Book excerpt: We are surrounded by images in our daily life as never before. In Jasser Membreno's beautiful book,Pensamientos, he relieves our saturation from the dense mundane and lifts us into the heights of human imagination, on a masterful flight to the world of his unique imagery and abstract poetry. It is a journey through his surrealistic narrative without a narrative, with fantastical creatures--reawakening our imagination from the overexposed visual landscape of our bit-filled times to the thrilling recollection of the reality and absurdity of our dream worlds. He reminds us of the vastness of the human mind. On entering this universe you will often find yourself in two places at once, and equally as often in two languages at once. Translated from English into Spanish, laid side by side, Gloria Alvarez has kept the keen sonic sensibility present in Membreno's pointed poetry, at times coy, at times absurd.

Book excerpt: A rose growing in the light of love . . . ; the soul coming to rest within the warmth of inspiration . . . , or love shining like a star in the darkness . . . , these and other thoughts expressed in this collection are the result of feelings of the heart blending with life experience; this is the poetry of Pablo Soto Caudillo. Simple words and a soft-spoken poetic voice communicate his free verse of love, hope, and promise. In addition, his simplicity and imagination not only bring to life the characters that occupy the time and space of his lyric verse, but also create an environment touched by magic and wonder, bewilderment and uncertainty, confrontation and courage, or love and separation. Through his free verse and lyric verse, Pablo Soto Caudillo will reach out to all reading age groups. Book Jos Mart the United States and the Marxist Interpretation of Cuban History

Download or read book Jos Mart the United States and the Marxist Interpretation of Cuban History written by Carlos Ripoll and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief volume is an eloquent statement on the meaning of Jose Marti's thought as well as on how his thought has been harnessed to the needs of ideology in present-day Cuba. Hence, Jose Marti, the United States and the Marxist Interpretation of Cuban History should quite properly be viewed as a contribution to the sociology of knowledge, and the political processing of the literature. Professor Ripoll's volume gives special attention to Marti's writings on the United States: without sparing the colonialist and annexationist currents of the times, Marti in his writing demonstrated a full and balanced sense of pluralist currents in the United States. The author sees Marti, in his desire for redemption, as a truer socialist and revolutionary than those who seek to cloak themselves in his words. Because Marti believed freedom to be indispensable for the advancement of society, efforts to hitch Marti to a single ideological post are considered futile.

  • Author : Alvin O. Korte
  • Publisher : MSU Press
  • Release : 2012-03-01
  • ISBN : 160917321X
  • Pages : 526 pages

Download or read book Nosotros written by Alvin O. Korte and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much knowledge and understanding can be generated from the experiences of everyday life. In this engaging study, Alvin O. Korte examines how this concept applies to Spanish-speaking peoples adapted to a particular locale, specifically the Hispanos and Hispanas of northern New Mexico. Drawing on social philosopher Alfred Schutz’s theory of typification, Korte looks at how meaning and identity are crafted by quotidian activities. Incorporating phenomenological and ethnomethodological strategies, the author investigates several aspects of local Hispano culture, including the oral tradition, leave-taking, death and remembrances of the dead, spirituality, and the circle of life. Although avoiding a social-problems approach, the book devotes necessary attention to mortificación (the death of the self), desmadre (chaos and disorder), and mancornando (cuckoldry). Nosotros is a vivid and insightful exploration with applications in numerous fields.

Book Care Across Generations

Download or read book Care Across Generations written by Kristin E. Yarris and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global inequalities make it difficult for parents in developing nations to provide for their children. Some determine that migration in search of higher wages is their only hope. Many studies have looked at how migration transforms the child–parent relationship. But what happens to other generational relationships when mothers migrate? Care Across Generations takes a close look at grandmother care in Nicaraguan transnational families, examining both the structural and gendered inequalities that motivate migration and caregiving as well as the cultural values that sustain intergenerational care. Kristin E. Yarris broadens the transnational migrant story beyond the parent–child relationship, situating care across generations and embedded within the kin networks in sending countries. Rather than casting the consequences of women's migration in migrant sending countries solely in terms of a "care deficit," Yarris shows how intergenerational reconfigurations of care serve as a resource for the wellbeing of children and other family members who stay behind after transnational migration. Moving our perspective across borders and over generations, Care Across Generations shows the social and moral value of intergenerational care for contemporary transnational families.

