Book excerpt: Founded in 1930 as the result of efforts by several black Catholic laywomen, Queen of Angels was the first African American Catholic congregation in Newark, New Jersey. The church quickly embarked on an outreach campaign that endured for decades and affected the entire Newark community - black and white, Catholic and Protestant. By the 1960's, many people looked to Queen of Angels as a model of social and civil rights activism. In A Mission for Justice, Mary Ward places Queen of Angles within its broader historical, religious, and social context and explores the church's struggle for justice within the Catholic Church and in society as a whole. The reach of Queen of Angels extended far beyond its own membership. For example, while riots erupted in other cities across the country after the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., Queen of Angels played an instrumental role in organizing the Walk for Understanding, a peaceful march of twenty-five thousand blacks and whites through the heart of the inner city. That event and the ethos that inspired it gave birth to the New Community Corporation, the largest nonprofit housing corporation in the country, led by former Queen of Angels priest, William Linder. Today, Queen of Angels is one of several African American Catholic parishes in Newark, and its mission is now more pastoral than activist. But the church continues as a home to various community based programs working to improve the lives of Newark's residents. Based on nine years of research, A Mission for Justice draws on oral histories of parishioners, pastors, nuns, and layworkers at Queen of Angels as well as on documents from various private collections. Ward's study will be valuable reading for those interested in African American and church history as well as the history of social activism and the Civil Rights Movement. The Author: Mary A. During the 1930s, farming communities waged a campaign of "passive resistance" against Tithe Rentcharge, the modern version of medieval tithe. Led by the National Tithepayers' Association, farmers refused to pay the charge, disrupted auctions of seized stock and joined demonstrations to prevent action by bailiffs. The National Government condemned their "unconstitutional action", ruled out changes in the law and mobilised police to support the titheowners. Meanwhile, the Church of England and lay titheowners - including Oxford and Cambridge colleges, public schools and major landowners - sought to vindicate their right to tithe; in a particularly shameful episode, the Church established a secret company to buy taken produce and remove it from farms. This "tithe war" was fought outside farms, in the courts, in the press and in the wider arena of public opinion. It posed problems for the Church, legal system, and every political party; split the National Farmers' Union; and provided opportunities for the British Union of Fascists and other sections of the extreme right to cause disturbance. Drawing on extensive archival research, accounts in local newspapers, and private papers, John Bulaitis traces the evolution of what has been described as this "curious rural revolt", from the late nineteenth century to its climax in 1936, when the Tithe Act brought an end to this form of tax.

Book excerpt: This is the long overdue history of the two Royal Ulster Rifles battalions during the Second World War. Although there was a healthy rivalry between the battalions, both reserved their fighting skills for the luckless enemy. At the outbreak of the war the 1st Battalion was garrisoned in India whereas the 2nd went to France with the BEF. Indeed the title of this book is credited to Major General Bernard Montgomery who was commanding 3rd Division during the retreat to Dunkirk. On hearing that the RUR were in the line, he reputedly exclaimed, 'it's alright then _ the Rifles are there'. After arduous training both battalions landed in Normandy on D-Day; the 1st by gliders as part of 6th Airlanding Brigade and the 2nd with 9th Brigade of 3rd Division on SWORD Beach. Indeed the RUR have the unique distinction of being the only British regiment to be represented on D-Day by both regular battalions. In addition numerous Riflemen were in 9th Parachute Battalion (commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Terence Otway, himself a Rifles' Officer) and there is a full description of the legendary assault on the Merville Battery. This well-researched work goes on to describe the long slog through North West Europe to the heart of Germany. Of the many fierce engagements that the battalions fought, those in the Ardennes during the German counter-attack and the massive Rhine Crossing Operation (VARSITY) deserve special mention.There were numerous battles, both major and minor, where the Rifles' legendary fighting skills and courage were put to the test.
