Book Thomas Traherne and Seventeenth century Thought

Download or read book Thomas Traherne and Seventeenth century Thought written by Elizabeth S. Dodd and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2016 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Traherne has all too often been defined and studied as a solitary thinker, "out of his time", and not as a participant in the complex intellectual currents of the period. The essays collected here take issue with this reading, placing Traherne firmly in his historical context and situating his work within broader issues in seventeenth-century studies and the history of ideas. They draw on recently published textual discoveries alongside manuscripts which will soon be published for the first time. They address major themes in Traherne studies, including Traherne's understanding of matter and spirit, his attitude towards happiness and holiness, his response to solitude and society, and his Anglican identity. As a whole, the volume aims to re-ignite discussion on settled readings of Traherne's work, to reconsider issues in Traherne scholarship which have long lain dormant, and to supplement our picture of the man and his writings through new discoveries and insights. Elizabeth S. Dodd is programme leader for the MA in theology, ministry and mission and lecturer in theology, imagination and culture at Sarum College, Salisbury; Cassandra Gorman is lecturer in English at Trinity College, Cambridge. Contributors: Jacob Blevins, Warren Chernaik, Phoebe Dickerson, Elizabeth S. Dodd, Ana Elena Gonz lez-Trevi o, Cassandra Gorman, Carol Ann Johnston, Alison Kershaw, Kathryn Murphy

Book Boundless Innocence in Thomas Traherne s Poetic Theology

Download or read book Boundless Innocence in Thomas Traherne s Poetic Theology written by Elizabeth S. Dodd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth-century poet and divine Thomas Traherne finds innocence in every stage of existence. He finds it in the chaos at the origins of creation as well as in the blessed order of Eden. He finds it in the activities of grace and the hope of glory, but also in the trials of misery and even in the abyss of the Fall. Boundless Innocence in Thomas Traherne’s Poetic Theology traces innocence through Traherne’s works as it transgresses the boundaries of the estates of the soul. Using grammatical and literary categories it explores various aspects of his poetic theology of innocence, uncovering the boundless desire which is embodied in the yearning cry: ’Were all Men Wise and Innocent...’ Recovering and reinterpreting a key but increasingly neglected theme in Traherne’s poetic theology, this book addresses fundamental misconceptions of the meaning of innocence in his work. Through a contextual and theological approach, it indicates the unexplored richness, complexity and diversity of this theme in the history of literature and theology.

Book Happiness and Holiness

  • Author : Denise Inge
  • Publisher : Canterbury Press
  • Release : 2008-09-01
  • ISBN : 1853117897
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Happiness and Holiness written by Denise Inge and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17th century writer Thomas Traherne is increasingly being recognised and studied as a theologian as well as a poet. The discovery, in 1997, announced by the author of this volume, of five new prose works and a poetic work has given huge impetus to the study of Traherne in literature and theology. This affordable, concise introduction to Traherne's life and work concerns Traherne primarily as a theologian and places him in an historical and intellectual context he has thus far lacked. It demonstrates his distinctive contribution to Anglican theology. Consisting of a 10,000 word introductory essay and biography it is followed by extracts from Traherne's work under the following headings: Creatures and Powers, Holiness and Happiness, Sin and Salvation, Christian Liberty, Advice on Ministry, and Prayers.

Book Thomas Traherne Mystic and Poet

Download or read book Thomas Traherne Mystic and Poet written by Keith W. Salter and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is not primarily a work of literary criticism, nor would I claim to have made any significantly new contribution to our knowledge of the beliefs and modes of thought of seventeenth-century England. There is certainly an interest today in mysticism, a scholarly and a popular interest, but my concern lies chiefly in pointing out those qualities in the works of Thomas Traherne which may, in a real sense, be of use to a reader in our present times. That is to say, I wish to emphasize in Traherne the dignity of what Keats called the 'Life of Sensations', to explore the meaning of a word now, in some ways, debased, the word, enjoyment, and to attempt to make clear what may be the consequences of that most difficult of virtues, a genuine humility." - Preface [by] K. W. Salter, University of Exeter, June 1964.

Book British Literature and Spirituality

Download or read book British Literature and Spirituality written by Franz Karl Wöhrer and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the current state of research in the field of the spiritual in British literature, where spirituality is understood as a culturally-determined, universal phenomenon or a factuality of humanity, consisting of the living apprehension of the 'Sacred' during rare gratuitous moments of illumination. With critical essays by scholars working in various disciplines (English studies, music, the arts, psychology, theology, etc.), the book explores a corpus of encoded narratives of - as well as reflections on - the 'Sacred' in British literature, from the Late Middle Ages to the present. Multi-disciplinary in nature and interdisciplinary in method, British Literature and Spirituality illustrates the hermeneutic potential of readings that transcend the disciplinary boundaries of spiritual writings. • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-05-23

  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Children of God written by Edmund Newey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children of God uncovers the significant, but largely unnoticed, place of the child as a prototype of human flourishing in the work of four authors spanning the modern period. Shedding new light on the role of the child figure in modernity, and in theological responses to it, the book makes an important contribution to the disciplines of historical theology, theology and literature and ecumenical theology. Through a careful exploration of the continuities and differences in the work of Thomas Traherne, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Schleiermacher and Charles Péguy, it traces the ways in which their distinctive responses to human childhood structured the broader pattern of their theology, showing how they reached beyond the confines of academic theology and exercised a lasting influence on their literary and cultural context.

Book Fragile Mystics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Magdalen Smith
  • Publisher : SPCK
  • Release : 2015-11-19
  • ISBN : 0281073856
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book Fragile Mystics written by Magdalen Smith and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragile Mystics reworks traditional concepts of prayer and gives them a contemporary 'spin'. Like Steel Angels, it draws on the author's own experience as a Christian priest and offers illustrations from the world of visual arts, film and contemporary culture. It includes some biblical examples, and connects present day yearnings and wrestling's as a 'person who wants to pray better' with those of the mystics and holy people from the Christian past. It is about 'reclaiming' and transforming our inner spaces so that we have a renewed and hopeful approach to life and ministry. Each chapter has a short, sharp contemporary title, with a further subtitle to unpack the content, and ends with ideas for both individuals and leaders on how to put the concept under discussion into practice.
