Book The Last Trumpet

Download or read book The Last Trumpet written by James Arthur Brownlow and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century English slide trumpet was the last trumpet with the traditional sound of the old classic trumpet. The instrument was essentially a natural trumpet to which had been added a movable slide with a return mechanism. It was England's standard orchestral trumpet, despite the dominance of natural and, ultimately, valved instruments elsewhere, and it remained in use by leading English players until the last years of the century. The slide trumpet's dominating role in nineteenth-century English orchestral playing has been well documented, but until now, the use of the instrument in solo and ensemble music has been given only superficial consideration. Art Brownlow's study is a new and thorough assessment of the slide trumpet. It is the first comprehensive examination of the orchestral, ensemble and solo literature written for this instrument. Other topics include the precursors of the nineteenth-century instrument, its initial development and subsequent modifications, its technique, and the slide trumpet's slow decline. Appendices include checklists of English trumpeters and slide trumpetmakers.

Download or read book The Keyed Bugle written by Ralph Thomas Dudgeon and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of The Keyed Bugle is an expansion rather than a revision of the first edition. The performance practice discussion has been extended to cater to the needs of the reader who wishes to learn the instrument. All chapters contain new information, and the chapters on Performers, Makers and Sellers have been extensively expanded. An additional chapter offers an explanation of the peculiarly distinct acoustics of keyed bugles and provides an analysis of construction styles employed by particular makers. After closely researching instruments that have been documented by the signatures of specific firms and comparing them with unmarked examples, the author enables readers to make confident observations on the nature of regional and manufacturer's styles. The new research in this area provides the groundwork for informed speculation about the origins of undocumented keyed bugles. This work puts the best of current research on the instrument into book form and provides the collector, performer, and serious music student with a clear picture of the instrument's history, repertoire, and technique.

Book East Meets West

Download or read book East Meets West written by Edward H. Tarr and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waning years of the Russian Empire witnessed the development of a rich tradition of trumpet playing. Noted trumpet scholar and performer Edward Tarr's latest book illuminates this tradition, which is little known in the West. Tarr's extensive research in hitherto inaccessible Russian archives has uncovered many documents that illuminate the careers of noted performers. These documents are reproduced here for the first time. A concise chronological summary of Russian political and musical developments provides an effective backdrop for this inventory of trumpeters. The author ably demonstrates how profoundly Russian trumpet-playing and pedagogy were influenced by emigrées, particularly from Germany (Wilhelm Wurm, Willy Brandt, Oskar Böhme), and how Russian-born trumpeters like Vladimir Drucker subsequently influenced the American musical scene. In his Lexicon of Trumpeters, both Russian and 'Foreign, ' Active in Russia, Tarr supplements his own research with information from valuable but obscure secondary sources in Russian. This lexicon carries the story into the late twentieth century, and includes modern legendary figures such as Timofey Dokshizer. Book The Music Trade in Georgian England

Download or read book The Music Trade in Georgian England written by Michael Kassler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to today's music industry, whose principal products are recorded songs sold to customers round the world, the music trade in Georgian England was based upon London firms that published and sold printed music and manufactured and sold instruments on which this music could be played. The destruction of business records and other primary sources has hampered investigation of this trade, but recent research into legal proceedings, apprenticeship registers, surviving correspondence and other archived documentation has enabled aspects of its workings to be reconstructed. The first part of the book deals with Longman & Broderip, arguably the foremost English music seller in the late eighteenth century, and the firm's two successors - Broderip & Wilkinson and Muzio Clementi's variously styled partnerships - who carried on after Longman & Broderip's assets were divided in 1798. The next part shows how a rival music seller, John Bland, and his successors, used textual and thematic catalogues to advertise their publications. This is followed by a comprehensive review of the development of musical copyright in this period, a report of efforts by a leading inventor, Charles 3rd Earl Stanhope, to transform the ways in which music was printed and recorded, and a study of Georg Jacob Vollweiler's endeavour to introduce music lithography into England. The book should appeal not only to music historians but also to readers interested in English business history, publishing history and legal history between 1714 and 1830.

Book The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians

Download or read book The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians written by Stanley Sadie and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This reference classic has approximately doubled in size since its last publication 20 years ago, and the expansion involves more than the thorough revision and addition of articles about music of the past. More articles about 20th-century composers and composer-performers have been added, as well as topical articles about the gender-related, multicultural, and interdisciplinary ways that music is now being studied. Add to these changes that New Grove is also available online, making it a source that would have made its many-faceted creator Sir George Grove proud"--Outstanding reference sources, American Libraries, May 2002.
