Book Introducing English Grammar

Download or read book Introducing English Grammar written by Kersti Börjars and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing English Grammar introduces readers to the methodology and terminology needed to analyse English sentences. The approach taken is in line with current research in grammar, a particular advantage for students who may go on to study syntax in more depth. All the examples and exercises use real language taken from both standard and non-standard geographical areas and dialects, and include excerpts from Australian and British newspaper articles. Students are encouraged to think about the terminology as a tool kit for studying language and to test what can and cannot be described using these tools. This new edition has been fully updated and features: an expanded introduction; new texts and exercises that include data from social media; revised material on 'Grammar at work' and 'English worldwide'; more suggestions for further reading at the end of the book; updated online resources with extensive further reading and answers to the exercises, which can be found at https://www.routledge.com/9781138635319. Written for readers with no previous experience of grammatical analysis, Introducing English Grammar is suited to anyone beginning a study of linguistics, English language or speech pathology, as well as to students whose interests are primarily literary but who need a better understanding of the structure of English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago I came across a marvelous little paper in which Hector-Neri Castaneda shows that standard versions of act utilitarian l ism are formally incoherent. I was intrigued by his argument. It had long seemed to me that I had a firm grasp on act utilitarianism. Indeed, it had often seemed to me that it was the clearest and most attractive of normative theories. Yet here was a simple and relatively uncontrover sial argument that showed, with only some trivial assumptions, that the doctrine is virtually unintelligible. The gist of Castaneda's argument is this: suppose we understand act utilitarianism to be the view that an act is obligatory if and only if its utility exceeds that of each alternative. Suppose it is obligatory for a certain person to perform an act with two parts - we can call it 'A & B'. Then, obviously enough, it is also obligatory for this person to perform the parts, A and B. If act utilitarianism were true, we appar ently could infer that the utility of A & B is higher than that of A, and higher than that of B (because A & B is obligatory, and the other acts are alternatives to A & B).

Book excerpt: In this superb new addition to Val McDermid’s masterful crime series, DCI Karen Pirie returns in a propulsive thriller of deceit and vengeance, set against the disquiet of a global pandemic Britain’s reigning “Queen of Crime” (The Scotsman), Val McDermid is the award-winning, internationally bestselling author of over thirty novels. The long-awaited seventh novel in the acclaimed series that has captivated audiences for twenty years, both on the page and now in the Edgar Award–nominated ITV/BritBox show, Past Lying is a full tilt novel of ego, retribution, deceit, and just how far one will go to settle the score. It’s April 2020 and Edinburgh is in lockdown. It would seem like a strange time for a cold case to go hot—the streets all but empty, an hour’s outdoor exercise the maximum allowed—but a mere pandemic doesn’t mean crime takes a holiday. When a source at the National Library contacts DCI Karen Pirie’s team about documents in the archive of a recently deceased crime novelist, it seems it’s game on again. At the center of it, a novel: two crime novelists facing off over a chessboard. But it quickly emerges that their real-life competition is drawing blood. What unspools is a twisted game of betrayal and revenge, and as Karen and her team attempt to disentangle fact from fiction, it becomes clear that their investigation is more complicated than they ever imagined. A tense, atmospheric page-turner, Past Lying reaffirms McDermid as one of the most talented crime writers of her generation.

The victim was a charismatic college professor and fierce feminist, and soon the women are infiltrating her social and academic circles to collect clues. Book The Complete Works of C H Spurgeon Volume 83

Download or read book The Complete Works of C H Spurgeon Volume 83 written by Spurgeon, Charles and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 827 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 83- The Sword and the Trowel, Volume 4 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.

Book A Spiritual Journey to Unwavering Faith

Download or read book A Spiritual Journey to Unwavering Faith written by Dave Scelba and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost everyone at some point in their lives questions their faith and/or belief in God. Even the most learned religious scholars, ordained and lay readers and faith-based teachers admit to having doubt at times. The author wrestled with faith and a belief in God for many years but feels blessed to have experienced a series of life-changing events that opened his eyes, heart, and mind. Today he has absolutely no doubt in the existence of God and that there is an afterlife. A Spiritual Journey to Unwavering Faith is a multi-denominational and multi-dimensional book written for every reader regardless of their religious backgrounds or spiritual beliefs. It details the writer’s unique experiences, and the purpose in sharing his spiritual journey is to give those with doubt, a sense of comfort, peace, and hope. It also provides confirmation and inspiration to those who already have faith, and to hopefully strengthen their existing belief. The author’s spiritual journey began about a year before the passing of his father-in-law and continued to grow and become stronger with the passing of his father and mother. Each died in the author’s arms and as they took their last breaths, he asked them to please give him a sign or do whatever they could to confirm the existence of God and the afterlife. Literally moments after they each passed and many times since, each communicated with the author and provided profound signs that were personal connections known only between themselves. Initially the author viewed these After Death Communication (ADC) signs as sheer coincidences, but after experiencing a series of unique, strange, unexplainable encounters the writer finally realized he was witnessing events that went beyond the obvious or what could be identified by using his five key senses. Once he accepted the possibly a higher power was at work, he allowed his eyes, heart, and mind to be opened to a whole new world or realm. He also discovered the incredible power of prayer. During his research and the discovery process the author read many books that included historical mythology, afterlife experiences, spiritual enlightenment, faith, the Old and New Testaments of several different Bible translations, excerpts of the Koran, Divine interventions, and devotionals written by lay persons from around the world. He especially enjoyed reading devotionals from people of all walks of life who told their stories through essays that connected to specific scripture. Their personal experiences relating to selected scripture were genuine, insightful and deeply moving. The author found it interesting how philosophies and life recommendations quoted in so many modern day spiritual and self-help books and materials are rooted in scripture. As the author connected his own personal events to specific scriptures, he realized everything he was searching for was already compiled in one comprehensive best-selling book of all time … the Bible.
