Thoughtful Expressions explores a variety of phenomena that all of us ponder while engaging with the rigors and blessings of everyday life. Reflecting on topics from the nature of the soul to the corrupting influence of power to the promise of salvation, William Johnson invites us to examine our own experiences through a different lens than we're accustomed to. Every step of our journey is a gift. What happens to our outlook when the road becomes rocky depends on whether we can maintain a sense of gratitude. With wisdom and humor, Johnson's thought-provoking essays encourage us to roll with the punches and see the good in all things.

Book excerpt: My selection of poetry writings consist of a series of journeys—i.e. spiritual, philosophical—and my youth experiences from my home in South Carolina. Since humans are spiritual beings made in the image of our Creator, whom we refer to as Allah (SWA), my poems will attempt to give the reader a better understanding of one’s purpose on this beautiful earth, which Allah has given for all of us to enjoy its wondrous splendor. As I reflect on this book, one poem come to mind, entitled “Word Is the Sword.” “Word” is in “sword,” which in the subconscious tells us the power of words and also reflects knowledge and understanding of life each day. It is my goal, as I pray, that these many uses of words that you are about to read in my poems will open your understanding and help to create a better you. The power of words. Enjoy the book.

Book excerpt: Williamsji Maveli’s poetic analysis is a deep expression of the noblest human emotions: of love and sympathy, of awareness of the infinite value of life, of the realizations of the eternal truth through the strokes of individual talents of creativity. Poetry focuses on the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm. Imagination is the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful and be active without worries; every word has its own meaning, detached from the actual word it’s described by. Poetry achieves a different level of understanding by allowing us to really experience life through the emotions and experiences of others; it is a blend of imagination and truth. Poetry is the art of apprehending and interpreting ideas by the faculty of imagination; the art of idealizing in thought and in expression. Poetry is all those put together in a single volume of human brilliance! And a poet’s life and analytical studies belongs to the future as well as the present. A true poet lives not only in his contemporary time but also in the time of the future with his cultural heritage projecting the eternal essence of human sympathy and consciousness.

Book Radio Nation

  • Author : Joy Elizabeth Hayes

Download or read book Radio Nation written by Joy Elizabeth Hayes and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of mass communication in nation building has often been underestimated, particularly in the case of Mexico. Following the Revolution, the Mexican government used the new medium of radio to promote national identity and build support for the new regime. Joy Hayes now tells how an emerging country became a radio nation. This groundbreaking book investigates the intersection of radio broadcasting and nation building. Hayes tells how both government-controlled and private radio stations produced programs of distinctly Mexican folk and popular music as a means of drawing the country's regions together and countering the influence of U.S. broadcasts. Hayes describes how, both during and after the period of cultural revolution, Mexican radio broadcasting was shaped by the clash and collaboration of different social forces--including U.S. interests, Mexican media entrepreneurs, state institutions, and radio audiences. She traces the evolution of Mexican radio in case studies that focus on such subjects as early government broadcasting activities, the role of Mexico City media elites, the "paternal voice" of presidential addresses, and U.S. propaganda during World War II. More than narrative history, Hayes's study provides an analytical framework for understanding the role of radio in building Mexican nationalism at a critical time in that nation's history. Radio Nation expands our appreciation of an overlooked medium that changed the course of an entire country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching in the southern African nation of Botswana in the early 1980s, Richard Christensen faced a new world, one endlessly fascinating and challenging. Experiencing warm hospitality from many people, sharing both joyful celebrations and painful struggles with students, he and his family encountered a deeper sense of the true meaning of community. Travel in apartheid South Africa and war-weary Zimbabwe gave him a fuller understanding of the reality of oppression and how people of faith endured their plight and kept hope alive. In this experience, so surprising in many ways, he came to a deepened realization of the genuine freedom of the gospel and the hope it affords us. He saw that relationships are what save us, that the salvation of God in Christ is not merely personal and individual, but communal, and that we are thus more dependent upon one another than we realize. Learning to see the world with new eyes, he discovered not only a more expansive vision of the church and the world, but also a more honest and complete understanding of himself as a product of an affluent and segregated society.
