Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of two preached retreats I gave to mark the recent Year of Consecrated Life (2015). However, the origin of the material goes much further back, drawing on my teaching experience both at Manresa Centre of Spirituality and at Milltown Institute (covering a period of thirty years). In both places I had taught courses on religious life – its history, theology, and most of all its underlying spirituality. Indeed, I have always used history and theology (and other disciplines such as psychology and anthropology) in service of exploring and renewing the spirituality of religious life. Another way of saying this is that I am above all interested in values (as appreciated, appropriated, and articulated). This lies behind my decision to structure the talks (now the book) almost entirely around the vows. After an initial chapter on the origins of religious life, I devote two chapters each to poverty, chastity, and obedience. My emphasis is not on the vows as such (dealing with questions that Canon Law might raise) but on the motivating values that the vows express. Only these values can explain why people enter and flourish in religious life. All religious, without distinction, are called to be “radical and free”.

Book Life and Holiness

Download or read book Life and Holiness written by Thomas Merton and published by Colchis Books. This book was released on 1963 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is intended to be a very simple book, an elementary treatment of a few basic ideas in Christian spirituality. Hence it should be useful to any Christian, and indeed to anyone who wants to acquaint himself with some principles of the interior life as it is understood in the Catholic Church. Nothing is here said of such subjects as “contemplation” or even “mental prayer.” And yet the book emphasizes what is at once the most common and the most mysterious aspect in the Christian life: grace, the power and the light of God in us, purifying our hearts, transforming us in Christ, making us true sons of God, enabling us to act in the world as his instruments for the good of all men and for his glory. This is therefore a meditation on some fundamental themes appropriate to the active life. It must be said at once that the active life is essential to every Christian. Clearly the active life must mean more than the life which is led in religious institutes of men and women who teach, care for the sick, and so on. (When one is talking of the “active life” as opposed to the “contemplative life,” this is the usual reference.) Here action is not looked at in opposition to contemplation, but as an expression of charity and as a necessary consequence of union with God by baptism.

Book Principles of Religious Life

Download or read book Principles of Religious Life written by Fracnis Cuthbert Doyle and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE chief object for which this work has been written is to furnish those who wish to lead a solidly devout life in the Ecclesiastical, in the Religious, or in the Secular State, with a manual or text-book containing, in as compendious a form as possible, the' principles' upon which such a life must be built. The sources whence materials for an undertaking of this kind may be drawn are various and numerous; but out of the many at my disposal, two are especially deserving of mention, inasmuch as it has been by the doctrine which I have learnt from them, that I have been guided in much that has been treated of in this book. The first of these are the works of Cassian, to which, as a child of St. Benedict, I felt myself drawn as it were by instinct; for, it was from the world-famed 'Conferences' of this learned ascetic that our holy Father drew much of that spiritual lore which is so conspicuous in the various enactments of his Rule, and to the pages of which he refers his children, for those sublime lessons of spiritual wisdom, which will lead them to the topmost height of Christian perfection. Cassian's teaching, save upon the question of divine grace, is unexceptionally good. His deficiency upon this point may be satisfactorily accounted for, if we bear in mind that in his day various questions which arise out of this most intricate subject had not been thoroughly examined into and set at rest for ever by the infallible decision of the Church. The second is the 'Theologia Mystica' of Father Dominick Schram, O.S.B., in which that erudite Religious has bequeathed to us valuable treasures of Christian asceticism arranged with scientific accuracy, and stored away with scholastic neatness and precision. The plan of which I have made use for reducing to order the mass of material which presented itself to my hands, is a very simple one. It may be stated thus; in the life of every man there is an ultimate end, which is God. But in order to reach that ultimate end, man must comply with certain conditions which have been laid down by God for the attainment of so magnificent a destiny. Therefore, besides his ultimate end, man has also a subordinate end, or object in life. This is to win for himself that measure of perfection which is compatible with his state here below. Perfection, however, is made up of three elements; of charity, of purity of heart, and of humility, all which must be made so to enter the very fibres of his being, as to become part and parcel of himself. To obtain this subordinate end, there are various means at man's disposal, chief among which are, prayer, divine grace, docility to the movements and inspirations of the Holy Spirit, imitation of Christ, and mortification, both internal and external. Upon each of these subjects, and upon the various ramifications into which some of them logically lead, ample instructions have been given. These will, perhaps, prove useful to those who are endeavouring to lead devout lives in the world. For those who wish to enter the Ecclesiastical State, there are chapters devoted to the treatment of subjects which are special to their sacred calling. Finally, for those who, in order to obtain perfection, make their self renunciation perpetual by means of vows in the Religious State, several chapters have been set aside for the explanation of those holy bonds by which they are more closely united to God. Also, an Appendix has been added, in which each chapter has been carefully analysed. These outlines or sketches of the matter which the reader shall have already perused will, it is hoped, enable him to obtain a firmer grasp of it; they will help him to imprint it more deeply upon his mind; and if he should happen to be sealed with the priestly character, and entrusted with the cure of souls, they will furnish him with plans by the aid of which he will be able to use the doctrine contained in this volume for the spiritual training of those committed to his charge.

