They are trying to know more about the faith. But one is irked to observe that a group of motivated people, mostly the so called secular intellectuals, have come forward to exploit the opportunity by presenting a distorted picture of Islam, with the sinister design to confuse the entire community of non-Muslims including the Hindus. They say that the true meaning of Islam is 'peace' and it is an extremely tolerant and peace-loving religion which has nothing to do with terrorism. They also say that no religion teaches killing innocent people and the terrorists are killing people by transgressing the teachings of Islam, or the terrorists have no religion and so on and so forth. Above all, they are telling lies and say that the Koran does not preach bloodshed or violence. It is therefore necessary to highlight the fundamental aspects of Islam to enlighten the World Community of non-Muslims about the aims and objectives of the faith that originated in Arabia.

This work gives English readers the ability to access the original Arabic of the Qur’an and hadith, and see the true face of Islam, without its face powder. It is hoped that this work will assist free thinkers to form their own opinion of Islam, based on the true Qur’an, without interference from Muslim propaganda or any agenda driven discourses.

It is addressed to his contemporary ulema, specially Miyan Nazir Husain Dehlawi and Maulawi Muhammad Husain of Batala who had issued a fatwa of heresy against the Promised Messiah(as) and declared him a non-Muslim, because he (the Promised Messiah) had claimed that Jesus Christ had died a natural death and the second coming of Masih ibni Maram (Jesus Christ) is fulfilled by the advent of Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as). Because (by the time the book was written) the ulema had refused to debate this issue with the Promised Messiah, he invited them, in this book, to a spiritual contest in which the question whether someone is a Muslim or not would be settled by Allah himself on the basis of four criteria of a true believer as laid down by Him in the Holy Quran. He also spelled out the modus operandi of this contest and fixed the period of time frame within which this contest would be decreed by Allah. He declared that God would not desert him and would help him and would grant him victory.

The power constellation today is not only multi-polar, but rather, ‘chaotic’: its configuration keeps shifting and it is determined not simply by new emerging super powers, but also by any seemingly small events in non-linear modes of interaction. The interdependency between communities somehow makes significant changes unpredictable. Such an interdependent, yet chaotic, world order, in turn, raises new philosophical questions. Identity, culture and civilization cannot be understood anymore simply in terms of traditional categories. These categories are called into question through mutual interrogation and mutual enlargement of horizons, and this inevitably entails hybridization and pluralization. The Asian voices included in this book speak of recognition of and respect for the ‘otherness’, the other outside as well as inside. The writers mostly see globalization as well as their own cultural positions through dialogical imagination in which a Western philosophical framework is deployed to find out their Asian positions, and the reverse, the Asian reality is used to problematize the Western framework. Thereby this book attempts to shed light on the question of how we are to understand culture and civilization.

Book excerpt: In 1105, six years after the first crusaders from Europe conquered Jerusalem, a Damascene Muslim jurisprudent named ’Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106) publicly dictated an extended call to the military jihad (holy war) against the European invaders. Entitled Kitab al-Jihad (The Book of the Jihad), al-Sulami’s work both summoned his Muslim brethren to the jihad and instructed them in the manner in which it ought to be conducted, covering topics as diverse as who should fight and be fought, treatment of prisoners and plunder, and the need for participants to fight their own inner sinfulness before turning their efforts against the enemy. Al-Sulami’s text is vital for a complete understanding of the Muslim reaction to the crusades, providing the reader with the first contemporary record of Muslim preaching against the crusaders. However, until recently only a small part of the text has been studied by modern scholars, as it has remained for the most part an unedited manuscript. In this book Niall Christie provides a complete edition and the first full English translation of the extant sections (parts 2, 8, 9 and 12) of the manuscript of al-Sulami’s work, making it fully available to modern readers for the first time. These are accompanied by an introductory study exploring the techniques that the author uses to motivate his audience, the precedents that influenced his work, and possible directions for future study of the text. In addition, an appendix provides translations of jihad sermons by Ibn Nubata al-Fariqi (d. 985), a preacher from Asia Minor whose rhetorical style was highly influential in the development of al-Sulami’s work.

Book excerpt: ‘Nagaland for Christ’ and ‘Jesus Saves’ are familiar slogans prominently displayed on public transport and celebratory banners in Nagaland, north-east India. They express an idealization of Christian homogeneity that belies the underlying tensions and negotiations between Christian and non-Christian Naga. This religious division is intertwined with that of healing beliefs and practices, both animistic and biomedical. This study focuses on the particular experiences of the Angami Naga, one of the many Naga peoples. Like other Naga, they are citizens of the state of India but extend ethnolinguistically into Tibeto-Burman south-east Asia. This ambiguity and how it affects their Christianity, global involvement, indigenous cultural assertiveness and nationalist struggle is explored. Not simply describing continuity through change, this study reveals the alternating Christian and non-Christian streams of discourse, one masking the other but at different times and in different guises.
