Book A C Swinburne

Download or read book A C Swinburne written by Ricky Rooksby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) was one of the literary sensations of the Victorian period. His iconoclastic poetry and prose challenged attitudes to sex, politics, religion and censorship. Not only writing some of the most original lyric poetry of the time and pioneering criticism, Swinburne became a cultural icon. In the 1860s his very name was a symbol of progressive forces emerging in a repressive age. Readers across the world identified with the paganism and humanism of his poetry. Swinburne's was a turbulent life lived against a backdrop of beautiful settings in the Isle of Wight and Northumberland, and shared with a host of Victorian luminaries, or artists and writers such as D G Rossetti, Elizabeth Siddal, Burne-Jones, Morris and Simeon Solomon. It is a life touched by early tragedy and romantic disappointment, by extraordinary fame and abject loneliness, by masochism and alcoholism, but above all by an unquenchable vivacity. At the centre was the charmingly spoken, excitable genius whom Burne-Jones described as 'quite the most poetic personality I have ever known.' the artistic prodigy who seemed to have read almost everything, who was as happy revelling in the sea as in literary discourse. Based on new research and many unpublished letters, Rikky Rooksby sheds light on Swinburne's personality and relationships, and discusses how Swinburne's poetry develops from early pessimism to a recovered joy in the energies of the natural world. This biography is a sympathetic and fresh account of one of the most colourful figures in English literature.

What is the true doctrine of originalism? And which is more important: the spirit of the law, or the letter? The authors write with a well-argued point of view that is definitive yet nuanced, straightforward yet sophisticated.

Book excerpt: Irresistible photographs by one of the Cape's well-known locals, for those who love dogs and love Cape Cod, wherever you are now! DOGS ON CAPE COD will bring back the blissful feeling of those long walks on the Cape with your loving, furry companion, wherever you are right now. Anyone who has ever met Kim Roderiques, even on one occasion, knows of her pure affection, and, quite frankly, her obsession with dogs. Having had dogs throughout her life, it wasn't until Kim reached adulthood that she began to comprehend the incredible gift they give to us. This book began when Kim's dear friend arrived on the Cape with her new puppy, a Cavalier King Charles, named Murphy. From the first moment Kim photographed the puppy, she began to see the Cape in a very different light; she saw it through Murphy's eyes. His wonderment of seeing everything for the very first time, made it evident how much he loved his home. And, with that, the idea was born to publish a book capturing the love that dogs have for this unique environment. DOGS ON CAPE COD conveys the special happiness the Cape has to offer every kind of dog. "It's the sand, it's the water, it's the light, it's the freedom, it's each other," says Kim about dogs and Cape Cod. DOGS ON CAPE COD takes you on a photographic journey through the Cape, witnessing a wide variety of dogs enjoying their very favorite activities in this special place. It features humorous, poignant, and endearing photos of dogs of every age, from puppies to elderly dogs. Whether pure bred or mixed, their importance in our lives always proves to be extraordinary. This book captures the heart and soul of dogs on Cape Cod. You may leave the Cape, but you never leave it behind. Book has 251 color photographs printed on 100# paper

In a female culture built on Photoshopped perfection and Pinterest fantasies, we’ve lost the ability to dream our own big dreams. So busy trying to do it all and have it all, we’ve missed the life we were really designed for. And we are paying the price. The rise of loneliness, depression, and anxiety among the female population in Western cultures is at an all-time high. Overall, women are two and a half times more likely to take antidepressants than men. What is it about our culture, the expectations, and our way of life that is breaking women down in unprecedented ways? In this vulnerable memoir of transformation, Rebekah Lyons shares her journey from Atlanta, Georgia, to the heart of Manhattan, where she found herself blindsided by crippling depression and anxiety. Overwhelmed by the pressure to be domestically efficient, professionally astute, and physically attractive, Rebekah finally realized that freedom can come only by facing our greatest fears and fully surrendering to God’s call on our lives. This book is an invitation for all women to take that first step toward freedom. For it is only when we free-fall that we can truly fly.
