Book excerpt: JANUARY 4 FEBRUARY 10 MARCH 16 APRIL 22 MAY 28 JUNE 34 JULY 40 AUGUST 46 SEPTEMBER 52 OCTOBER 58 NOVEMBER 65 DECEMBER 71 January 1 THERE are two guarantees of a wise rule of conduct: the thought before action, and self-command afterward.-ST. IGNATIUS. 2 When we receive with an entire and perfect resignation the afflictions which God sends us they become for us favors and benefits; because conformity to the will of God is a gain far superior to all temporal advantages.-ST. VINCENT DE PAUL. 3 All perfection consists in the love of God; and the perfection of divine love consists in the union of our will with that of God.-ST. ALPHONSUS. 4 Leave to every one the care of what belongs to him, and disturb not thyself with what is said or done in the world.-ST. THOMAS AQUINAS. 5 Place before your eyes as models for imitation, not the weak and cowardly, but the fervent and courageous.-ST. IGNATIUS. 6 Prayer is a pasturage, a field, wherein all the virtues find their nourishment, growth, and strength.-ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA. 7 A single act of resignation to the divine will in what it ordains contrary to our desires, is of more value than a hundred thousand successes conformable to our will and taste.-ST. VINCENT DE PAUL. 8 The shortest, yea, the only way to reach sanctity, is to conceive a horror for all that the world loves and values.-ST. IGNATIUS. 9 As long as we are in this mortal life, nothing is more necessary for us than humility.-ST. TERESA. 10 Learning without humility has always been pernicious to the Church; and as pride precipitated the rebellious angels from heaven, it frequently causes the loss of learned men.-ST. VINCENT DE PAUL. 11 Why remain sad and idle? Why exhaust thyself in the anguish of melancholy? Have courage, do violence to thyself; meditate on the passion of Jesus Christ, and thou shalt overcome thy sorrow.-BL. HENRY SUSO. 12 Here is the difference between the joys of the world and the cross of Jesus Christ: after having tasted the first, one is disgusted with them; and on the contrary, the more one partakes of the cross, the greater the thirst for it.-ST. IGNATIUS. 13 When the sky is free from clouds we can see more clearly the brightness of the sun. In like manner, when the soul is free from sin and the gloom of passion, it participates in the divine light.-VEN. LOUIS DE GRANADA. 14 Our works are of no value if they be not united to the merits of Jesus Christ.-ST. TERESA. 15 If we are very determined to mortify ourselves and not to be too much occupied with our corporal health, we will soon, by the grace of God, become masters of our bodies.-ST. TERESA. 16 In every creature, however small it be, we may see a striking image of divine wisdom, power, and goodness.-VEN. BARTHOLOMEW OF MARTYRS. 17 Time is but a period. It passes like the lightning flash. Suffering passes with time; suffering, then, is very short.-BL. HENRY SUSO. 18 In order to bear our afflictions with patience, it is very useful to read the lives and legends of the saints who endured great torments for Jesus Christ.-ST. TERESA.

Book On the Literature and Thought of the German Classical Era

Download or read book On the Literature and Thought of the German Classical Era written by Hugh Barr Nisbet and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a valuable contribution to our knowledge of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century intellectual life inside and outside Germany. —Prof. Karl S. Guthke, Harvard University This elegant collection of essays ranges across eighteenth and nineteenth-century thought, covering philosophy, science, literature and religion in the ‘Age of Goethe.’ A recognised authority in the field, Nisbet grapples with the major voices of the Enlightenment and gives pride of place to the figures of Lessing, Herder, Goethe and Schiller. These eleven essays range widely in their compass of thought and intellectual discourse, dealing incisively with themes including the philosophical implications of literature and the relationship between religion, science and politics. The result is an accomplished reflection on German thought, but also on its rebirth, as Nisbet argues for the relevance of these Enlightenment thinkers for the readers of today. The first half of this collection focuses predominantly on eighteenth-century thought, where names like Lessing, Goethe and Herder, but also Locke and Voltaire, feature. The second has a wider chronological scope, discussing authors such as Winckelmann and Schiller, while branching out from discussions of religion, philosophy and literature to explore the sciences. Issues of biology, early environmentalism, and natural history also form part of this volume. The collection concludes with an examination of changing attitudes towards art in the aftermath of the ‘Age of Goethe.’ The essays in this volume have been previously published separately, but are brought together in this collection to present Nisbet’s widely-acclaimed perspectives on this fascinating period of German thought. It will be of interest to scholars and students of the intellectual life of Europe during the Enlightenment, while its engaging and lucid style will also appeal to the general reader.

