Book Development of CAD CAM System for Cold Working Closed Die Forging Process

Download or read book Development of CAD CAM System for Cold Working Closed Die Forging Process written by Mohamed A. Abdulmawlla and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of computer-aided engineering (CAE), design (CAD), and manufacturing (CAM), is essential in modern metal forming technology. Thus, process of modelling for the investigation and understanding of deformation mechanics has become a major concern in recent and advanced research, and the finite .element method (FEM.) has assumed increased importance, particularly in the modelling of deformation processes. This work is devoted to the development of CAD/CAM system for closed die forging process. The system development consists of three stages: namely, metal flow simulation, die failure analysis and design optimisation, and development and implementation of machining code. In the first stage, the finite element method was used to simulate the axisymmetric closed die forging process of copper material. The method was used to study the metal flow, die filling retaining the non-linearity involved in the large change in the geometry, the continuous change in the contact surface condition and the isotropic material work-hardening characteristics. In the second stage, a finite element analysis and optirnisation algorithm was developed to examine the die fatigue -life and to optimise the die design. The finite element analysis in the first and second stage was carried out using commercially available finite element software called LUSAS. In the third stage, a machining code for the optimised die was developed and implemented using CAD/CAM software called UniGraphics and CNC machine. A qualitative comparison between the computational results and experiments ware made. It had been found that the early stage of the metal flow in closed die forging was very similar to a simple upsetting, then the material flows into the die cavity and towards the flash land leading to a very sharp increase in forging load. The die was designed to sustain the forging load and withstand 1000 load cycles.

Book Nonlinear Modeling and Simulation of Radial Forging Process

Download or read book Nonlinear Modeling and Simulation of Radial Forging Process written by Jian Chen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Radial forging is an important manufacturing process to produce large cannon barrels. It is used to improve the material properties and reduce the porosity of the billet. The objective of this study is to develop finite element models to investigate the behavior of the workpiece and predict the elimination of void defects in the radial forging process. A nonlinear coupled finite element model has been developed to study the behavior of a large-diameter tube subjected to mechanical and thermal loadings in hot radial forging. The model is formulated in a three-dimensional frame, accounting for both axial and circumferential effects. A rate-dependent material model is used to describe the viscoplastic behavior of a workpiece subject to high temperature and large strain. The simulation results are compared with previously published experimental and two dimensional axi-symmetric simulation results. This work also develops a comprehensive three-dimensional model to predict the degree to which void defects are eliminated in the cold rolling process. It compares experimental results to the finite element predictions to validate the model. The void reduction predictions of the finite element analysis agree closely with the experimental findings. Neural network has been used to establish the relationship between the process parameters and the void reduction. Finally the previous model has been extended to examine the mechanism of void deformation subjected to large deformation in hot radial forging. It investigates systematically the effects of void location, mandrel, die shape, and reduction in tube thickness on the final void reduction. The model is verified by comparison with experimental findings. All the simulation results provide a valuable procedure for the design of the hot radial forging process"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Book The Prediction of Metal Flow and Properties in Three dimensional Forgings Using the Finite Element Period

Download or read book The Prediction of Metal Flow and Properties in Three dimensional Forgings Using the Finite Element Period written by Ian Pillinger and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A knowledge of the flow occuring in metal-forming processes is of great industrial importance, and the finite-element technique is the only form of deformation analysis which can predict the flow of the material. The examination of forging operations requires a full elasticplastic treatment to be used. This thesis is concerned with an elastic-plastic, finite-element program which has been developed to investigate three-dimensional examples of this process. The fundamental theory of the finite-element method is first introduced, and then the finite-element program is described in detail. The deformation, and distributions of hardness and die-interface pressure, predicted by this technique for the unlubricated upsetting of a rectangular block are compared with experimental results, and found to be in broad agreement, the differences being attributed to the incorrect imposition of very high friction by the friction-layer technique used in the analysis. With a corrected form of the friction technique, the finiteelement program predicts results for the axisymmetric friction-ring test and a new three-dimensional friction test which are in good agreement with experimental findings up to deformations of approximately 30%; the friction-layer technique used successfully in previous axisymmetric treatments appears to be unsuitable for threedimensional formulations when large deformations are considered. The finite-element program developed here is shown to be capable of modelling an example of a more complicated three-dimensional forging, that of an automobile connnecting rod. The experimental measurements of cteformation and hardness for an aluminium con rod forged using graphite lubrication are found to be in good agreement with the finite-element predictions obtained assuming sticking friction conditions but not with the results of a zero-friction idealisation. Finally, suggestions are made for the future development of this technique.

Book Application of the Finite Element Method to Metal Forming Problems

Download or read book Application of the Finite Element Method to Metal Forming Problems written by Shiro Kobayashi and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applicability of the finite element method in metal-forming process modeling has been expanded and the use of its capability for solving industrial problems has been demonstrated in the area of; (1) spread analysis in three-dimensional forming processes, (2) perform design and (3) calculation of residual stresses involved in metal forming. In the analysis of spread, sideway spread in block compression between two parallel flat plates was analyzed, using simplified three dimensional eight-node elements. The investigation has been extended to the development of general three-dimensional finite element technique and, the analysis of open-die forging was conducted for producing two size bars. A novel approach to preform design by tracing a loading path backward from a given final configuration was applied to precision preform design in plane-strain rolling. The technique was extended to include the temperature calculation in the scheme and applied to precision preform design in nosing at elevated temperatures. For the investigation of residual stresses, a comprehensive review on the subject has been made, and the finite element program was developed for the determination of residual stresses for radial forging. Keywords: Plastic deformation, Radial forging, Open-die forging, Preform design, Shell nosing.

This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are some books that target the theory of the finite element, while others focus on the programming side of things. Introduction to Finite Element Analysis Using MATLAB® and Abaqus accomplishes both. This book teaches the first principles of the finite element method. It presents the theory of the finite element method while maintaining a balance between its mathematical formulation, programming implementation, and application using commercial software. The computer implementation is carried out using MATLAB, while the practical applications are carried out in both MATLAB and Abaqus. MATLAB is a high-level language specially designed for dealing with matrices, making it particularly suited for programming the finite element method, while Abaqus is a suite of commercial finite element software. Includes more than 100 tables, photographs, and figures Provides MATLAB codes to generate contour plots for sample results Introduction to Finite Element Analysis Using MATLAB and Abaqus introduces and explains theory in each chapter, and provides corresponding examples. It offers introductory notes and provides matrix structural analysis for trusses, beams, and frames. The book examines the theories of stress and strain and the relationships between them. The author then covers weighted residual methods and finite element approximation and numerical integration. He presents the finite element formulation for plane stress/strain problems, introduces axisymmetric problems, and highlights the theory of plates. The text supplies step-by-step procedures for solving problems with Abaqus interactive and keyword editions. The described procedures are implemented as MATLAB codes and Abaqus files can be found on the CRC Press website.

Download or read book Micro Macro Interactions written by Albrecht Bertram and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many materials or media in nature and technology possess a microstructure which determines their macroscopic behaviour. The knowledge of the relevant mechanisms is often more comprehensive on the micro than on the macro scale. On the other hand, not all information on the micro level is relevant for the understanding of this macro behaviour. Therefore, averaging and homogenization methods are needed to select only the specific information from the micro scale, which influences the macro scale. These methods also open the possibility to design or to influence microstructures with the objective to optimize their macro behaviour. This book presents the development of new methods in this interdisciplinary field of macro- micro-interactions of different engineering branches like mechanical and process engineering, applied mathematics, theoretical, and computational physics. In particular, solids with microstructures and particle systems are considered.
