Book Three Classical Poets

Download or read book Three Classical Poets written by Richard Jenkyns and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 1982 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging essay Richard Jenkyns shows us how to read three quite different ancient poets. In a close and sensitive reading of Sappho, Catullus, and Juvenal, Jenkyns delineates the uniqueness of the poet's individual voice in relation to poetic traditions. His book constitutes a challenge to the view that one method will suffice for the interpretation of ancient poetry. He seeks to demonstrate that we can have no substitute for flexible and humane judgment, liberated from critical dogma, if we are to understand the great writers of the past. It is Jenkyns' appealing habit to clarify and illustrate his points by drawing analogies from modern and ancient literature. He deploys his wide learning with agility and grace.

Book The Ancient Quarrel Between Philosophy and Poetry

Download or read book The Ancient Quarrel Between Philosophy and Poetry written by Raymond Barfield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings, philosophy's language, concepts and imaginative growth have been heavily influenced by poetry and poets. Drawing on the work of a wide range of thinkers throughout the history of Western philosophy, Raymond Barfield explores the pervasiveness of poetry's impact on philosophy and, conversely, how philosophy has sometimes resisted or denied poetry's influence. Although some thinkers, like Giambatista Vico and Nietzsche, praised the wisdom of poets, and saw poetry and philosophy as mutually beneficial pursuits, others resented, diminished or eliminated the importance of poetry in philosophy. Beginning with the famous passage in Plato's Republic in which Socrates exiles the poets from the city, this book traces the history of the ancient quarrel between philosophy and poetry through the works of thinkers in the Western tradition ranging from Plato to the work of the contemporary thinker Mikhail Bakhtin.

Book Treasury of Wit Wisdom and Advice

Download or read book Treasury of Wit Wisdom and Advice written by Roy E Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My poetry is meant to touch the hearts of every man and woman regardless of their station in life. They reflect my ability to operate at any level of sophistication. Proof is in the number of my poems now published by the Society of Classical Poets, as well as shared online and in specialized collections such as Western Writers and my college poetry annual.Great artists like great poets do not unnecessarily aspire to greatness, but rather to elucidation of that which fascinates them to their own satisfaction. To be sure they are on a great quest to unlock secrets, detail events, resolve inconsistencies, further knowledge, and explore the eternal, whether that be in this world or the next. They wish to share their insights, visions, and beauty with everyone through their chosen medium of expression. What makes paintings great, humor funny and contagious, and poetry meaningful? They all appeal to the senses of the common man, or woman; are enjoyed, because they engage the mind with their creativity; and thrill with how they elicit a viscerally exciting response within the heart. Cumbersome constructs that obfuscate these reactive pleasures of the senses, mind and heart with vagueness in a picture, or portrait; comical thoughts that are humorous only to a few; and indecipherable use of language in a poem may be judged great by the social snobs, those aspiring to demonstrate their erudition, and those who consider themselves superior in their interpretation of art for the masses, but fail to inspire the rest of the world seeking beautiful simplicity.I, for one, have never been inspired by modern art with its amorphous forms. I would never hang a chaotic Picasso on any wall in my home, nor most of the junk foisted upon us in the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The timeless humor of Mark Twain while hearkening back to another era, triggers a feeling of common cause and common virtue central to the morality and culture of every era. The simple similitudes and comparisons that elicited laughter by the humorist Will Rogers endure over the decades. Even Benjamin Franklin's tongue in cheek writings echo through the centuries.I enjoy the simple humor of an Ogden Nash or a Doctor Seuss; thrill to the dark and mournful tones of an Edgar Alan Poe; love the clear descriptions of a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; and relax with the poems of a Robert Frost expositing and detailing simple life and simple values using simple country common terms and themes.I believe my poetry is educational, humorous, historically accurate, mythologically sensitive, romantic, inveighs against social and cultural degradation, and smashes untenable political concepts and icons. Although I could write doggerel at the bottom of the scale, modern monologue poetry without rhyme, or poetry of the highest linguistic order, I choose to write for all levels of taste, from the blue collar worker and family to the highest levels of society and academia.I purposely write so that every reader can understand my thought process, my realities, my fantasies, and my humor simply and comfortably reading or listening for themselves and feeling the heartfelt words which I hope to imbue with passion and perspective. Ultimately every reader is the judge of the value of the poetry and the poet. Each will find their own comfort level, comprehension of the poet's intent in writing the poem, and depth of feeling that the poems engender. Thus I leave it in your hands, mind, and heart.

Book Living Classics

Download or read book Living Classics written by S. J. Harrison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the extensive use of Latin and Greek literary texts in a range of recent poetry written in English. It contains both contributions from poets, who include Tony Harrison, Seamus Heaney, and Michael Longley, talking about their uses of classical literature in their own work in lyric poetry and in theatre poetry, and essays from academic experts on the same topics. Living Classics asks why contemporary poets are returning to making versions of and allusions to Greek and Roman literature in their work, and interrogates the parallel interest of modern classical scholars in the contemporary reception of classical texts.

Book excerpt: Joseph R. Allen's new edition of The Book of Songs restores Arthur Waley's definitive English translations to the original order and structure of the two-thousand-year-old Chinese text. One of the five Confucian classics, The Book of Songs is the oldest collection of poetry in world literature and the finest treasure of traditional songs that antiquity has left us. Arthur Waley's translations, now supplemented by fifteen new translations by Allen, are superb; the songs speak to us across millennia with remarkable directness and power. Where the other Confucian classics treat "outward things, deeds, moral precepts, the way the world works", Stephen Owen tells us in his foreword, The Book of Songs is "the Classic of the human heart and the human mind".