Book excerpt: This volume explores higher level, critical, and creative thinking, as well as reflective decision making and problem solving -- what teachers should emphasize when teaching literacy across the curriculum. Focusing on how to encourage learners to become independent thinking, learning, and communicating participants in home, school, and community environments, this book is concerned with integrated learning in a curriculum of inclusion. It emphasizes how to provide a curriculum for students where they are socially interactive, personally reflective, and academically informed. Contributors are authorities on such topics as cognition and learning, classroom climates, knowledge bases of the curriculum, the use of technology, strategic reading and learning, imagery and analogy as a source of creative thinking, the nature of motivation, the affective domain in learning, cognitive apprenticeships, conceptual development across the disciplines, thinking through the use of literature, the impact of the media on thinking, the nature of the new classroom, developing the ability to read words, the bilingual, multicultural learner, crosscultural literacy, and reaching the special learner. The applications of higher level thought to classroom contexts and materials are provided, so that experienced teacher educators, and psychologists are able to implement some of the abstractions that are frequently dealt with in texts on cognition. Theoretical constructs are grounded in educational experience, giving the volume a practical dimension. Finally, appropriate concerns regarding the new media, hypertext, bilingualism, and multiculturalism as they reflect variation in cognitive experience within the contexts of learning are presented.

Book excerpt: God's word stretches as a parapet from the eternal past across the present into eternity. Christ has journeyed between the times. In His word He instructs and by His spirit He guides us into the age to come. Beyond space and time, well above the realms of human language and thinking, God speaks, and what He says, none can annul! The word of God is so meaningfully structured and arranged such that one cannot add, subtract or change one verse, one word, one chapter or book without impairing on the harmony and meaning of the whole. By the word our hearts are assayed, our deeds are graded and words are judged. The underlining structure, forms and functions of the universe are based on the word of God - the eternal emblem, crest and seal on all creation. Everything is controlled from the centre, the scientist calls it the nucleus but I call it the word - the centre and source of all life. The Holy Spirit is the glue that holds the bits and pieces of the scriptures together, if we neglect Him the scriptures will fall apart. The Christian is limited not by his physical abilities or lack of it but by his spiritual insights and revelations, his knowledge of God's word and will. Never look down to test the ground before obeying the voice of God, if you are willing to take the risk, God will confirm His word with great testimonies. Each verse, each chapter and book of the bible is a complete whole yet a part in a larger whole and must be interpreted inline with the larger whole- the Bible. Never allow yourself to become a slave to the tyrants, the errand sons of hell. Use the sword of the spirit- the word of life.

Book Wrestling the Angel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Terryl L. Givens
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-10-03
  • ISBN : 0199394245
  • Pages : 423 pages

Download or read book Wrestling the Angel written by Terryl L. Givens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first volume of his magisterial study of the foundations of Mormon thought and practice, Terryl L. Givens offers a sweeping account of Mormon belief from its founding to the present day. Situating the relatively new movement in the context of the Christian tradition, he reveals that Mormonism continues to change and grow. Givens shows that despite Mormonism's origins in a biblical culture strongly influenced by nineteenth-century Restorationist thought, which advocated a return to the Christianity of the early Church, the new movement diverges radically from the Christianity of the creeds. Mormonism proposes its own cosmology and metaphysics, in which human identity is rooted in a premortal world as eternal as God. Mormons view mortal life as an enlightening ascent rather than a catastrophic fall, and reject traditional Christian concepts of human depravity and destiny. Popular fascination with Mormonism's social innovations, such as polygamy and communalism, and its supernatural and esoteric elements-angels, gold plates, seer stones, a New World Garden of Eden, and sacred undergarments-have long overshadowed the fact that it is the most enduring and even thriving product of the nineteenth century's religious upheavals and innovations. Wrestling the Angel traces the essential contours of Mormon thought from the time of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young to the contemporary LDS church, illuminating both the seminal influence of the founding generation of Mormon thinkers and the significant developments in the church over almost 200 years. The most comprehensive account of the development of Mormon thought ever written, Wrestling the Angel will be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the Mormon faith.
