An archer may shoot three arrows in a single bow in India, but TO KILL THREE BIRDS WITH ONE STONE? Young men stray from norms, society, and family to amass wealth and live the kind of life they crave. They progress, but they erroneously allow an outsider into their midst. That single action changes their destiny. That outsider, like Napoleon, captivates them like an unguarded city. He makes them burn the two bridges that link them to humanity and civilization. They swear an oath of compliance and begin to work on an idea their new mysterious leader presents. On the verge of success, something happens; success and survival lie in the hands of a humiliated insignificant member, Collins Benedict. Out of spite and like Judas Iscariot, Collins betrays his crew and slinks into the night, leaving his family behind. But his flight is risky; he is hunted and sought. Fasten your belt, for you are about to have a roller coaster ride to find out what happens to Collins Benedict. .

Book excerpt: Praise for this Cozy Murder Mystery - Two Birds With One Stone "I was captivated by the first page!" --Cozyreaders, Amazon.com "Always a good sign when the first book in a series grabs my attention in the first paragraph and never lets go. But then I have a weakness for well-written English cozies. Yes, that the two main characters who seemingly had nothing in common would become fast friends was predictable, but it's to Ms. Vansandt's credit that their individual strengths and weaknesses were anything but. Looking forward to the next installments!"--Joanna M., amazon.com "This was fun reading with good characters and plenty of twists in the plot. The personalities of the two main characters make a good contrast. I like the way they play off each other. Good suspense to the end. Thought I had the villain all figured out but in the end, I was fooled completely. Good read for a first time author. Looking forward to what else she writes next."--Surley R., amazon.com About the Mystery It's a beautiful summer and the busy village of Marsden-Lacey, England, has murder on its mind. Someone just whacked everyone's least favorite villager, Sir Carstons, on his villainous head. That's when American expats, paralegal Martha Littleword and book expert Helen Ryes, find themselves knee-deep in Yorkshire murder. Spirited empty-nesters, they throw their newbie detective hats into the ring, only to discover that a murder mystery can quickly turn from adventurous lark into personal peril. With a dash of Southern charm and humor, and the help of a few quirky villagers, the girls just might survive. They'll also have to figure out how to handle the local catch-of-the-day, Piers Cousins, and the cantankerous Chief of Police, DCI Johns. Will they or won't they? If they do, they might solve a murder, or two, along with a hundred-year-old mystery involving a Brontë sister and a famous piece of English history. Happy reading! Book Hubris Self Interest and America s Failed War in Afghanistan

Download or read book Hubris Self Interest and America s Failed War in Afghanistan written by Thomas P. Cavanna and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the conduct of the US-led post-9/11 war in Afghanistan. Adopting a long-term perspective, it argues that even though Washington initially had an opportunity to achieve its security goals and give Afghanistan a chance to enter a new era, it compromised any possibility of success from the very moment it let bin Laden escape to Pakistan in December 2001, and found itself locked in a strategic overreach. Given the bureaucratic and rhetorical momentum triggered by the war on terror in America, the Bush Administration was bound to deploy more resources in Afghanistan sooner or later (despite its focus on Iraq). The need to satisfy unfulfilled counter-terrorism objectives made the US dependent on Afghanistan’s warlords, which compromised the country’s stability and tarnished its new political system. The extension of the US military presence made Washington lose its leverage on the Pakistan army leaders, who, aware of America’s logistical dependency on Islamabad, supported the Afghan insurgents – their historical proxies - more and more openly. The extension of the war also contributed to radicalize segments of the Afghan and Pakistani populations, destabilizing the area further. In the meantime, the need to justify the extension of its military presence influenced the US-led coalition into proclaiming its determination to democratize and reconstruct Afghanistan. While highly opportunistic, the emergence of these policies proved both self-defeating and unsustainable due to an inescapable collision between the US-led coalition’s inherent self-interest, hubris, limited knowledge, limited attention span and limited resources, and, on the other hand, Afghanistan’s inherent complexity. As the critical contradictions at the very heart of the campaign increased with the extension of the latter’s duration, scale, and cost, America’s leaders, entrapped in path-dependence, lost their strategic flexibility. Despite debates on troops/resource allocation and more sophisticated doctrines, they repeated the same structural mistakes over and over again. The strategic overreach became self-sustaining, until its costs became intolerable, leading to a drawdown which has more to do with a pervasive sense of failure than with the accomplishment of any noble purpose or strategic breakthrough.

Book excerpt: Some things about the world appear to be different, but that’s only to be expected when one has been away for a hundred years or so. Coppélia’s robotic memory is supposed to be infallible but the additional differences she perceives are so slight that she dismisses them as within reasonable limits of variance. Today is the most important day since her return, as she has been asked to receive a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of her late friend, Karen Chambers, for her tireless work in integrating sophonts into society. The android takes the stage at the Oslo City Hall. In this third and final instalment of the Sophont trilogy, Karen’s granddaughter, Holly Bryson, also notices discrepancies between Coppélia’s anecdotal stories and the visual records that form part of her grandmother’s memoirs, but the inconsistencies she notices are not so easy to dismiss. The burning question at the fore of Holly’s mind is whether or not the android onstage is the same android that was her grandmother’s best friend. To find the answer to that question, Holly finds herself on a journey that, as yet, only exists in astrophysicist’s minds and calculations.
