Ironcross Castle was called cursed by the Highlanders. Its most recent lairds had perished in accidents, falls, or fires. The newest owner, Gavin Kerr, did not fear death. It was feeling that he dreaded--the pain of betrayal and loss. Now he arrived at the castle to hear of hauntings and cults and to be drawn to the portrait of beautiful Joanna MacInnes, who died here amid a furnace of flame. And looking at her, Gavin desired her, feeling an impossible longing to take her in his arms. OR TO BURN... The real Joanna MacInnes had escaped the fire that claimed her kin. For months she has walked Ironcross by night, hiding in its secret passageways, searching for the truth behind the castle's curse. Now she feared it would claim Gavin Kerr. Yet warning him, touching him in the darkness, soon ignited another kind of burning. And even as her lips opened beneath his, she knew time was running out before they faced a heartless villain...a terrifying secret...and a struggle between eternal darkness and the power of undying love. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you enjoyed Jane Eyre, you’ll want to try this exciting medieval Highlander novel. Book excerpt: From the pen of the legendary historical novelist Jean Plaidy comes the story of Princess Margaret Tudor, whose life of tragedy, bloodshed, and scandal would rival even that of her younger brother, Henry VIII. Princess Margaret Tudor is the greatest prize when her father, Henry VII, negotiates the Treaty of Perpetual Peace with neighboring Scotland. The betrothal is meant to end decades of bloody border wars, but it becomes a love match: To Margaret’s surprise, she finds joy in her marriage to the dashing James IV of Scotland, a man sixteen years her senior. But the marriage, and the peace it brings to both nations, does not last. When King James is struck down by the armies of Henry VIII, Margaret—Princess of England, but Queen of Scotland—finds herself torn between loyalty to the land and family of her birth and to that of her baby son, now King of the Scots. She decides to remain in Scotland and carve out her own destiny, surviving a scandalous second marriage and battling with both her son and her brother to the very end. Like all the Tudors, Margaret’s life would be one of turmoil and controversy, but through her descendants, England and Scotland would unite as one nation, under one rule, and find peace.

Book excerpt: "Thistle and Rose" is a heartwarming novel written by Amy Walton. Set in the idyllic English countryside, the story follows the lives of two young girls, Thistle and Rose, who come from very different backgrounds but forge a deep and lasting friendship. Thistle, a spirited and independent girl, lives in a humble cottage with her elderly grandmother. She is resourceful and imaginative, finding joy in the simple pleasures of nature and the beauty of her surroundings. Thistle loves spending time in the woods, exploring the meadows, and cherishing the company of animals. On the other hand, Rose belongs to a well-to-do family living in a grand mansion nearby. Although Rose has material comforts, she often feels lonely and stifled by her strict upbringing. She yearns for the freedom that Thistle seems to enjoy effortlessly. One day, fate brings Thistle and Rose together, and they become instant friends. Despite their differences in social standing, the girls discover a shared love for adventure and a deep connection with nature. Thistle introduces Rose to her world of exploration and wonder, while Rose offers Thistle glimpses of the opportunities that lie beyond her humble cottage. Throughout the novel, Thistle and Rose face various challenges and triumphs, each learning valuable life lessons from the other. Their friendship strengthens as they navigate the complexities of family, societal expectations, and personal growth. As the seasons change, so do the girls' experiences and perspectives. Together, they face adversity, support each other's dreams, and learn the value of true friendship. Their bond transcends social barriers, proving that genuine connections are not confined by class or wealth. "Thistle and Rose" is a delightful tale of friendship, self-discovery, and the enchanting beauty of nature. Amy Walton's evocative writing transports readers to the lush English countryside, where the innocent joys of childhood and the power of friendship are celebrated. The novel gently explores themes of social inequality, empathy, and the importance of cherishing the little moments that make life special. Thistle and Rose's journey resonates with readers of all ages, as it captures the essence of youth and the universal desire for genuine connections."

  • Author : Shiona Airlie

  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Thistle and Bamboo written by Shiona Airlie and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial civil servant, Confucian scholar, and collector of Chinese art, Sir James Stewart Lockhart spent more than forty years in Hong Kong and Weihaiwei — the former British leased territory in northern China. His career reflects tension and upheaval in the emerging colony of Hong Kong and in a China rapidly giving way to civil war. In her vivid biography of Stewart Lockhart, Shiona Airlie presents a portrait of an imperial official who fought against racism, strove to preserve the Chinese way of life, and was treated by Chinese mandarins as one of their own. Sir James Stewart Lockhart (1858–1937) was a Scot who served for more than 40 years as a colonial official in Hong Kong and Weihaiwei — Britain’s leased territory in northern China. In Hong Kong (1879– 1902) he rose to the highest levels and brought a refreshingly different approach to colonial rule. He immersed himself in Chinese culture, made friends with local leaders, strengthened Chinese institutions, and fought against racism. When the colony was extended in 1898 he was given the important task of delineating the boundaries of the New Territories and organising its administration. As Britain's first Civil Commissioner (1902–21) in remote Weihaiwei, he brought a unique approach to administration — a combination of Scottish laird and Confucian mandarin — and maintained peace and order during troubled times. A fine Chinese scholar, he amassed a large collection of Chinese coins, art and artefacts. Shiona Airlie's lively account of Stewart Lockhart's life and times makes use of his private papers and extensive archival research. This classic study provides valuable insight into the character, career and friends of an imperial official of rare talent and achievement.
