Book The Praises of God in Psalms Hymns and Spiritual Songs

Download or read book The Praises of God in Psalms Hymns and Spiritual Songs written by Kenneth Dix and published by Revival Literature. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the preface: "I was first introduced to the practice of exclusive Psalmody over 30 years ago. In light of Paul's exhortation to sing 'psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, ' I quite naturally thought that singing Psalms "only was nothing more than a tradition. But I was soon to be told that those three words of Paul were nothing more than titles for differing parts of the Psalter. I was unconvinced, for the simple reason that I found no support for this idea in the Bible that I was using. ...It is not my desire to stir up strife, although I realize that such a hope may well be just a little naive. Rather, it is my wish to show that those of us who love to sing the hymns can do so with a clear conscience, because we believe that Scripture directs us to do so."

Book Gospel Music or the Singing of David s Psalms

Download or read book Gospel Music or the Singing of David s Psalms written by Nathaniel Holmes and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This famous 17th century tract is a demonstration of the nature and necessity of singing the Psalms of David in private (at home) and in corporate worship (with the congregation), something that began to be contested in his own day. Holmes covers six areas that teach the church how to think about Psalm singing: 1) the warrant that we have coming from the word of God to do so; 2) its unquestionable nature through the history of the church; 3) the ancient use of singing; 4) the usefulness of singing the Psalms of David, and 5) the objections of unjust men against psalm singing. He also adds in as an appendix the manner in which the New England churches sang Psalms. This is a very helpful introductory work to aid the Christian to think soberly about how Psalmody is handled in the word of God and for the church of Jesus Christ. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They call him Mr. Purple, and this is his Psalmody. The Purple Psalmody is a collection of musical settings of the psalms for Sundays, solemnities, feasts, and memorials of the Catholic Church. It began with The Queen Stands, a song for the Solemnity of the Assumption, and ended up with Highest Honor of our Race, for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Between the two Marian songs are more than a hundred other musical settings composed sporadically within a span of almost three decades. These songs have been used in the author’s music ministry at several Catholic schools and parishes both in the Philippines (where he came from) and the United States (where he now resides). Varied in styles and moods, these musical settings are the author’s personal expression of faith in, and love for, Jesus through Mary. They are his personal prayer to God. But they can be yours, too. Come sing—and pray twice, as St. Augustine said in effect—with Mr. Purple. Come sing The Purple Psalmody.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Psalms: With the Words Printed for Expressive Singing and Accompanied by the Tunes Contained in the "Scottish Psalmody" Psalmody holds a position distinct from the other departments of public worship. It is the utterance of the people as distinguished from' the utterance of the minister; and just as high attainment in the art of delivery is sought after by the former, so must the latter seek to cultivate that power of utterance for which the language of music has been given to them. The peculiar power of Psalmody, as a social religious exercise, consists in its being conducted through a medium which enables many, with one heart and one voice, to glorify God; but in producing this unity of design, it must be remembered that the worshippers are each dependent one upon another, -each must feel that he sings to edify others, and expects on his own part assistance from his fellow-worshippers. The delivery must be emotional and sympathetic emotional, by each worshipper feeling what is sung sympathetic, by each showing to others, in the mode of utterance, that it is felt for except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? To carry out this view of the true end and aim of Psalmody this work has been com piled. It is not possible by any mechanical contrivance to implant devotional feeling in the heart, but it is possible to excite or stimulate it; and more especially, taking a congre gatien in its collective capacity, each dependent upon another, important assistance may be derived from a contrivance even mechanical in its nature, which is suggestive and explanatory in its design. Singing with the spirit must come from within, but sing ing with the understanding also may be aided from without. Book A God Who Comes Near

Download or read book A God Who Comes Near written by Rhoda A. Carpenter and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written to reawaken awareness of both the beauty of the psalms and their ability to speak with relevance to our contemporary culture--a generation in danger of losing the psalmist’s voice. It is written for those who may have felt marginalized by church or society, whether from loss, tragedy, illness, or misuse of power. May this generation hear the voice of the psalmist pointing them to a God who desires honest expression, who comes close to listen to their cries, and points them to a deeper understanding of who he is and how he loves. May the words of the psalmist lead them out of isolation and into authentic community. The author’s approach to the psalms begins with recognition of the intertwining of imagery with the literary structure of the poetry found in the psalms. The imagery in the psalms comes from an earthy connection of the psalmist with the land of scripture. Understanding the imagery allows the reader to “see” the psalms and receive the message. It deepens the relevance of the psalms to speak into the myriad contexts in our present day multi-cultural world. Recognition of the religious and social dynamics of ancient Israelite life--such as kingship, Zion as a place of God’s presence, and the covenant relationship of a people with their God--provide further clues to understanding the message of the psalms. Along with the rich imagery present in the psalms, this book explores the literary structure of the poetry in the psalms. Recognition of key characteristics of Hebrew poetry allows the words to “sing.” In every psalm a vivid echo of ancient voices resounds, building century upon century of expression, reaching into the present. If one reads carefully, the melodies and message can be heard. The music of the psalms breathe with life and relevance. Psalms are filled with movement to hope and praise. Yet, they address the reality that life at times hurts. The psalmist gives honest voice to pain and affirms God’s presence in the darkest moments of life. This book explores the importance of lament both individually and in community as a vehicle to healing and a deeper understanding of God’s care. The book closes with an examination of five select psalms that are representative of different types of psalms found in the psalter. They were chosen because of personal relevance. Through imagery, structure, and voice the psalms convey movement from honest expression to hope. Hope leads to thanksgiving. Praise resounds because of who God is and how he cares.
