Book Monitoring Threatened Species and Ecological Communities

Download or read book Monitoring Threatened Species and Ecological Communities written by Sarah Legge and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring is integral to all aspects of policy and management for threatened biodiversity. It is fundamental to assessing the conservation status and trends of listed species and ecological communities. Monitoring data can be used to diagnose the causes of decline, to measure management effectiveness and to report on investment. It is also a valuable public engagement tool. Yet in Australia, monitoring threatened biodiversity is not always optimally managed. Monitoring Threatened Species and Ecological Communities aims to improve the standard of monitoring for Australia's threatened biodiversity. It gathers insights from some of the most experienced managers and scientists involved with monitoring programs for threatened species and ecological communities in Australia, and evaluates current monitoring programs, establishing a baseline against which the quality of future monitoring activity can be managed. Case studies provide examples of practical pathways to improve the quality of biodiversity monitoring, and guidelines to improve future programs are proposed. This book will benefit scientists, conservation managers, policy makers and those with an interest in threatened species monitoring and management.

Book Conservation Biology for All

Download or read book Conservation Biology for All written by Navjot S. Sodhi and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation Biology for All provides cutting-edge but basic conservation science to a global readership. A series of authoritative chapters have been written by the top names in conservation biology with the principal aim of disseminating cutting-edge conservation knowledge as widely as possible. Important topics such as balancing conversion and human needs, climate change, conservation planning, designing and analyzing conservation research, ecosystem services, endangered species management, extinctions, fire, habitat loss, and invasive species are covered. Numerous textboxes describing additional relevant material or case studies are also included. The global biodiversity crisis is now unstoppable; what can be saved in the developing world will require an educated constituency in both the developing and developed world. Habitat loss is particularly acute in developing countries, which is of special concern because it tends to be these locations where the greatest species diversity and richest centres of endemism are to be found. Sadly, developing world conservation scientists have found it difficult to access an authoritative textbook, which is particularly ironic since it is these countries where the potential benefits of knowledge application are greatest. There is now an urgent need to educate the next generation of scientists in developing countries, so that they are in a better position to protect their natural resources.

Book Science and the Endangered Species Act

Download or read book Science and the Endangered Species Act written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-10-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a far-reaching law that has sparked intense controversies over the use of public lands, the rights of property owners, and economic versus environmental benefits. In this volume a distinguished committee focuses on the science underlying the ESA and offers recommendations for making the act more effective. The committee provides an overview of what scientists know about extinctionâ€"and what this understanding means to implementation of the ESA. Habitatâ€"its destruction, conservation, and fundamental importance to the ESAâ€"is explored in detail. The book analyzes: Concepts of speciesâ€"how the term "species" arose and how it has been interpreted for purposes of the ESA. Conflicts between species when individual species are identified for protection, including several case studies. Assessment of extinction risk and decisions under the ESAâ€"how these decisions can be made more effectively. The book concludes with a look beyond the Endangered Species Act and suggests additional means of biological conservation and ways to reduce conflicts. It will be useful to policymakers, regulators, scientists, natural-resource managers, industry and environmental organizations, and those interested in biological conservation.

Book Recovering Australian Threatened Species

Download or read book Recovering Australian Threatened Species written by Stephen Garnett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s nature is exceptional, wonderful and important. But much has been lost, and the ongoing existence of many species now hangs by a thread. Against a relentless tide of threats to our biodiversity, many Australians, and government and non-government agencies, have devoted themselves to the challenge of conserving and recovering plant and animal species that now need our help to survive. This dedication has been rewarded with some outstanding and inspiring successes: of extinctions averted, of populations increasing, of communities actively involved in recovery efforts. Recovering Australian Threatened Species showcases successful conservation stories and identifies approaches and implementation methods that have been most effective in recovering threatened species. These diverse accounts – dealing with threatened plants, invertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals – show that the conservation of threatened species is achievable: that it can be done and should be done. They collectively serve to inform, guide and inspire other conservation efforts. This is a book of hope and inspiration. It shows that with dedication, knowledge and support, we can retain and restore our marvellous natural heritage, and gift to our descendants a world that is as diverse, healthy and beautiful as that which we have inherited.

Book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020

Download or read book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 written by Stephen T. Garnett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-12 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 is the most comprehensive review of the status of Australia's avifauna ever attempted. The latest in a series of action plans for Australian birds that have been produced every decade since 1992, it is also the largest. The accounts in this plan have been authored by more than 300 of the most knowledgeable bird experts in the country, and feature far more detail than any of the earlier plans. This volume also includes accounts of over 60 taxa that are no longer considered threatened, mainly thanks to sustained conservation action over many decades. This extensive book covers key themes that have emerged in the last decade, including the increasing impact of climate change as a threatening process, most obviously in Queensland's tropical rainforests where many birds are being pushed up the mountains. However, the effects are also indirect, as happened in the catastrophic fires of 2019/20. Many of the newly listed birds are subspecies confined to Kangaroo Island, where fire destroyed over half the population. But there are good news stories too, especially on islands where there have been spectacular successes with predator control. Such uplifting results demonstrate that when action plans are followed by action on the ground, threatened species can indeed be recovered and threats alleviated.

Book U S Army Threatened and Endangered Species Research and Development Strategy and Action Plan

Download or read book U S Army Threatened and Endangered Species Research and Development Strategy and Action Plan written by David J. Tazik and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army's environmental vision, as described in the U.S. Army Environmental Strategy into the 21st Century, is to support a proactive conservation posture with respect to natural and cultural resources, including Threatened and Endangered species (TES) and associated ecosystems, while maintaining a mission focus. This report defines the Army's approach and framework for planning, execution, and transfer of research necessary to deal effectively with challenges to TES on Army lands. The strategy establishes the process, approach, and focus the Army research and development community will use to develop cost effective products and capabilities to meet requirements under the Endangered Species Act and applicable Army regulations. It also ensures efficient allocation of R and D resources, appropriate levels of interservice and interagency coordination, and timely transfer of useful research products to the field. The action plan translates the goals and objectives that support the strategy into specific implementing actions. Taking these actions will ensure that the strategy is carried out to support the vision. Endangered species, Ecosystems, Threatened species, U.S. Army Environmental Strategy.
