Book On the Three Dimensional Implications of LEFM

Download or read book On the Three Dimensional Implications of LEFM written by JS. Solecki and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A linear elastic plate containing a central through-thickness crack is investigated using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The crack front profile is initially assumed to be straight, and the distributions of the energy release rate are calculated over a range of Poisson's ratios. Using the results from the straight crack problem, curved crack profiles are generated that are attuned to a uniform distribution of the energy release rate. Also, some attention is directed to the computation of the singular behavior in the vicinity of the vertex (i.e., where the crack front meets the free surface).

Book Mathematical and Computational Analyses of Cracking Formation

Download or read book Mathematical and Computational Analyses of Cracking Formation written by Yoichi Sumi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the pattern formation and the evolution of crack propagation in engineering materials and structures, bridging mathematical analyses of cracks based on singular integral equations, to computational simulation of engineering design. The first two parts of this book focus on elasticity and fracture and provide the basis for discussions on fracture morphology and its numerical simulation, which may lead to a simulation-based fracture control in engineering structures. Several design concepts are discussed for the prevention of fatigue and fracture in engineering structures, including safe-life design, fail-safe design, damage tolerant design. After starting with basic elasticity and fracture theories in parts one and two, this book focuses on the fracture morphology that develops due to the propagation of brittle cracks or fatigue cracks. In part three, the mathematical analysis of a curved crack is precisely described, based on the perturbation method. The stability theory of interactive cracks propagating in brittle solids may help readers to understand the formation of a fractal-like cracking patterns in brittle solids, while the stability theory of crack paths helps to identify the straight versus sharply curved or sometimes wavy crack paths observed in brittle solids. In part four, the numerical simulation method of a system of multiple cracks is introduced by means of the finite element method, which may be used for the better implementation of fracture control in engineering structures. This book is part of a series on “Mathematics for Industry” and will appeal to structural engineers seeking to understand the basic backgrounds of analyses, but also to mathematicians with an interest in how such mathematical solutions are evaluated in industrial applications.

Book Hybrid Crack Elements for Three Dimensional Solids and Plate Bending

Download or read book Hybrid Crack Elements for Three Dimensional Solids and Plate Bending written by Kazumasa Moriya and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special crack front elements have been developed and have been assembled into superelements for direct evaluation of stress intensity factors K(I), K(II), and K(III) of arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional cracks. The formulation is based on the assumed stress hybrid finite element model. The assumption of stresses and boundary displacements contains asymptotically exact terms. The stress-free condition over the crack surface and the displacement compatibility across interelement boundaries are completely satisfied. The superelements are compatible with most existing finite element computer programs. Numerical results for commonly used fracture test specimens (single edge crack specimen, center crack specimen, double edge crack specimen and compact tension specimen), an embedded penny-shaped crack, a semi-circular surface flaw, and a quarter-circular corner flaw are presented. A superelement has been developed directly for the analysis of bending and shearing stress intensity factors, K(B) and K(S), of thin plates with a through-the-thickness crack subjected to out of plane bending. The particular approach is also based on the hybrid element concept, for which the assumed stresses satisfy both equilibrium and compatibility conditions. Poisson-Kirchhoff's thin plate theory and the complex variable technique are used.
