Book excerpt: A thoroughly researched and insightful look at the life of Thomas Gustave Plant (1859-1941) who built a spectacular country house estate on more than 6000 acres in Moultonborough, NH. His estate, Lucknow, more commonly known as "Castle in the Clouds" is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The book provides a fascinating story of Plant's meteoric rise in the world of business. Beginning with an 8th grade education, he became known as a hard-headed, shrewd and courageous leader in the world of shoe manufacture. In an effort to avoid the monopolistic leasing practices of United Shoe Manufacturing Corporation, Tom secretly designed a complete line of shoe manufacturing machinery and with his Wonder Worker Shoe Machinery Company launched the "Shoe Machinery Wars". The later sale of his companies to United Shoe brought Tom great wealth. The United Shoe leasing practices which had been initially approved by United Shoe Board member Louis Brandeis became the subject of numerous lawsuits. Tom's marriage to Carolyn Griggs and their subsequent divorce is well documented as is their participation in the sporting world. Tom subsequently marries Olive Dewey and together they build their country estate. Plant had great vision for using his wealth. He built and endowed a retirement home for seniors in Bath, Maine. That home continues to be a vital resource today. He also built Bald Peak Colony Club, a highly regarded private country club with major affiliations around the country. Unfortunately, the financial burden of his three major projects coupled with global financial reverses left him in debt in his later years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few places in America that have such a rich variety of landscape and scenery as the Lakes Region of New Hampshire: from the summer calm of Squam Lake to the robust white winter mountaintops of the Gunstock Mountain Resort. So it is no surprise that the people who call it home reflect the same wide palette of humankind--from the pre-Revolutionary War surveyors who first marked their initials on a rock at Weirs Beach to Bob Lawton, the current owner of the world's largest arcade; from one of George Washington's inner circle to Ernest Thompson, the award-winning author of On Golden Pond. The Lakes Region draws them--or grows them--all, because it has it all.

Book Child Labor in Greater Boston 18801920

Download or read book Child Labor in Greater Boston 18801920 written by Ann Piper and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its earliest days, Boston decreed that its children be taught to read and write English and understand the laws. In 1826, free and compulsory education was introduced. The wish to educate the young conflicted with the great need for unskilled labor in the fields and factories. With adult wages low, schoolchildren helped their families by selling newspapers, shining shoes, hawking goods, or scavenging. On reaching 14 years of age, many children left school to find full-time work. Fearing that these children would end up in low-paying, dead-end jobs, Boston Public Schools added trade schools to teach craft skills--carpentry, printing, and metalwork for boys; dressmaking, cooking, and embroidery for girls. The national struggle to ban child labor began in the mid-19th century and ended with the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. This book describes the efforts in Boston and surrounding towns to keep children in school, at least until age 16, before permitting them to start work. The bulk of the images included were taken by Lewis Wickes Hine during his several visits to Boston between 1909 and 1917.
