Book Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Download or read book Close Encounters of the Third Kind written by Jon Towlson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (CE3K) is not so much a movie as a religious experience. On its release in 1977, CE3K virtually redefined the science fiction film, shifting it away from spaceships, laser guns, and bug-eyed monsters into a modified form of science fiction that John Wyndham once called ‘logical fantasy’. What would it be like if extra-terrestrials made contact with people on Earth? How would it feel? Like 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Steven Spielberg’s primary inspiration, CE3K is concerned with mankind’s evolution towards the stars, towards a state of transcendence. But Spielberg’s vision hinges not so much on cool scientific intellect being the key to our next stage of evolution, as on the necessary development of emotional intelligence. To that end, we must regain our childlike curiosity for what lies beyond the skies, we must recover our capacity to experience wonder. Intensity of emotion is inherent to the film’s meaning, and the aim of this book is to explore this in detail. Along the way it delves into the film’s production history, explores Spielberg’s remarkable cinematic realisation of the film (including a comparison study of the three different release versions), and considers in detail how CE3K fits into the Spielberg oeuvre.

For a moment of clarity in His presence? Do you wonder why the stories of divine encounters you read in the Bible don't happen in today’s world? In the age of information and man-made wonders, we’ve replaced a vibrant relationship with God with a stale religion about God. We’ve disconnected from His Presence—and our lives show it. Revealing not only how believers are called to divine encounters but also how we are created for them, bestselling authors and internationally respected pastors Paul Manwaring and Bill Johnson of Bethel Church point the way back to experiencing God, showing how true encounter is at the heart of the Christian faith—and how you can live a lifestyle marked, and supernaturally shaped, by God’s presence. Through biblically-grounded teaching, Spirit-inspired wisdom, and uplifting encouragement, this modern-day classic helps you recapture the passion and power of the early church, empowering you to: Cultivate a vibrant relationship with the very real Person of God. Position yourself to experience true encounters with the Holy Spirit. Discern when these powerful moments are occurring. Discover the purpose each encounter plays in your life. Recognize encounters as signs of confirmation. Turn your Bible reading into personal experience. Fill your heart with divine delight in the Person of the Holy Spirit. Leave behind the stagnant religion of this age and run with reckless abandon back to the One who transforms you with His presence and then transforms the world through you.

In The Para-State,ÊAldo Civico draws on interviews with paramilitary death squads and drug lords to provide a cultural interpretation of the countryÕs history of violence and state control. Between 2003 and 2008, Civico gained unprecedented access to some of ColombiaÕs most notorious leaders of the death squads. He also conducted interviews with the victims of paramilitary, with drug kingpins, and with vocal public supporters of the paramilitary groups. Drawing on the work of Deleuze and Guattari, this riveting work demonstrates how the paramilitaries have in essence become a war machine deployed by the Colombian state to control and maintain its territory and political legitimacy.

Book China and Ashkenazic Jewry Transcultural Encounters

Download or read book China and Ashkenazic Jewry Transcultural Encounters written by Kathryn Hellerstein and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-04-04 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past thirty years, the Sino-Jewish encounter in modern China has increasingly garnered scholarly and popular attention. This volume will be the first to focus on the transcultural exchange between Ashkenazic Jewry and China. The essays here investigate how this exchange of texts and translations, images and ideas, has enriched both Jewish and Chinese cultures and prepared for a global, inclusive world literature. The book breaks new ground in the field, covering such new topics as the images of China in Yiddish and German Jewish letters, the intersectionality of the Jewish and Chinese literature in illuminating the implications for a truly global and inclusive world literature, the biographies of prominent figures in Chinese-Jewish connections, the Chabad engagement in contemporary China. Some of the fundamental debates in the current scholarship will also be addressed, with a special emphasis on how many Jewish refugees arrived in Shanghai and how much interaction occurred between the Jewish refugees and the resident Chinese population during the wartime and its aftermath.

Book Celestial Encounters

  • Author : Florin Diacu
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-12-08
  • ISBN : 0691221839
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Celestial Encounters written by Florin Diacu and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celestial Encounters is for anyone who has ever wondered about the foundations of chaos. In 1888, the 34-year-old Henri Poincaré submitted a paper that was to change the course of science, but not before it underwent significant changes itself. "The Three-Body Problem and the Equations of Dynamics" won a prize sponsored by King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway and the journal Acta Mathematica, but after accepting the prize, Poincaré found a serious mistake in his work. While correcting it, he discovered the phenomenon of chaos. Starting with the story of Poincaré's work, Florin Diacu and Philip Holmes trace the history of attempts to solve the problems of celestial mechanics first posed in Isaac Newton's Principia in 1686. In describing how mathematical rigor was brought to bear on one of our oldest fascinations--the motions of the heavens--they introduce the people whose ideas led to the flourishing field now called nonlinear dynamics. In presenting the modern theory of dynamical systems, the models underlying much of modern science are described pictorially, using the geometrical language invented by Poincaré. More generally, the authors reflect on mathematical creativity and the roles that chance encounters, politics, and circumstance play in it.