Book Reflections on Life as a Catholic

Download or read book Reflections on Life as a Catholic written by Richard Emond and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a modern Apologia Pro Vita Sua I have attempted to give the rationale for my chronicling of a life that is now in its twilight years. The community of believers is a heterogeneous polyglot to say the least. The New Testament describes them thusly: there are those who receive the word vicariously and quickly fall away. Others receive it with joy but, when temptation comes, fall away. Then there are those who receive the word, digest it, and grow in faith and strength and never falter or look back. For myself I do not fit any of the above situations, but, rather, suggest that there is another category, of which more than a few belong but few would confess to. There is what I would refer to as a "silent majority," if you will, who remain a part of the faithful, attend Mass every Sunday, and consider themselves practicing Catholics. Yet they harbor many reservations as to the dictates of the hierarchy and do not takes seriously many of the prohibitions imposed upon them, particularly concerning the matter of birth control. Many choose to follow their informed consciences and rationalize their consequent decisions accordingly. These are often referred to by the hierarchy as "cafeteria Catholics," a pejorative appellation in current vogue. Actually I've had some very good meals in cafeterias and find the label offensive and judgemental. These individuals reject the "one size fits all" approach that the Church finds so convenient to adopt.

Book Salt of the Earth Light of the World

Download or read book Salt of the Earth Light of the World written by Peter Varengo and published by Wipf and Stock. This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus calls us to be salt and light in our world. Salt and light are both important in our lives - salt to add flavour and to preserve freshness; light for our safe well-being and to enable us to see clearly. The call is for the disciples of the Lord to bring freshness and direction to the lives of others by the qualities we associate with salt and light. They represent creativity, confidence, hope and openness to whatever God requires of us as disciples - people who live for others, being for them the signs and realities of God's presence and God's purposes. One way we discern God's purposes within the long teaching tradition of our church is by listening and sharing the Scriptures, broken for us each Sunday at Mass, offered to us by faithful preaching of the Word of God or by thoughtful reflection in classroom and other settings. The task of preachers, teachers and commentators is somehow to bring the selected readings to life so that they connect with our lives as we gather to worship, to listen, to be strengthened and encouraged in our life of faith week by week. This new series of reflections on the Sunday Gospels in the year of Matthew is not concerned primarily to be commentary on the text but on the message of the text; their purpose is not so much to inform as to inspire. The reflections by a master craftsman are written to unpack the Gospel - not simply Matthew's special theological emphases but his teaching about how we are to live with one another in the stuff of the everyday. Integral to the book is the author's assumption that life and faith belong together; that God who brings freshness and light in our lives is lavish with gifts, patient and energising for goodness, for fruitfulness, for life in its fullness. Here is a book that takes seriously the command of Jesus that we be life giving in our world, encouraging us to become people fully alive with the energy of the life of the Creator. The book is for priests and preachers, parents and teachers and for all who seek the transformation and fullness of life that God offers us in the breaking of the Word and who have the courage and the wisdom to accept the challenge of the Word and incarnate its message in our daily lives. Peter Varengo is a Salesian priest, presently engaged in full time Adult Retreat Ministry. He has been a professed religious for more than fifty years and a priest for more than forty. He studied Theology at the Salesian University in Rome; and Religious Education in Maynooth (Ireland) and in Boston College (USA). He has taught at Catholic Theological College in Melbourne and been involved in parish ministry for many years.

