Book excerpt: God Wants to Help You Overcome Your Greatest Battle of All What we think and believe determines who we are. If that’s so, then why are we so insecure, defensive, lonely, empty, fearful, depressed, self-absorbed, dysfunctional, angry and confused? We are a mess. But that’s not what God has in mind for us. In fact, the Master has hope, strength, beauty, joy, love, creativity, freedom, power, peace, patience, goodness, laughter, organization, effectiveness and purpose for us. So, what went wrong? We lost our identity in our sin. We’ve become unanchored, tossed about on the sea of a million influences, none of which is our Master’s heart or mind. Between the world, the flesh and the devil, we don’t know what to think and therefore our lives are filled with hurt, pain and regret. Someone is running the show in our minds and it’s not us, at least not the real us, nor the real owner. Jesus is not okay with this. He died to save us from our sins and set us free. He made a way for our souls to be rescued from our enemies. He bought the territory of our minds and planted His flag of holy ground. It’s time for us to get angry enough to take back control of our minds, to master them and bring them back in alignment with the Master’s will. It’s time to return to The Master’s Mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the body, mind and soul to answer the question: What exactly is a human being? Modern research is uncovering more and more detail of what our brain is and how it works. We are living, thinking creatures who carry around with us an amazing organic supercomputer in our heads. But what is the relationship between our brains and our minds-and ultimately our sense of identity as a person? Are we more than machines? Is free-will an illusion? Do we have a soul? Brain Imaging Scientist Sharon Dirckx lays out the current understanding of who we are from biologists, philosophers, theologians and psychologists, and points towards a bigger picture that suggests answers to the fundamental questions of our existence. Not just "What am I?", but "Who am I?"-and "Why am I?" Read this book to gain valuable insight into what modern research is telling us about ourselves, or to give a sceptical friend to challenge the idea that we are merely material beings living in a material world.

Book Journey of the Mind How Thinking Emerged from Chaos

Download or read book Journey of the Mind How Thinking Emerged from Chaos written by Ogi Ogas and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two neuroscientists reveal why consciousness exists and how it works by examining eighteen increasingly intelligent minds, from microbes to humankind—and beyond. Why do you exist? How did atoms and molecules transform into sentient creatures that experience longing, regret, compassion, and even marvel at their own existence? What does it truly mean to have a mind—to think? Science has offered few answers to these existential questions until now. Journey of the Mind is the first book to offer a unified account of the mind that explains how consciousness, language, self-awareness, and civilization arose incrementally out of chaos. The journey begins three billion years ago with the emergence of the universe’s simplest possible mind. From there, the book explores the nanoscopic archaeon, whose thinking machinery consists of a handful of molecules, then advances through amoebas, worms, frogs, birds, monkeys, and humans, explaining what each “new” mind could do that previous minds could not. Though they admire the triumph of human consciousness, Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam argue that humans are hardly the most sophisticated minds on the planet. The same physical principles that produce human self-awareness are leading cities and nation-states to develop “superminds,” and perhaps planting the seeds for even higher forms of consciousness. Written in lively, accessible language accompanied by vivid illustrations, Journey of the Mind is a mind-bending work of popular science, the first general book to share the cutting-edge mathematical basis for consciousness, language, and the self. It shows how a “unified theory of the mind” can explain the mind’s greatest mysteries—and offer clues about the ultimate fate of all minds in the universe.

Book Mind Your Thoughts

Download or read book Mind Your Thoughts written by Glenn Wolkoff and published by . This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mind Your Thoughts is a book that will help you quiet and focus your thoughts so you speak directly to your unconscious state of being in a language the mind understands. Meditation is nothing more than relaxation, and in a meditative state, your conscious can relax and allow you to speak directly to the unconscious. The unconscious is in charge of your life, even though you allow your conscious to be in control. If you want to experience change in your life, you need to learn to bypass the conscious control which can be described as critical, analytical, and most of all judgmental. Meditating through relaxation is how you reprogram your unconscious with new concepts and information. The unconscious learns by applying this information against the storage of all your memories, experiences, reactions, and emotions. Also, the unconscious is much more accepting of change because it processes information without judgment. You will see both mental and physical changes resulting from this process. Practice with the thoughts in this book; your unconscious will understand even if your conscious seems confused. Mind your thoughts and experience a human metamorphosis from the inside out. The purpose of meditation is to quiet the mind. Meditation removes the clutter of thoughts from everyday life, and also helps you to get in touch with your higher consciousness. It does take practice, so do not become discouraged. Set aside 45 minutes each evening before you go to sleep. Sit in a quiet room, in a comfortable and relaxed position wearing loose clothing. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose and let it out slowly through your mouth. With each breath in, clear your mind of all thoughts, and feel your body relax. Repeat this 9 times before beginning. This book contains 81 thoughts for you to meditate on. There are 9 sets of 9 thoughts each. Start with Set One and allow 5 minutes of meditation for each thought. After your initial warm up of 9 deep breaths, read the first thought of the first set. Close your eyes and continue your deep breathing as you reflect on the thought and what it may mean to you and your life. Think of nothing else. Repeat this with each thought until you complete Set One. It will take you at least 9 evenings to get through all of the sets in the book. You may want to repeat a set over and over again before moving on to the next set. Eventually, you will have your favorite thoughts that you will want to dedicate your meditations on. Most people enjoy thoughts of wisdom, but rarely take the time to internalize them enough to be life changing. Practice mindfulness in life and create ripples that will forever change your life. This is not an instructional book on the art of meditation.

