Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER H. THE EXTENT OF THE EVIL. 1. Its Numerical Strength. The growth of Mormonism has been without a parallel in the history of any religious or irreligious movement. In 1826 Joseph Smith claimed to have discovered the gold plates on which, it was alleged, were engraved the contents of the Book of Mormon. In 1830 the Church was organized in Seneca County, New York, with but six members. On the 14th of April, 184-7, a party of one hundred and forty-eight, led by Brigham Young, started for the Rocky Mountains, and, on the 24th. of July, 1847, entered Salt Lake Valley. In 1860 there had come to be forty thousand Mormons in Utah. In ten years the number had increased to eighty-seven thousand. In ten years more, namely, in 1880, there were one hundred and twenty-five thousand in Utah, with about twentyfive thousand more in the adjacent States and Territories. There are at least one hundred thousand more in their mission-fields and conferences through out the world. So that in the little more than fifty' years since the Church was organized, a man who came forward with a lie in his mouth and ajrtolen manuscript in his hand to proclaim one of the most' monstrous delusions of all time, has obtained a following of more than a quarter of million of souls. From this stand-point the outlook for the future is most alarming. Fifty years ago the Church began its work with six members--now it numbers two hundred and fifty thousand: then, the first convert and dupe mortgaged his farm to publish the first edition of the Book of Mormon; now, a million dollars is collected annually through the tithing system: then, the handful of believers were without character, reputation, or influence, now, the leaders are, many of them, men of learning and...

Book Under the Banner of Heaven

Download or read book Under the Banner of Heaven written by Jon Krakauer and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2004-06-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of Into the Wild and Into Thin Air, this extraordinary work of investigative journalism takes readers inside America’s isolated Mormon Fundamentalist communities. • Now an acclaimed FX limited series streaming on HULU. “Fantastic.... Right up there with In Cold Blood and The Executioner’s Song.” —San Francisco Chronicle Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a multi-layered, bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith. Along the way he uncovers a shadowy offshoot of America’s fastest growing religion, and raises provocative questions about the nature of religious belief.

Book The Mormon Problem Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mormon Problem Classic Reprint written by Walter M. Barrows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mormon Problem Utah 3. Territory until the people have adopted a constitution prohibiting polygamy. But will the people of Utah, a large majority of whom are Mormons, ever consent to do this? Is there any change of sentiment in regard to polygamy observable among them? Are the agencies now at work sufficient to solve this vexed Mormon problem? I believe that they are, if time enough is given them; but, with their present force, it will require a long time. The work could be hastened vastly if Congress would assist the Liberal party of Utah with judicious legislation, and if the Christian people east and west of us would assist in increasing the number and efficiency of the reformatory agencies now at work. It is my purpose in this article to describe these agencies, and to suggest how they may be strengthened. Book Bridges Ministering to Those Who Question

Download or read book Bridges Ministering to Those Who Question written by David B. Ostler and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Edition, with a new chapter on ministering to and within mixed-faith marriages and families. With the advancement of the internet, changing worldviews, and the rising generation of millennials, Latter-day Saints today face unique challenges to faith on an unprecedented scale. Unlike most books written to help those struggling with their testimonies, Bridges: Ministering to Those Who Question is geared at helping local leaders and family members better understand the sources of these challenges and how to minister to those affected by them. This ministering is done through building bridges of love, empathy, and trust regardless of whether or not someone retains their belief or continues to participate. Author David B. Ostler, a former mission president, utilizes surveys with local leaders and disaffected members, research from social science and religious studies, and teachings from Church leaders to show how Latter-day Saints can work to better support those who have questions and create church environments where all can feel welcome.
