruments. A simulation study shows that the GMM estimator behaves well in terms of bias, and it often delivers nontrivial efficiency gains -- even when the working second-moment assumptions fail.Chapter 2: Information equivalence among transformations of semiparametric nonlinear panel data modelsI consider transformations of nonlinear semiparametric mean functions which yield moment conditions for estimation. Such transformations are said to be information equivalent if they yield the same asymptotic efficiency bound. I first derive a unified theory of algebraic equivalence for moment conditions created by a given linear transformation. The main equivalence result states that under standard regularity conditions, transformations which create conditional moment restrictions in a given empirical setting need only to have an equal rank to reach the same efficiency bound. Example applications are considered, including nonlinear models with multiplicative heterogeneity and linear models with arbitrary unobserved factor structures.Chapter 3: Moment-based Estimation of Linear Panel Data Models with Factor-augmented ErrorsI consider linear panel data models with unobserved factor structures when the number of time periods is small relative to the number of cross-sectional units. I examine two popular methods of estimation: the first eliminates the factors with a parameterized quasi-long-differencing (QLD) transformation. The other, referred to as common correlated effects (CCE), uses the cross-sectional averages of the independent and response variables to project out the space spanned by the factors. I show that the classical CCE assumptions imply unused moment conditions which can be exploited by the QLD transformation to derive new linear estimators which weaken identifying assumptions and have desirable theoretical properties. I prove asymptotic normality of the linear QLD estimators under a heterogeneous slope model which allows for a tradeoff between identifying conditions. These estimators do not require the number of cross-sectional variables to be less than T-1, a strong restriction in fixed-$T$ CCE analysis. Finally, I investigate the effects of per-student expenditure on standardized test performance using data from the state of Michigan.

Book Three Essays on Count Data Estimation Methods with Applications to Health Economics

Download or read book Three Essays on Count Data Estimation Methods with Applications to Health Economics written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to propose and estimate count data microeconometric models that take into account special features of health care data. Three problems in health economics are investigated. The first essay analyzes the effect of managed care insurance plans on the demand for outpatient physician visits. It provides a Bayesian method to empirically separate selection effects due to individual choice of coverage and incentive effects known as moral hazard. The proposed Endogenous Hurdle Poisson log-Normal model addresses two important econometric issues: the large proportion of zero outpatient visits and the endogeneity of managed care insurance status to utilization of outpatient services. The data are obtained from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, (MEPS), and the sample consists of privately insured individuals, aged 21-64, all of whom are employed but not self-employed. The analysis indicates both favorable selection bias and important moral hazard effects in the decision whether to utilize an outpatient visit or not. The second essay investigates the impact of health insurance coverage on utilization of doctor visits. A Bayesian panel count data model with correlated random effects and endogenous treatment of the insurance variable is applied to a subset of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a national longitudinal survey of individuals over 50 years old and their spouses. The age limit for Medicare eligibility at age 65 serves as an exclusion restriction. After controlling for selection effects insured individuals present higher utilization of doctor visits. The third essay analyzes the demand for cigarettes using data from the 1994-1996 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII). Since individuals tend to round their consumption of cigarettes in packs smoked per day the dependent variable - number of cigarettes - exhibits pile-ups of counts. The mixed binary-ordered probit approach accommodates this feature of the data and models the starting smoking, the quitting smoking and the how much to smoke decisions. The analysis is performed separately for men and women and provides strong evidence of gender differences in cigarette consumption.

Book Three Essays on Teacher Labor Markets in Thailand

Download or read book Three Essays on Teacher Labor Markets in Thailand written by Pumsaran Tongliemnak and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2010 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first essay of this dissertation examines the role of teacher characteristics in schools on student outcomes using datasets from TIMSS 1999 and TIMSS 2007 international tests. Taking an advantage that students have to take both mathematics and science subjects from different teachers, I use the method of First Difference (FD) analysis in order to remove the potential biases between teacher attributes and unobserved student characteristics. The findings show some contradictory outcomes between the FD analysis and ordinary least squares (OLS) analysis. The second essay looks into the problem of recruitment of well-qualified high school and college graduates to work as primary and secondary school teachers. I compare teacher salaries and benefits vis-à-vis other mathematics and science-oriented professions namely medical professions, engineers, accountants, scientists and nurses. In addition, I compare incomes between people who graduate from teacher colleges and non-teacher colleges. Using data from Thailand Labor Force Survey from 1985 to 2005, I find that teachers are the most poorly paid of all professions, including nurses. The difference in terms of an opportunity cost between male and female teachers is also striking. Among the graduates from teacher colleges, male graduates earn more than their peers if they chose other occupations whereas female graduates earn less if they make other choices. The third essay looks at the reasons teachers choose part-time jobs, the type of jobs they choose, and the amount of income they receive from these jobs, as well as factors influencing these decisions. I find that approximately 20-25% of Thai teachers participated in moonlighting activities. The majority of them have part-time jobs including tutoring, selling food and other products, and farming. Low salaries and high level of indebtedness are the most important factors associated with the increased likelihood of having a part-time job. However, economic status does not correlate significantly with their decision to tutor as their part-time job.

Book Three Essays on the Estimation of Average Treatment Effects in Quasi Experimental Panel Data

Download or read book Three Essays on the Estimation of Average Treatment Effects in Quasi Experimental Panel Data written by Kathleen T. Li and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying average treatment effects (ATE) from quasi-experimental panel data has become one of the most important yet challenging endeavors for social scientists. The difficulty lies in accurately estimating the counterfactual outcomes for the potentially treated units in the absence of treatment. Perhaps the most popular method to estimate average treatment effects is the Difference-in-Differences (DID) method. The key assumption of the DID method is that outcomes of the treated units would have followed a path parallel to the control units in the absence of treatment and violation of this ``parallel lines" assumption will result in biased estimates. This dissertation consists of three essays, which either build on existing methods (essay 1 and 3) or propose a new method (essay 2) that can be used even when the ``parallel lines" assumption of DID does not hold. In essay 1, we derive the asymptotic distribution of the HCW method, which is computationally simple as it only involves least squares regressions. However, in cases where treatment and control units are positively correlated, the HCW method may have less predictive efficiency than other methods such as the synthetic control and modified synthetic control method, which impose the restriction that weights are non-negative. The popular synthetic control method additionally imposes the restriction that the weights sum to one, which can be a helpful regularization condition when there are many control units. In essay 3, we provide the inference theory for both the synthetic control and modified synthetic control method through projection theory and propose a computational algorithm using subsampling to compute the confidence intervals. In order to apply the HCW method, synthetic control method and modified synthetic control method, the number of control units needs to be smaller than the pre-treatment sample size. In essay 2, we propose the augmented DID method, which can be used where there are many treatment and control units, but is less flexible than the three aforementioned methods. In short, this dissertation provides several methods and their inference procedures to identify average treatment effects. Which method should be used when depends on the structure of the data.
