Book Red High Heels in Heaven

Download or read book Red High Heels in Heaven written by Deanna Hill and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the way to Nebraska in 1986 my life was changed forever in the blink of an eye when the tour bus on which I was traveling slammed into an 18-wheel tanker. After the accident and during my recovery my sister was keeping a journal, which she told me was to help me write my book. From time to time through the years I thought about that book, especially when I would share my story at churches or one-on-one and people would say, "You need to write a book" However, my second thought would always be, "Who would ever want to read about me" and I would shove the idea back to the corner of my mind where it had been hanging out for years. Finally a few years ago after being introduced to a word processor, I sat down and began to write my story. The computer made the writing part easy enough, but telling the story was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It took weeks and weeks of reading and rereading my sister's journal and digging up memories deeply buried, which were painful to review. I won't say it was exactly a labor of love, but I am glad I finally did it. It is my prayer that people will be encouraged and inspired by reading how God has brought me through it all. If I seem courageous or special in any way it is because of Him.

Book excerpt: Best Fifteen Books of March 2019, Refinery29 Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Fetishized, demonized, celebrated, and outlawed, the high heel is central to the iconography of modern womanhood. But are high heels good? Are they feminist? What does it mean for a woman (or, for that matter, a man) to choose to wear them? Meditating on the labyrinthine nature of sexual identity and the performance of gender, High Heel moves from film to fairytale, from foot binding to feminism, and from the golden ratio to glam rock. Summer Brennan considers this most provocative of fashion accessories as a nexus of desire and struggle, sex and society, violence and self expression, setting out to understand what it means to be a woman by walking a few hundred years in her shoes. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Book Growing Up with Prayer Love and the Red Dirt Road

Download or read book Growing Up with Prayer Love and the Red Dirt Road written by Cheryl Moffett and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I slowly raised my hand when the visiting pastor asked who wants change in their life. He looked at me and told me, "I have nothing for you, you need to write, just write. Your story needs to be heard." We were barely hitting top speed, flying down the hill, and the sound that blasted through the trees and above the pebbles scared us all. It was the blast of a horn from a log truck. This bellowing booming sound meant get out of the way! Our laughter turned into fear as we all turned back to see a large empty log truck barreling at us. Growing up in the heart of the deep East Texas woods with three channels on TV, we could not help but take our adventures outside. These stories will take you down the red dirt road we called home. We raced log trucks in a makeshift buggy, nearly burnt down Granny's house, danced in her shoes, created clubhouses out of anything not tied down, plus so many more. Looking back at these adventures, we laugh and wonder how we made it without broken bones or, worse, mishaps. We made it with prayer and a family's love for God and us. With each adventure you read, you will find a lesson learned I discovered along the way forty plus years later as I have grown into my faith. It's been there all along, all I needed was to slow down and be still.

While working on a film set, he is contacted by a U.S. Senator who offers him a deal to go to Myanmar and offer a powerful drug lord millions of dollars to burn the year's opium crop. Danny's team ventures into Myanmar as a film crew to present the proposal. The project itself is dangerous, and it also has become a thorn in the side of the U.S. drug agencies. Both the CIA and DEA have concerns that the project could expose their culpability in the growth of drug trafficking due to their activities in arming the population during the Vietnam conflict. The team stealthily embarks on their journey. The government agencies, however, are following their every move to make sure the Senator's objective is never completed. If they succeed, they could destroy one-fifth of the heroin in the world's market. If they fail, they could all be destroyed.

She finds refuge in a small Baja hotel on the edge of the sea to which she returns each winter to continue the healing of her heart. But this year’s stay would be different. When a scruffy Englishman with a posh accent offers to buy the painting she’s working on, everything changes, and Sandra finds herself torn between her hard-won serenity and her draw to a compelling but risky alternative. Mark Jeffery’s film career is in decline, his ex-wife’s behaviour has landed him in the tabloids, and he’s got nothing better to do than hang out in Mexico waiting for the phone to ring. When he meets a woman painting a seascape on the roof of his friend’s hotel, he discovers a “not terribly exciting but predictable and rather refreshing” distraction from his troubled life. As Mark spends more time with her, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to this ordinary woman. With the magical waters of the Sea of Cortez as its backdrop, House of the Blue Sea tells a tale of surviving loss, seeing the extraordinary, and finding happiness in unexpected places.

Book Killer Heels

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Killer Heels written by Lisa Small and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Killer Heels explores the rich cultural history of the high heel and its relation to power, fantasy, sexuality and identity. More than 160 spectacular contemporary and historical shoe designs - from sixteenth-century Venetian platforms to twenty-first-century Christian Louboutins - are presented around six themes: Revival and Reinterpretation, Rising in the East, Glamour and Transgression, Architecture, Metamorphosis and Space Walk. Going beyond the archetypal forms of stiletto, wedge and platform, these extraordinary designs play with the cultural and artistic possibilities of the high heel, use innovative or unexpected materials and push the limits of functionality, wear ability and beauty. Complementing the shoes are stills, sketches and artist statements for six films specially commissioned for the exhibition from Ghada Amer and Reza Farkhondeh, Zach Gold, Steven Klein, Nick Knight, Marilyn Minter and Rashaad Newsome that explore a range of provocative themes and demonstrate the power of the high heel in the collective imagination. In addition, several of the designers included in the exhibition (including Brian Atwood, Zaha Hadid, Pierre Hardy and Christian Louboutin), along with Elizabeth Semmelhack, Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum, contribute thoughts on topics such as their inspiration and design process and the cultural significance of high heels. Beautiful, informative and just plain fun, this collection of killer heels is filled with stunning photos and fashion lore.
