Book excerpt: A study of the problem of Soren Kierkegaard's (1813-1855) "indirect communication" (a term coined by Kierkegaard himself for his writings). Instead of treating Kierkegaard's works of the 1840s as perfectly serious presentations of authorial meaning, Poole (literary theory, U. of Nottingham, England) shows how Kierkegaard, deploying the sorts of textual tools and devices associated today with Jacques Derrida, refuses to offer a personal view on any of his great themes: love, duty, faith, and the anguish before choice. Book Sculpture Workshops as Space and Concept

Download or read book Sculpture Workshops as Space and Concept written by Jane Fejfer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the multifaceted aspects of sculptor’s workshops from the Renaissance to the early nineteenth century. Contributors take a fresh look at the sculptor’s workshop as both a physical and discursive space. By studying some of the most prominent artists’ sculptural practices, the workshop appears as a multifaced, sociable and practical space. The book creates a narrative in which the sculptural workshop appears as a working laboratory where new measuring techniques, new materials and new instruments were tested and became part of the lived experience of the artist and central to the works coming into being. Artists covered include Donatello, Roubilliac, Thorvaldsen, Canova, and Christian Daniel Rauch. The book will be of interest to scholars studying art history, sculpture, artist workshops, and European studies.

Book Kierkegaard and the Staging of Desire

Download or read book Kierkegaard and the Staging of Desire written by Carl S. Hughes and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2014-07-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology in the modern era often assumes that the consummate form of theological discourse is objective prose—ignoring or condemning apophatic traditions and the spiritual eros that drives them. For too long, Kierkegaard has been read along these lines as a progenitor of twentieth-century neo-orthodoxy and a stern critic of the erotic in all its forms. In contrast, Hughes argues that Kierkegaard envisions faith fundamentally as a form of infinite, insatiable eros. He depicts the essential purpose of Kierkegaard’s writing as to elicit ever-greater spiritual desire, not to provide the satisfactions of doctrine or knowledge. Hughes’s argument revolves around close readings of provocative, disparate, and (in many cases) little-known Kierkegaardian texts. The thread connecting all of these texts is that they each conjure up some sort of performative “stage setting,” which they invite readers to enter. By analyzing the theological function of these texts, the book sheds new light on the role of the aesthetic in Kierkegaard’s authorship, his surprising affinity for liturgy and sacrament, and his overarching effort to conjoin eros for God with this-worldly love.
