Book The Antarean Odyssey

  • Pages : 462 pages

Download or read book The Antarean Odyssey written by Inge Blanton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Sargon, Captain of the Antares, whom the prophet at my birth named the Even-Star of the House of the Descending Falcon, and the rising Morning Star of his people. What a confusing name to give to a small child. Now that I am at the end of my days, I think I can finally decipher the contradiction. I was heralded as the hope of the Astari, my people. The soothsayer told my great-grandfather, the last hope. This was the reason for the name Even-star. But, it was not to be. I'm also the last heir to the throne of Istranavu, my world. The assassination of the Emperor and my banishment was apparently the death-knell of my people. The Antares, my second home, will soon translate into the arms of Incal, the sun of my world. I have chosen death than have this ship used for their foul play, I will destroy the Antares. This is the end, the end of the joy and sorrows of a life I never in my wildest dreams could have envisioned. I was born two hundred years ago into the House of the Descending Falcon. My family was ancient even by the standards of my world. Both my parents were scientists. I think I inherited my inquisitiveness from them. Sirtis, my mother, was the granddaughter of the emperor which placed me high on the social and political ladder. When a civilization becomes ancient, it has the tendency to look back to a golden age. Everything hoary acquires a golden glow as Sabrina would have said. But there, I'm getting ahead of myself, so, I'd better start at the beginning.

Book Battle for the Soul

Download or read book Battle for the Soul written by Edward-Isaac Dovere and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning political journalist for The Atlantic tells the inside story of how the embattled Democratic Party, seeking a direction for its future during the Trump years, successfully regained the White House. The 2020 presidential campaign was a defining moment for America. As Donald Trump and his nativist populism cowed the Republican Party into submission, many Democrats—haunted by Hillary Clinton’s shocking loss in 2016 and the resulting four-year-long identity crisis—were convinced that he would be unbeatable. Their party and the country, it seemed, might never recover. How, then, did Democrats manage to win the presidency, especially after the longest primary race with the biggest field ever? How did they keep themselves united through an internal struggle between newly empowered progressives and establishment forces—playing out against a pandemic, an economic crisis, and a new racial reckoning? Edward-Isaac Dovere’s Battle for the Soul is the searing, fly-on-the-wall account of the Democrats’ journey through recalibration and rebirth. Dovere traces this process: from the early days in the wilderness of the post-Obama era to the jockeying of potential candidates; from the backroom battles and exhausting campaigns to the unlikely triumph of the man few expected to win; and on through the inauguration and the insurrection at the Capitol. Dovere draws on years of on-the-ground reporting and contemporaneous conversations with the key players—whether with Pete Buttigieg in his hotel suite in Des Moines an hour before he won the Iowa caucuses or with Joe Biden in his first-ever interview in the Oval Office—as well as with aides, advisors, and voters. Offering unparalleled access and an insider’s command of the campaign, Battle for the Soul takes a compelling look at the policies, politics, and people, as well as the often absurd process of running for president. This fresh and timely story brings you on the trail, into the private rooms, and along to eavesdrop on critical conversations. You will never see campaigns or this turning point in our history the same way again.

Book I Can Be Myself When Everyone I Know Is Dead

Download or read book I Can Be Myself When Everyone I Know Is Dead written by Kamila Mlynarczyk and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I can be myself when everyone I know is dead... That's the title of the thing I made. The thing that I made is a book. It houses a collection of my art (some from online and some not) created from 2017 - 2019. The writing delves uncomfortably into my mind and life. It describes the rhyme and reason behind why everyone needs a little snail friend, why cute poops make this world a better place, and why werewolves always hesitate before devouring the sacrificial girl-child. Actually, it's really about how horribly influential and affecting childhood is and how babcia's soup is actually her life-blood. No, no, it's more about how Audri is planning to take over the world. It's probably about too many things for one book, which means it's really all about breaking the rules. There are no rules in art, so there are no rules in my book, hence the title: I can be myself when everyone I know is dead... which is much too long to be usefully searchable. Eye of Newt Books wants to let you know that someone in this process took it seriously, tried to follow the rules, and is going to make it a nice artbook that will have you laughing, crying, and cringing by the end. That is...if you read it from cover to cover (which I don't recommend because that would be following the "rules").

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invited to America for the first time, an unknown visitor from a small South Pacific island faces a panel of distinguished scientists, doctors, educators, and industry leaders in a televised political event. He is prepared to engage in dialogue with the hope of gleaning knowledge and enlightenment. What transpires over the course of a single day in this port city not only enlightens a middle-aged man and a young woman searching for a purpose, but educates a group of self-interested professionals, and uplifts an entire community. It also imparts wisdom that can transform the world. In the early years of the twentieth century, Kahlil Gibran, Lebanese-American poet, philosopher, and artist, published The Prophet. This visionary work was celebrated for its powerful insights into human emotion expressed through an epic poem. The protagonist in this work spoke with unearthly wisdom of a fictional people, the Orphalese. The Prophet remains a treasure for peoples throughout the world, translated, referenced, and quoted for nearly a century. Having slipped into obscurity for nearly a century after vanishing into the sea, it would be just like Kahlil Gibran’s Prophet to return in a dream to advise modern day society. It is within this context that Kamila’s Son was written.

Download or read book Intimate Letters written by Leos Janácek and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the letters of a great love story. In 1917, the Czech composer Leos Janáçek met Kamila Stösslová while on holiday at Luhaçovice, a spa resort in Moravia. He was sixty-three and locked in a loveless marriage; she was twenty-six, the wife of an antique dealer frequently away from home. After the holiday, Janáçek began writing to Stösslová. Undeterred by her lack of interest in his work and her spasmodic replies, he continued to send her letters until his death eleven years later. An extraordinarily self-revealing portrait emerges of an isolated artist at the height of his creative powers and the beginning of his international fame. It is also a portrait of a lonely man who, as the years went by, came to fantasize about Stösslová as his true "wife"--the inspiration for many of the works of his old age. Most of these letters were suppressed until changing conditions in Czechoslovakia allowed their full publication in 1990. John Tyrrell has edited and translated a comprehensive selection, concentrating on the almost daily letters of the final eighteen months. Supported by a diary of meetings between Janáçek and Stösslová, a decoding of the erotic references in the letters, and a selection of mostly unknown photographs, this remarkable book breathes life into the story one of the greatest of operatic composers and provides vital clues to the nature of his creative genius. Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Exuberant, knowingly exotic and deceptively serious' - Guardian 'Kamila Shamsie has created a rich, bright world' - Times Literary Supplement _______________ BY THE ACCLAIMED WINNER OF THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION The Dard-e-Dils are characterised by their prominent clavicles and love of stories. Aliya may not have inherited her family's patrician looks, but she is prey to their legends that stretch back to the days of Timur Lang. There is a sting to most of these tales, for the Dard-e-Dils consider themselves cursed by their 'not-quite' twins. Amidst her growing attraction to a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, Aliya begins to believe that she is another 'not-quite' twin, linked to her scandalous aunt Mariam in a way that hardly bodes well... _______________ 'A funny, clever and romantic story' - Barbara Trapido 'The stories within the stories describe Pakistani society, its peoples and its mores, better than anything that has come from the Other Side for a long time.