Book Ma ana in Cuba

Download or read book Ma ana in Cuba written by Joe Azel and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mañana in Cuba is a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Cuba with an incisive perspective of the Cuban frame of mind and its relevancy for Cuba's future. Part one of the book critically explores the mindset Cubans have developed living under a totalitarian system and introduces modern concepts of choice architecture and governance that can be employed Mañana in Cuba to foster a democratic civil society. Part two turns to a discussion of the principles that should guide sociopolitical and economic transition policies in line with Cuban culture and history. Mañana in Cuba offers a sophisticated analysis of the challenges and opportunities that will be present in post-Castro Cuba with an eye to intelligent, nuanced, and often "outside the box" solutions to aid business and government policymakers interested in Cuba's future. A unique aspect of this book is that it does not seek to unnaturally mend a decimated civil society, but rather, it offers policy approaches anchored on current Cuban ethos and society. This is a book about finding ways to facilitate the Cuban transition from totalitarianism and a centrally planned economy to liberal democracy and a free-market economic system. As the author argues, the alternative visions presented for Cuba's future matter because one of them will crystallize into the sociopolitical and economic narrative of the country for generations to come.

Book Evidentiality and Epistemic Modality in Spanish Semi Auxiliaries

Download or read book Evidentiality and Epistemic Modality in Spanish Semi Auxiliaries written by Bert Cornillie and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the Spanish evidential semi-auxiliaries parecer and resultar, the modal constructions with amenazar and prometer, and the modal auxiliaries poder, deber and tener que. These verbs have never been considered together in a global approach that transcends the classical "verbal periphrases" model. The book proposes a cognitive-functional account of evidentiality and modality in Spanish with special attention to subjectivity and grounding. The theoretical reflection relies on empirical evidence of two sorts: synchronic and diachronic corpus-analyses alternate with tests that measure the semantic and pragmatic compatibility of the evidential and epistemic constructions with specific sentences. Following the assumption that linguistic forms are determined by their meaning, the array of constructions that characterizes the different verbs justifies their grouping in three pairs of (semi-)auxiliaries: parecer vs resultar, amenazar vs prometer and poder vs deber/tener que. The distributional differences observed in the corpus are further shown to correlate with different degrees of grammaticalization. Primarily intended for scholars working in the field of Spanish functional linguistics, the monograph is also relevant for grammaticalization studies and for cognitive-semantic research at large. Given its combined theoretical and applied character, the volume is also of interest to anyone concerned with syntactic processes, lexical semantics or the wider area of discourse analysis and pragmatics.

Book Give Me Liberty

Download or read book Give Me Liberty written by David E. Hoffman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning Washington Post reporter David E. Hoffman comes the riveting biography of Oswaldo Payá, a dissident who dared to defy Fidel Castro, inspiring thousands of Cubans to fight for democracy. Oswaldo Payá was seven years old when Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba, promising to create a “free, democratic, and just Cuba.” But Castro instead created an authoritarian regime with little tolerance of free speech or thought. His secret police were trained to crush dissent by East Germany’s ruthless Stasi. Throughout Cuba’s 20th century history, the dream of democracy was often just within reach, only to be dashed by dictatorship and revived again by a new generation. Payá inherited this dream and it became his life’s work. As a teenager in Communist Cuba, he led a protest against the Soviet-led shattering of the Prague Spring. Before long, he was sent to Castro’s forced labor camps. Payá later became a leading voice of opposition and formed a pro-democracy movement. A devoted Catholic, he championed a simple, bedrock belief that rights are bestowed by God, and not the state. Every day, he witnessed these rights trampled in Cuba. He could not stay silent. Payá’s most daring challenge to the Cuban government was the Varela Project, a one-page citizen petition demanding free speech, a free press, freedom of association, freedom of belief, private enterprise, free elections and freedom for political prisoners. More than 35,000 people signed the Varela Project, an extraordinary outpouring of protest—with nothing more than pen and paper—against Castro’s decades of despotism. The regime responded by ignoring the petition, arresting dozens of Payá’s followers and sending them to prison for many years. After receiving multiple death threats, Payá was killed in a suspicious car wreck on a remote country road. Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter David E. Hoffman returns with an epic portrait of a lone individual who had the courage, faith, and persistence to struggle for democracy against an unforgiving dictator. At its heart, Give Me Liberty is a sweeping account of one country’s tragic and continuing struggle for its freedom.
