The first two chapters study the impact of microfinance programs using a new, large and unique cross-section dataset from Bangladesh. Chapter 1 evaluates the impact of microfinance programs on household consumption. The program eligibility requirement and the richness of the data allowed the use of a number of non-experimental impact evaluation techniques, in particular Instrumental Variable (IV) estimation and Propensity Score Matching (PSM). Estimates from both IV and PSM strategies have been interpreted as average causal effects that are valid for various groups of participants in microfinance. The overall results indicate that the effects of micro loans on consumption are not robust across all groups of poor household borrowers. It appears that the poorest of the poor participants are among those who benefit most. The benefits are lower, or sometimes even negative, for households that are marginal to the participation decision. The effects of participation are, in general, stronger for male borrowers. Chapter 2 uses a similar methodology to examine the impact of these microfinance programs on child welfare, specifically on school attendance and child labour in rural Bangladesh. The empirical results indicate that household participation in a microcredit program may increase child labour and reduce school enrolment. The effects are more pronounced for girls than boys, and they appear to vary inversely with age, with younger children tending to be strongly affected. The estimated effects also vary by income, education and asset holding of households such that the children of poorer and less educated households are affected most adversely. Finally Chapter 3, employing similar econometric techniques for estimating causal effects, investigates the impact of the changing skill composition of immigrant flows on the structure of Australian wages. Immigrants may self-select to join labour markets in the better performing industrial countries. We address the resulting endogeneity problem using different IV techniques. While existing studies typically use cross-section data, we use macro data to allow for the adjustment of wages and aggregate demand to immigration flows. Our estimation strategies generate results that are consistent with the dominant findings from existing empirical work. We find no robust evidence that a relative increase in skilled immigrants exerts any discernible adverse consequences on the wage structure in Australia.

Book excerpt: The second essay tests empirically the latest theories in which child labor does not have a linear relation with household income. Using data from Peru and adopting a multivariate nonparametric approach, with continuous and discrete covariates and cross-validation methods for optimal bandwidths, the results reveal interesting patterns not detected in the child labor literature. The estimated elasticities are larger than those from previous studies and suggest that changes in income have a heterogeneous effect on employment and school participation with higher effects for low-income households.

Book excerpt: The first essay of this dissertation uses accounting methods to decompose aggregate labour productivity and employment growth into their sectoral components as well as into within-sector and employment reallocation effects for a sample of 81 developed and developing countries using data going back to the mid-1980s. Key findings are that aggregate labour productivity growth for developing countries taken together is driven by as much services as by industry, in spite of strong differences between countries, and that within-sector effects on aggregate labour productivity growth are more important than employment reallocation effects, a pattern that holds for all regions.

The first two papers use the same theoretical model to explain different issues in developing countries. The third paper studies the effects of population growth on the Environmental Kuznets Curve provided it exists. China's internal migration plays an important role in explaining its recent economic success. The first paper constructs a model of labor migration, focusing on the role of selection effects in determining labor market outcomes, and then calibrates it to quantify the effects of China's labor market reforms on its outputs and inequality. I show that the removal of internal migration restrictions benefits the economy as a whole, while exacerbating inequality within both rural and urban areas. The second paper suggests that minimum wage policy may be beneficial for a transitional economy in which labor is migrating from rural areas to urban areas when positive moving costs occur. With a moving cost wedge a modestly binding minimum wage can cause relatively low productivity urban workers to be replaced by higher productivity rural migrants, and therefore increase aggregate output. To achieve the second best outcome, government shall fully compensate the moving costs for the marginal migrant workers who move from the rural industrial sector to the urban subsistence sector and a binding minimum wage shall be imposed on the urban workers but not the migrant workers in the urban industrial sector. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis postulates an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and many local environmental health indicators. By using an overlapping generations (OLG) model, I focus on technological effects, where the properties of the existing pollution abatement technologies could generate the inverted U-shaped EKC and other forms of growth-pollution paths for the less advanced economies. Moreover, I examine the effects of population growth on the shape of the EKC, provided that it exists. Simulations indicate positive population growth raises the height of the EKC at every level of output per worker; thus, putting an extra burden on environment quality. Empirical evidence from China partially supports the results.
