Book excerpt: In the motion picture industry most actors and actresses work for low fees, but a small group can command compensations of millions of dollars per movie. In the first chapter I test the consumer learning hypothesis: consumers choose films using information from other films with the same star actor or actress. Using DVD sales data for a sample of 206 films, I show that the release of a new movie increases sales of old movies with the same star. However, this result is driven by a subset of sequels and Oscar nominated films. I conclude that some effect other than consumer learning must drive the presence of superstars in the motion picture industry. In chapter two I provide a novel explanation for the optimality of the sequential release by showing that sequential release can be the equilibrium of a signaling game. Theater owners must choose which films to screen and studios signal which films are of high quality by delaying the home video release of those films until after the theatrical run. Sequential release is an effective form of signaling because it is costly. The properties of the equilibrium of the DVD release timing game I describe suggest that a theatrical premiere with release in other markets no sooner than three months later will remain the norm for big budget movies. One important economic consequence of the Internet and information technology has been the reduction in the fixed costs of distribution and a consequent increase in product variety. In chapter three I investigate the effect on the welfare of producers of creative content. I identify a set of books sold on Amazon.com for which the author's revenue can be easily computed. I use this data to parameterize a model of author entry and then estimate the welfare gains of authors and consumers from Print-on-Demand (POD) technology.

In making strategic decisions regarding entry, quality and quantity to be supplied for their multiple products firms must consider the competition with rivals as well as cannibalization of their own products that are close substitutes. In this setting, understanding the relationship between the behavior of consumer demand and firms decisions' regarding product characteristics and strategic variables like advertising are fundamental issues in industrial organization. This dissertation empirically explores these fundamental issues in the pharmaceutical and airline industries. The first paper of my dissertation estimates consumer demand for different anti-cholesterol drugs using panel data on a nationally representative sample of individuals who were diagnosed with cholesterol problems in the period 1996-2002. The data provides detailed information on individuals' medical conditions, medical and drug insurance coverage, drug purchases (if any), and other demographic and medical information. Individuals choose whether to purchase an anti-cholesterol rug and, if so, which drug to buy. The model permits flexible substitution patterns among drug choices and persistence in those choices by incorporating both observed and unobserved consumer heterogeneity. The estimates suggest that lower income patients without prescription drug insurance are very price sensitive: they are less likely to use drugs and, if they do use them, they tend to purchase the less expensive drugs. I find that roughly 500 thousand individuals without drug insurance who are currently not purchasing anti-cholesterol drugs would do so in the counterfactual world in which they are given the standard co-payment plan. The second paper also looks at consumer demands for anti-cholesterol drugs. While the first paper focused on the differentiated products, this paper explores the market expansion effects of direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA). The study combines the individual data used in the first paper with monthly expenditure data on DTCA for the period 1996-2002. The dynamic demand model estimated in this paper explores the heterogeneous effects of DTCA. Overall, I find a positive effect from DTCA with short term elasticity of 0.107. Through persistence in consumer demand this effect lasts over multiple time periods. I find that individuals not taking a cholesterol drug respond more to advertising than those on the drug. In addition, I find that less educated individuals, those that may be unaware of their health condition, and those without health insurance are most responsive to DTCA. Finally, the third paper studies the effect of product ownership and quality on entry in the airline industry. Specifically, this paper empirically examines the decision of an airline to offer high quality nonstop service between cities given that the airline may or may not be offering lower quality one-stop service. I find that airlines that offer one-stop service through a hub are less likely to enter that same market with nonstop service than those that do not. In addition, the quality of the one-stop service is another determinant of entry. Airlines are more likely to enter a market with nonstop service if their own or their rival's one-stop service in the market are of lower quality.

Book excerpt: My thesis applies recent empirical industrial organization tools to study policy and managerial questions arising in three important market settings: healthcare, digital platforms, and urban housing/transportation. The first chapter of the paper studies a vertical contract, ''resale price maintenance'' (RPM). RPM is controversial from an antitrust perspective because it can eliminate double markups but facilitate price coordination across retailers. I offer direct empirical evidence on these effects of RPM by combining an anti-trust case about RPM with a novel retailer-level dataset. I find that RPM is primarily used to reduce double markups while also facilitating price coordination in the retail sector. Motivated by these findings, I build and estimate a structural model and illustrate how the key model primitives (consumer substitution patterns and manufacturer bargaining power) determine the welfare to offer insights for regulators. The second chapter studies a prevalent dilemma on digital platforms: whether a platform should capitalize on popular content to satisfy viewers in the short run or support nascent content creators for better performance in the long run. I examine an internal experiment in a short-form video platform to quantify the effects of a support program on novice content creators. I find that the program leads to a worse viewer experience in the short run but leads to more content posting and higher content quality. The combined results suggest that improving content quality could counterbalance the adverse effects on viewer experience within three months. The last chapter builds an equilibrium sorting model of housing location and commuting mode choice with endogenous traffic congestion to evaluate the efficiency and equity impacts of a menu of urban transportation policies. Leveraging fine-scale data from household travel diaries and housing transaction data identifying residents' home and work locations in Beijing, we recover structural estimates with rich preference heterogeneity over both travel mode and residential location decisions. Overall, our results advocate for a congestion pricing policy coupled with subway construction.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to advance our knowledge of long-run economic changes. It consists of three essays on strategic industry dynamics in retail services, agricultural commodities, and high-tech manufacturing, respectively. Although creative destruction is commonly understood as the replacement of old technologies by new ones, its true significance lies not in the transition of technologies per se but in either the reluctance or inability of old winners to innovate when faced with new challengers. Hence I emphasize the incumbent-entrant rivalry as the common theme across these essays. Essay 1 assesses the impact of the entry of large supermarkets on incumbents of various sizes. Contrary to the conventional notion that big stores drive small rivals out of the market, data from Tokyo in the 1990s show that large supermarkets' entry induces the exit of existing large and medium-size competitors, but improves the survival rate of small supermarkets. These findings highlight the role of store size as an important dimension of product differentiation and caution against size-based entry regulations. Essay 2 studies the impact of international market structure on commodity prices, using a standard oligopoly model and exploiting historical variations in the structure of the international coffee bean market. The results suggest that, of the 75% drop in the real coffee price between 1988 and 2001, the end of a cartel treaty explains 49 points and the emergence of Vietnam as a major exporter explains another 9 points. I then discuss policy implications for competition, trade, and aid. Essay 3 investigates why incumbent firms innovate more slowly than entrants. Theories predict cannibalization between existing and new products delays incumbents' innovation, whereas preemptive motives accelerate it, and incumbents' cost (dis)advantage would further reinforce these tendencies. To empirically quantify these three forces, I develop and estimate a dynamic oligopoly model using a unique panel dataset of hard disk drive (HDD) manufacturers (1981-98). The results suggest that despite strong preemptive motives and a substantial cost advantage over entrants, incumbents are reluctant to innovate because of cannibalization, which can explain at least 51% of the incumbent-entrant timing gap. I then discuss managerial and public-policy implications.
