Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These eight comedies comprise the most extensive collection of Ludvig Holberg plays ever offered in the English language. The translators’ general introductions establish a cultural context for the comedies and break new ground in understanding the importance of Holberg’s comic aesthetic. Argetsinger’s extensive experience in theatre and Rossel’s preeminence as a Scandinavian Studies scholar assure that the translations are not only accurate but stage-worthy. The collection opens with The Political Tinker, the first Danish play to be produced in the new Danish Theatre, and ends with The Burial of Danish Comedy, literally the funeral service for the bankrupt theatre. Three more of Holberg’s renowned character comedies follow, Jean de France, Jeppe of the Hill, and Erasmus Montanus, along with his literary satire Ulysses von Ithacia. The final two plays demonstrate his ability to write shorter comic works, The Christmas Party, a scathing comedy of manners, and Pernille’s Brief Experience as a Lady, a situation comedy that satirizes the practice of baby-switching.

Book excerpt: Often designated “The Molière of the North” and “The Father of Scandinavian Theatre,” Ludvig Holberg through the continued popularity of his comedies has dominated the Danish National Theatre for more than two hundred years. Of Norwegian birth, Holberg is claimed by Norway as their own great comic genius. Both the Danish and the Norwegian National Theatres are fronted by statues of Holberg overlooking their entrances. This book presents the first introduction to and analysis of Holberg’s thirty-three comedies in English and is the first book in any language to explain why they continue to be the most popular comedies in Scandinavia. After introducing Holberg and discussing how and why he could write such lively works, Argetsinger divides the plays into six general types: comedies of character, comedies of intrigue, comedies of special public occasions, topical comedies, philosophical comedies, and satires of dramatic forms, and provides a fully developed example of each type. He then examines those details that make the scripts comic and stageworthy. The essential elements of Holberg’s comedy are those of all successful comedy writers: comic situations, business, character, and dialogue.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Comedies In the following translations Holberg's meaning is given to the best of the translator's ability, without tenacious adherence to phrases or punctilious attention to words. A translator, like other persons, may be over-righteous. Holberg was born in Bergen in 1684, eleven years after the death of Moliere, and seven years after the birth of George Farquhar, the youngest of the so-called "Comic Dramatists of the Restoration," and he died in Copenhagen in 1754. He was a man of comprehensive intellect, and wrote several valuable and laborious works in addition to his thirty-three comedies. The edition of his comedies referred to in this book is Holbergs Komedier, udgivne af Julius Martensen, in 13 vols., Ernst Bojesen, Copenhagen, 1897. In the preface which he wrote (in French) to Fursman's French translation of some of his plays Holberg, explains briefly his views on comedy (xii. 256).
