Book excerpt: New review of bird conservation compiled by Ian Burfield and Frans van Bommel In 1994 BirdLife International published the landmark Birds in Europe: their Conservation Status - the first ever review of the conservation status of all regularly occurring European birds. This book rapidly became a cornerstone of BirdLife's conservation work and is widely used by the European Commission, national governments and NGO's. Fully updated, Birds in Europe: Population Estimates, Trends and Conservation Status covers the European continent from Greenland in the west to the Urals in the east, and from Svalbard in the north to the Canary Islands in the south, including Balkan and Caucasian countries where political instability made data collection impossible in 1994. Setting a new standard for conservation data, Birds in Europe (1994) was highly praised for the depth and breadth of its research. Monitoring programmes established since then have provided an even higher accuracy and quality of data for Birds in Europe (2004). Full population data is included on all 526 species regularly occurring in Europe. Half a page is devoted to each species, including an illustration, distribution map, population and trends data, status information, and a concise summary of its status across Europe. What the reviewers said about Birds in Europe (1994): "This work can only be described as monumental" British Birds "Anyone travelling to a European country should use this book to find out what is really happening" British Birds "This professionally researched, excellently presented and yet affordable book provides a unique review of the conservation status of European birds" Biological Conservation "an astonishing tour de force" Ibis "an ornithological bible for any bookshelf..Bird Book of the Year 1995" Birdwatch "a veritable goldmine of information on breeding and wintering populations across the continent" Birdwatch "Should be compulsory reading for Europe's environment ministers" New Scientist "Any serious birder will find this fascinating reading" New Scientist "The baseline for the conservation of the birds of Europe" Birding World '...easily readable information has been crammed into a small space, with which it is possible to get a good general picture of the status of a species in Europe' - Alula. `An invaluable indicator of the health of Europe's birdlife, clearly showing where conservation efforts should be concentrated. The publishers should be congratulated.'Birdwatch`A fascinating browse... well-produced and not expensive, so everyone with a serious interest in the birds of Europe should own a copy.'Birding World`Genuinely continent-wide... a frightening amount of information is packed into each species account, but the layout is clear and you can cut to the chase quickly if you are in a hurry... Deserves a wide audience. Highly recommended.' British Birds

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated survey of the world's most endangered birds This illustrated book vividly depicts the most endangered birds in the world and provides the latest information on the threats each species faces and the measures being taken to save them. Today, 571 bird species are classified as critically endangered or endangered, and a further four now exist only in captivity. This landmark book features stunning photographs of 500 of these species—the results of a prestigious international photographic competition organized specifically for this book. It also showcases paintings by acclaimed wildlife artist Tomasz Cofta of the 75 species for which no photos are known to exist. The World's Rarest Birds has introductory chapters that explain the threats to birds, the ways threat categories are applied, and the distinction between threat and rarity. The book is divided into seven regional sections—Europe and the Middle East; Africa and Madagascar; Asia; Australasia; Oceanic Islands; North America, Central America, and the Caribbean; and South America. Each section includes an illustrated directory to the bird species under threat there, and gives a concise description of distribution, status, population, key threats, and conservation needs. This one-of-a-kind book also provides coverage of 62 data-deficient species.

Book excerpt: The playful puffin, the soaring eagle, the singing robin in the spring. The orchestra of tweets, hoots and caws, the tapestry of colours, the choreography of feathers in the sky... Aren't birds amazing? Think back to your childhood. Do you hear and see as many birds now as you did then? Probably not. Sadly, that's not just an impression - we've done the research. In our new report, the European Red List of Birds 2021, we have reviewed the regional extinction risk of all 544 bird species in Europe. We presented the results at two regional levels Europe and the European Union (EU). The data was collected by thousands of experts and volunteers from all over Europe, and the study's findings are alarming, to say the least. In Europe, a colossal 30% of all birds are in decline. 71 species are threatened with extinction, and an additional 34 species are considered 'Near Threatened'. Some fare worse than others: birds in marine and farmland habitats are those undergoing the sharpest declines and are those most threatened with extinction in both Europe and the EU. Why is this happening? Large-scale changes in how land is used, intensive farming, overexploiting the marine world, polluting inland waters, and unsustainable forest practices are the main drivers of this catastrophe. Additional pressure comes from hunting and illegal killing, the climate crisis, bycatch, and non-native species. Birds have travelled our planet's skies for millions of years. And yet, some birds may go extinct during our lifetime. The threat of extinction - a permanent, irreversible loss - should not be taken lightly. In particular, because birds are indicator species. Their health indicates the health of their environment, as they are sensitive to its changes. The living world is interconnected. When birds are in danger, by extension, we're all in danger. The good news is the plight of Europe's birds is entirely avoidable. What must be done to save our birds? Immediate, large-scale conservation action. Europe's decision-makers must reform farming, fishing, and forestry; and rethink the way our resources are produced and consumed.
