Book Three Dimensional Modeling of Laser Plasma Interaction

Download or read book Three Dimensional Modeling of Laser Plasma Interaction written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have developed a new target platform to study Laser Plasma Interaction in ignition-relevant condition at the Omega laser facility (LLE/Rochester)[1]. By shooting an interaction beam along the axis of a gas-filled hohlraum heated by up to 17 kJ of heater beam energy, we were able to create a millimeter-scale underdense uniform plasma at electron temperatures above 3 keV. Extensive Thomson scattering measurements allowed us to benchmark our hydrodynamic simulations performed with HYDRA[2]. As a result of this effort, we can use with much confidence these simulations as input parameters for our LPI simulation code pF3d[3]. In this paper, we show that by using accurate hydrodynamic profiles and full three-dimensional simulations including a realistic modeling of the laser intensity pattern generated by various smoothing options, whole beam three-dimensional linear kinetic modeling of stimulated Brillouin scattering reproduces quantitatively the experimental measurements(SBS thresholds, reflectivity values and the absence of measurable SRS). This good agreement was made possible by the recent increase in computing power routinely available for such simulations. These simulations accurately predicted the strong reduction of SBS measured when polarization smoothing is used.

Book Progress in Long Scale Length Laser Plasma Interactions

Download or read book Progress in Long Scale Length Laser Plasma Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have employed the first four beams to measure propagation and laser backscattering losses in large ignition-size plasmas. Gas-filled targets between 2 mm and 7 mm length have been heated from one side by overlapping the focal spots of the four beams from one quad operated at 351 nm (3[omega]) with a total intensity of 2 x 10[sup 15] W cm[sup -2]. The targets were filled with 1 atm of CO[sub 2] producing of up to 7 mm long homogeneously heated plasmas with densities of n[sub e]= 6 x 10[sup 20] cm[sup -3] and temperatures of T[sub e]= 2 keV. The high energy in a NIF quad of beams of 16kJ, illuminating the target from one direction, creates unique conditions for the study of laser plasma interactions at scale lengths not previously accessible. The propagation through the large-scale plasma was measured with a gated x-ray imager that was filtered for 3.5 keV x rays. These data indicate that the beams interact with the full length of this ignition-scale plasma during the last[approx]1 ns of the experiment. During that time, the full aperture measurements of the stimulated Brillouin scattering and stimulated Raman scattering show scattering into the four focusing lenses of 6% for the smallest length ([approx]2 mm). increasing to 12% for[approx]7 mm. These results demonstrate the NIF experimental capabilities and further provide a benchmark for three-dimensional modeling of the laser-plasma interactions at ignition-size scale lengths.

Book Introduction to Laser Plasma Interactions

Download or read book Introduction to Laser Plasma Interactions written by Pierre Michel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics of laser-plasma interactions (LPI), based on a graduate course taught by the author. The emphasis is on high-energy-density physics (HEDP) and inertial confinement fusion (ICF), with a comprehensive description of the propagation, absorption, nonlinear effects and parametric instabilities of high energy lasers in plasmas. The recent demonstration of a burning plasma on the verge of nuclear fusion ignition at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California, has marked the beginning of a new era of ICF and fusion research. These new developments make LPI more relevant than ever, and the resulting influx of new scientists necessitates new pedagogical material on the subject. In contrast to the classical textbooks on LPI, this book provides a complete description of all wave-coupling instabilities in unmagnetized plasmas in the kinetic as well as fluid pictures, and includes a comprehensive description of the optical smoothing techniques used on high-power lasers and their impact on laser-plasma instabilities. It summarizes all the key developments from the 1970s to the present day in view of the current state of LPI and ICF research; it provides a derivation of the key LPI metrics and formulas from first principles, and connects the theory to experimental observables. With exercises and plenty of illustrations, this book is ideal as a textbook for a course on laser-plasma interactions or as a supplementary text for graduate introductory plasma physics course. Students and researchers will also find it to be an invaluable reference and self-study resource.

Book Three Dimensional Filamentation of Light in Laser Plasmas

Download or read book Three Dimensional Filamentation of Light in Laser Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first calculations of time-dependent laser-plasma filamentation in three dimensions are reported. These calculations are done with a three-dimensional laser propagation code based on a previous two-dimensional code. The effect of incident beam structure, and in particular optical smoothing techniques, on the behavior of filamentation is studied. Both ponderomotive and thermal conduction dominated nonlinearities are considered, and calculations are done simulating both homogeneous non-absorbing plasmas and inhomogeneous laboratory plasmas. Random phase screen (RPS) and induced spatial incoherence (ISI) optical smoothing techniques are investigated and compared to generic unsmoothed laser beams. Qualitative examples are presented and scaling studies are done and compared to a simple theoretical analysis, In typical laser-plasma interactions without optical smoothing, three-dimensional effects lead to greatly increased filament intensities, as expected. Peak filament intensities of order 100-500 times the average intensity are routinely observed (without optical smoothing), as compared to earlier two dimensional calculations where peak intensities were of order 10-50 times average. In spite of this tendency to create stronger filaments, three-dimensional filamentation (when measured on a time-averaged basis) can be suppressed by using ISI smoothing. Under the same conditions, instantaneous ISI intensities can show considerable enhancement, although much less than the unsmoothed beams. RPS smoothing exhibits less filamentation suppression. Under laser-fusion reactor conditions, calculations indicate that ISI suppression can completely eliminate filamentation.

Book Numerical Simulation of Interaction of Short Pulse Lasers with Plasma

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Interaction of Short Pulse Lasers with Plasma written by Amol Holkundkar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of high power lasers opened a new era of scientific innovations. Now it is possible to study the matter properties under extreme conditions applicable to large number of potential applications. The field of laser-plasma interaction is very vast and wealthy in content. In this thesis we present three basic aspects related to the subject. We have developed a new model for laser interaction with solid targets which is applicable for the laser pulse duration ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds. The benchmarking of the model is done by testing various special cases. The absorption model is coupled with one dimension radiation hydrodynamics, opacity and equation of state data in order to simulate various experiments. The interaction of laser with atomic cluster is also investigated in this monograph. A new hydrodynamic model for laser cluster interaction is presented. Our model takes into account the radial non-uniformity of the expanding cluster under the influence of incident laser. Finally the laser induced ion acceleration is also studied using one dimensional particle-in-cell code.

Book Continuation of Full scale Three dimensional Numerical Experiments on High intensity Particle and Laser Beam matter Interactions

Download or read book Continuation of Full scale Three dimensional Numerical Experiments on High intensity Particle and Laser Beam matter Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results from the grant entitled, Continuation of full-scale three-dimensional numerical experiments on high-intensity particle and laser beam-matter interactions. The research significantly advanced the understanding of basic high-energy density science (HEDS) on ultra intense laser and particle beam plasma interactions. This advancement in understanding was then used to to aid in the quest to make 1 GeV to 500 GeV plasma based accelerator stages. The work blended basic research with three-dimensions fully nonlinear and fully kinetic simulations including full-scale modeling of ongoing or planned experiments. The primary tool was three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The simulations provided a test bed for theoretical ideas and models as well as a method to guide experiments. The research also included careful benchmarking of codes against experiment. High-fidelity full-scale modeling provided a means to extrapolate parameters into regimes that were not accessible to current or near term experiments, thereby allowing concepts to be tested with confidence before tens to hundreds of millions of dollars were spent building facilities. The research allowed the development of a hierarchy of PIC codes and diagnostics that is one of the most advanced in the world.