Book The Principles of the Religious Life

Download or read book The Principles of the Religious Life written by Peter Cotel and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first point that must be made of this book is that the dialect is older English."But now, my good uncle, the world is here waxen such, and so great perils appear here to fall at hand, that me thinketh the greatest comfort that a man can have is, when he may see that he shall soon be gone." (Pg 1-2)The reader will have to accustom themselves to a learning curve. In the first Chapter St. Thomas More, tells us that philosophers of old created ways to be comforted in tribulation. These pagan philosophers told their followers that they should place of little value on worldly goods and honors. But as the Saint continues on,"for they never stretched so far, but that they leave untouched, for lack of necessary knowledge, that special point which is not only the chief comfort of all, but, without which also, all other comforts are nothing. That is, to wit, the referring of the final end of their comfort unto God, and the repute and take for the special cause of comfort, that by the patient sufferance of their tribulation they shall attain His favour, and for their pain receive reward at His hand in Heaven." (Pg 9)He ends the first chapter by saying, "Honorsa medicum; propter necessitatem etenim ordinavit eum Altissimus." - honor the physician for him hath the high God ordained for thy necessity. (Eccl 38) St. Thomas more points to this heavenly physician as Christ Himself applying His own blood as our medicine. The second chapter tells us that it is faith that must be the foundation for men's comfort. "That is, to wit, the ground and foundation of faith, without which had ready before, all the spiritual comfort that any man may speak of can never avail a fly. For likewise as it were utterly vain to lay natural reasons of comfort to him that hath no wit, so were it undoubtedly frustrate to lay spiritual causes of comfort to him that hath no faith." (Pg 11)St. Thomas More in the third chapter assigns the first comfort as the following: "...the desire and longing to be by God comforted." (Pg 14) St. Thomas more writes that those who seek comfort in anything outside of God will never become comforted. He quotes St. Bernard: "He that in tribulation turneth himself unto worldly vanities, to get help and comfort by them, fareth like a man that in peril of drowning catcheth whatsoever cometh next to hand, and that holdeth he fast, be it never so simple a stick; but then that helpeth him not, for that stick he draweth down under the water with him, and there lie they drowned both together." (Pg 15)The fourth chapter bring forth the idea that tribulation was meant to bring men of good will (Luke 2:14) to closer to God. "Some are in the beginning of tribulation very stubborn and stiff against God, and yet at length tribulation bringeth them home." (Pg 18)St. Thomas More continues to bring this point home by writing: "The proud king Pharaoh did abide and endure two or three of the first plagues, and would not once stoop at them. But then God laid on a sorer lash that made him cry to him for help, and then sent he for Moses and Aaron, and confessed himself a sinner, and God for good and righteous, and prayed them to pray for him, and to withdraw that plague, and he would let them go. But when his tribulation was withdrawn, then, was he naught again. So was his tribulation occasion of his profit, and his help again cause of his harm. For his tribulation made him call to God, and his help made hard his heart again." (Pg 18)

Book The Life of Mary Baker G Eddy and the History of Christian Science

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This controversial biography of the founder of the Christian Science church was serialized in McClure's Magazine in 1907-8 and published as a book the next year. It disappeared almost overnight and has been difficult to find ever since. Although a Canadian mewspaperwoman named Georgine Milmine collected the material and was credited as the author, The Life Of Mary Baker G. Eddy was actually written by Willa Cather, an editor at McClure's at that time. In his introduction to this Bison Book edition, David Stouck reveals new evidence of Cather's authorship of The Life of Mary Baker G. Eddy. He discusses her fidelity to facts and her concern with psychology and philosophy that would take creative form later on. Indeed, this biography contains "some of the finest portrait sketches and reflections on human nature that Willa Cather would ever write."
