Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After such conflicts as World War II, Vietnam, and now the Persian Gulf, the First World War seems a distant, almost ancient event. It conjures up images of trenches, horse-drawn wagons, and old-fashioned wide-brimmed helmets--a conflict closer to the Civil War than to our own time. It hardly seems an American war at all, considering we fought for scarcely over a year in a primarily European struggle. But, as Ronald Schaffer recounts in this fascinating new book, the Great War wrought a dramatic revolution in America, wrenching a diverse, unregulated, nineteenth-century society into the modern age. Ranging from the Oval Office to corporate boardroom, from the farmyard to the battlefield, America in the Great War details a nation reshaped by the demands of total war. Schaffer shows how the Wilson Administration used persuasion, manipulation, direct control, and the cooperation of private industries and organizations to mobilize a freewheeling, individualist country. The result was a war-welfare state, imposing the federal government on almost every aspect of American life. He describes how it spread propaganda, enforced censorship, and stifled dissent. Political radicals, religious pacifists, German-Americans, even average people who voiced honest doubts about the war suffered arrest and imprisonment. The government extended its control over most of the nation's economic life through a series of new agencies--largely filled with managers from private business, who used their new positions to eliminate competition and secure other personal and corporate gains. Schaffer also details the efforts of scholars, scientists, workers, women, African- Americans, and of social, medical, and moral reformers, to use the war to advance their own agendas even as they contributed to the drive for victory. And not the least important is his account of how soldiers reacted to the reality of war--both at the front lines and at the rear--revealing what brought the doughboys to the battlefield, and how they went through not only horror and disillusionment but felt a fervent patriotism as well. Some of the upheavals Schaffer describes were fleeting--as seen in the thousands of women who had to leave their wartime jobs when the boys came home--but others meant permanent change and set precedents for such future programs as the New Deal. By showing how American life would never be the same again after the Armistice, America in the Great War lays a new foundation for understanding both the First World War and twentieth-century America.

Book Customs and Cultures

Download or read book Customs and Cultures written by Eugene Albert Nida and published by William Carey Library. This book was released on 1975 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the church meaningfully and intelligently engage cultures with Christianity? Oftentimes, it is not the message but the messenger that provides the greatest stumbling block for the average non-Christian. A missionary's ability to identify with the people, not in sympathy, but in empathy, is one of the keys. Language is another crucial factor. Anthropology and missions have much to learn from each other. Customs and Cultures provides practical ways missionaries can become acquainted with the cultural anthropology of the local community. Eugene Nida, a leading scholar and devout Christian, presents a thorough study of the means and methods which best communicate Christianity to people of diverse backgrounds. Dr. Nida is uniquely equipped to write this book because he is a well-known specialist in linguistics, anthropology studies, and the interpretation of the Christian faith, who worked with missionaries on translation problems for over thirty years. The development of the church is the real goal. The power of Jesus Christ working through his consecrated servants can sanctify all of life to the glory of God.

Book The Struggle for Public Education

Download or read book The Struggle for Public Education written by Donald Parkerson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great pendulum of educational reform recently has begun its inexorable swing toward a new understanding of education. The thirty-year dominance of the authoritarian approach, complete with standardized assessments, distended bureaucracies and school consolidation based on the business model, appears to be over. Capped by the recent departure of the No Child Left behind Act and replaced with a new congressional authorization – the Every Child Achieves Act – we are witnessing a distinct move toward a more democratic model of education. This book places the tension between these two broadly defined archetypes in the context of the central themes of American education. These include the structure and organization of American schools, the struggle for diversity, curriculum and instruction, classroom discipline, moral education, testing and assessment, and the rights and responsibilities of teachers and students. By organizing these themes into a more understandable and relevant thematic context, readers will be able to appreciate the changes in the field of education over the years as well as the cacophonous bickering over education policy - today and yesterday.

Book Statistical Inference as Severe Testing

Download or read book Statistical Inference as Severe Testing written by Deborah G. Mayo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mounting failures of replication in social and biological sciences give a new urgency to critically appraising proposed reforms. This book pulls back the cover on disagreements between experts charged with restoring integrity to science. It denies two pervasive views of the role of probability in inference: to assign degrees of belief, and to control error rates in a long run. If statistical consumers are unaware of assumptions behind rival evidence reforms, they can't scrutinize the consequences that affect them (in personalized medicine, psychology, etc.). The book sets sail with a simple tool: if little has been done to rule out flaws in inferring a claim, then it has not passed a severe test. Many methods advocated by data experts do not stand up to severe scrutiny and are in tension with successful strategies for blocking or accounting for cherry picking and selective reporting. Through a series of excursions and exhibits, the philosophy and history of inductive inference come alive. Philosophical tools are put to work to solve problems about science and pseudoscience, induction and falsification.

Book History and Philosophy of Psychology

Download or read book History and Philosophy of Psychology written by Prof. Chavi Bhargava Sharma and published by The Readers Paradise . This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history and philosophy of psychology is an account of the past, a record of how and what happened to make psychology what it is today. Like all history the history of psychology is both interesting and boring too. It has been taught in universities as ‘Systems and Theories of Psychology’, ‘History and Philosophy of Psychology’ etc. but is a mandatory paper for all those studying psychology in any university in the world. Yet surprisingly not very many books have been written. The books on the grand historical evolution of psychology from philosophy are complex and academic. For students the paper becomes theoretical and less exciting too. When I started my teaching career ‘Systems and Theories of Psychology’ was the first paper I taught in Daulat Ram College and Lady Shriram College, University of Delhi. It was a difficult paper to begin your career with and that is when I looked at ways to make the paper interesting and captivating. This book owes its genesis to that phase. History can be looked as a documentation of the past but history is also an autobiography and a biography. The history of psychology is also its autobiography and biography. It is alive with trials and mistakes, discoveries and aha moments and is a story waiting to unfold, waiting to be read. This book is written for those entering the world of psychology. It gives an insight into the evolution and genesis of the current concepts and theories. An attempt has been made to keep it simple and easy to understand. In the 10 chapters an attempt has been to parsimoniously capture the tenets of the various schools of psychology and the contributions of various psychologists who have been instrumental in creating the discipline of psychology. Each idea, each thesis that was formulated led to an anti thesis, a revolution, and a synthesis and that in a nutshell is the story of the evolution of psychology. The book follows this paradigm. If the book can generate interest to read in depth, then the book’s existence is validated and I do hope that the book makes you the reader look for more and I hope it makes you curious and interested in the field of psychology

Book Observing Interaction

Download or read book Observing Interaction written by Roger Bakeman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-03-13 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mothers and infants exchanging gleeful vocalizations, married couples discussing their problems, children playing, birds courting and monkeys fighting have this in common: their interactions with others unfold over time. Almost anyone who is interested can observe and describe such phenomena. But usually scientists demand more. They want observations that are replicable and amenable to scientific analysis, while still faithful to the dynamics of the phenomena studied. This book provides a straightforward introduction to scientific methods for observing social behavior. Because of the importance of time in the dynamics of social interaction, sequential approaches to analyzing and understanding social behavior are emphasized. An advanced knowledge of statistical analysis is not required. Instead, the authors present fundamental concepts and offer practical advice.