Book Simple Sayings and Thoughts for the Mind Heart and Soul

Download or read book Simple Sayings and Thoughts for the Mind Heart and Soul written by Joe Cervantes and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are similar to finding a treasure chest full of diamonds and nuggets of gold. How can anyone not take advantage of such an abundance of wealth? In the midst of so much confusion, one needs to take the time to believe that there is wealth in the word of God and from his people to overcome such daily adversaries. We are challenged in our everyday lives, but may you take that first step of faith living for God and in helping others with love where there is failure. I know many books have been written with different opinions and advice by different writers about God and life. As the author of this book, Ive tried to give some simple wisdom and understanding in so many areas of our lives, making it simple to understandand, of course, with some sense of humor. As one who goes alone through the maze of life, sometimes it requires us to learn quickly in order to find the key to the cross. So where advice isnt available, we are tempted, get off course, and learn the hard way, which gets more complicated if we become stubborn. Just like the whole armor of God protects every part of our spiritual and physical bodies, taking some good advice and motivation will help us progress as a child of God. For those who love to make things possible by taking advice, may this book help you to change your route and save you time. There are over six thousand thoughts of my personal sayings, which can be used as a text starter for a sermon or a conservation piece for inspiration. Please enjoy them; youve struck it rich with some great wisdom.Joe Cervantes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you find yourself lying awake at night, ruminating about the events of the day? Do you toss and turn, worrying about what you have to do in the morning or what you did earlier in the day? If so, you are not alone. In fact, insomnia is the most common sleep disorder faced by the general population today. The most common complaint in those who have trouble sleeping is having a “noisy mind.” Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it seems like you cannot silence all the internal dialogue. So what do you do when your mind is spinning and your thoughts just won’t stop? Accessible, enjoyable, and grounded in evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Goodnight Mind directly addresses the effects of rumination—or having an overactive brain—on your ability to sleep well. Written by two psychologists who specialize in sleep disorders, the book contains helpful exercises and insights into how you can better manage your thoughts at bedtime, and finally get some sleep. Traditional treatment for insomnia is usually focused on medications that promote sedation rather than on the behavioral causes of insomnia. Unfortunately, medication can often lead to addiction, and a host of other side effects. This is a great book for anyone who is looking for effective therapy to treat insomnia without the use of medication. This informative, small-format book is easy-to-read and lightweight, making it perfect for late-night reading.

  • Author : Philip Ball
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

  • ISBN : 0226822044

Download or read book The Book of Minds written by Philip Ball and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular science writer Philip Ball explores a range of sciences to map our answers to a huge, philosophically rich question: How do we even begin to think about minds that are not human? Sciences from zoology to astrobiology, computer science to neuroscience, are seeking to understand minds in their own distinct disciplinary realms. Taking a uniquely broad view of minds and where to find them—including in plants, aliens, and God—Philip Ball pulls the pieces together to explore what sorts of minds we might expect to find in the universe. In so doing, he offers for the first time a unified way of thinking about what minds are and what they can do, by locating them in what he calls the “space of possible minds.” By identifying and mapping out properties of mind without prioritizing the human, Ball sheds new light on a host of fascinating questions: What moral rights should we afford animals, and can we understand their thoughts? Should we worry that AI is going to take over society? If there are intelligent aliens out there, how could we communicate with them? Should we? Understanding the space of possible minds also reveals ways of making advances in understanding some of the most challenging questions in contemporary science: What is thought? What is consciousness? And what (if anything) is free will? Informed by conversations with leading researchers, Ball’s brilliant survey of current views about the nature and existence of minds is more mind-expanding than we could imagine. In this fascinating panorama of other minds, we come to better know our own.
