This book was released on 1981 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th century saw a sad decline in the fortunes of the English handmade lace industry, yet in the East Midlands the period also witnessed some of its most interesting and remarkable designs. A key figure in this achievement was the Bedford lace merchant Thomas Lester. This book sets his designs and the development of his family business against the fashions of the period, the conditions in the industry and of its workers, and the relentless competition from machine made lace.

Book Bedfordshire Lace

Download or read book Bedfordshire Lace written by Jean Leader and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bedfordshire lace became popular in the fashions of the second half of the nineteenth century because of the beauty of its bold-open designs, often with elegant floral motifs, and it continues to fascinate and captivate lacemakers today. This practical book is dedicated to the novice and experienced lacemaker wishing to learn these techniques so as to realize this elegance for themselves. Information is given about the equipment needed for bobbin lacemaking, how to make a pricking (the pattern on which the lace is made), and how to wind thread on the bobbins. Instruction explains how to work cloth stitch and half stitch, plaits, windmill crossings, picots and leaf-shaped tallies, and how to finish a piece of lace. There is a series of twenty-six patterns, some traditional and others designed more recently. These are supported by instructions, photographs and diagrams. The patterns include small motifs, edgings - some with corners for handkerchiefs - butterflies and, finally, three exquisite collars.

Book Antique Lace

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lace, like silver or porcelain, can be classified by type and its date and place of origin often can be identified. But in the absence of marks giving maker or date, lace must be judged on its technical features and style. This new edition gathers fascinating and useful information in an easy to read and well-organised text covering needlepoint laces, embroideries, lace knitting and tatting, and bobbin laces made in Europe from the 16th century forward, including 19th century revivals. Each type is described and illustrated with hundreds of photographs and line drawings to show the technical characteristics and particular regard to the way one lace compares with another. A glossary, notes on cleaning, care, and conservation, and a price guide make this an essential reference for lace makers, designers, and lace collectors alike.

Book excerpt: Catherine Channer's committment to the handmade lace industry and its workers, and her first-hand knowledge of each, are illustrated in her book Lacemaking in the Midlands Past and Present, written in cooperation with her friend Margaret Roberts. Although published 90 years ago, this book has few modern rivals, and is reprinted here for the first time within a more extensive work by Anne Buck. As a young museum assistant at Luton, Anne Buck took private lessons in lacemaking from Catherine Channer and provides here a memoir of her life and career as a lacemaker, designer, teacher, and trader. She includes an account of the Lace Associations, with which Miss Channer became involved, and of their attempts to form a new framework for the industry. Finally, she shows how lacemaking evolved from a poorly paid cottage industry into a popular craft.
