Book Asian Youth Travellers

Download or read book Asian Youth Travellers written by Catheryn Khoo-Lattimore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a bird’s-eye view of the current trends, opportunities, and challenges related to Asian youth travellers, and it also presents a holistic framework for future research to build upon. Managerial and policy implications are provided for the tourism and hospitality industry and government agencies to better accommodate the needs of Asian youth travellers – a unique and diverse market that is yet to be fully unveiled to the world. The book investigates the key characteristics that define contemporary Asian youth travellers, adopting a broad definition of Asia. While it includes relatively mature markets, it also features emerging markets in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The book looks at different forms of tourism undertaken by Asian travellers, encompassing educational tourism, adventure tourism, working holiday, self-driving tourism, dark tourism, volunteer tourism, and cultural tourism. A wide range of topics are discussed, from history to current trends, from motivations to constraints, from the influence of culture and religion on travel behaviour to the search of social freedom through travel, and from destination choice to destination avoidance. The findings and interpretations are drawn from diverse and novel research methods, such as netnography, visual anthropology, historiography, interview, focus group, survey, and document analysis.

Book excerpt: One Red Shirt is a collection of stories detailing Michael's travels and adventures in Asia. He grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota and always felt destined to do something daring and out of the ordinary. Somehow he felt he was different but couldn't put his finger on it. After completing his MBA, he decided to walk away from the start of a promising career as a business consultant and surprised co-workers and family by moving to Hong Kong, having never been out of North America, with no experience with Asian culture and no job. What started as a short term adventure turned into 10 years as he found himself in the midst of the pioneering Asian satellite television industry throughout the 1990s. Based in Hong Kong, he traveled extensively throughout Asia and beyond, encountering numerous cultures first hand and evolving both personally and professionally. One Red Shirt reveals his challenges with foreignness while maintaining a healthy dose of wonder and humor.

Book excerpt: In this vivid memoir that has sold millions of copies worldwide, Heinrich Harrer recounts his adventures as one of the first Europeans ever to enter Tibet. Harrer was traveling in India when the Second World War erupted. He was subsequently seized and imprisoned by British authorities. After several attempts, he escaped and crossed the rugged, frozen Himalayas, surviving by duping government officials and depending on the generosity of villagers for food and shelter.Harrer finally reached his ultimate destination-the Forbidden City of Lhasa-without money, or permission to be in Tibet. But Tibetan hospitality and his own curious appearance worked in Harrer's favor, allowing him unprecedented acceptance among the upper classes. His intelligence and European ways also intrigued the young Dalai Lama, and Harrer soon became His Holiness's tutor and trusted confidant. When the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1950, Harrer and the Dalai Lama fled the country together. This timeless story illuminates Eastern culture, as well as the childhood of His Holiness and the current plight of Tibetans. It is a must-read for lovers of travel, adventure, history, and culture. A motion picture, under the direction of Jean-Jacques Annaud, will feature Brad Pitt in the lead role of Heinrich Harrer.
