Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Femme-Enfant tells the story of Mamere (Corean Pennyman) and her three sisters, Anna, Mary and Queen from 1900 to 1995 from the dusty roads of rural Cotton Valley, Plain Dealing, Sarepta and Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana to Harrison Pennymans mansion atop Nob Hill in San Francisco and the glitz of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California. Mamere (Corean Pennyman) and James Glasgow II were lovers for almost fifty years. He married Diccie Bastille Glasgow when he was eighteen years old. Their marriage ended a land boundary feud that had burned and smouldered between the two families for three generations. Their son, Alexander Glasgow married Jacintha Marguarite Pennyman, Mameres granddaughter, who gave birth to triplets at age fourteen. His mother banished Alexander to Paris. He became a famous painter. Jacintha was secretly locked away in an undisclosed asylum. Diccie Bastille Glasgow sent her chauffeur with a lone crib to Mameres house. Inside the crib was a tiny tot named Harrison Pennyman. She raised the remaining two siblings as her only grandchildren. Their complexion was much lighter than Harrisons was. After thirty-three years, Harrison is finally reunited with his siblings, Deidre and Dalton Glasgow but not before the murder of Andrew Blackwell. He was a co-conspirator in a major art theft ring which was determined to steal the exquisite painting, La Femme-Enfant (The Woman Child) by Alexander Glasgow, his father, during the grand opening of Manslink and McKennas Art Gallery in Beverly Hills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does human mortality after age 110 continue to rise, level off, or start to decline? This book describes a concerted, international research effort undertaken with the goal of establishing a database that allows the best possible description of the mortality trajectory beyond the age of 110. The International Database on Longevity (IDL) is the result of this ongoing effort. The IDL contains exhaustive information on validated cases of supercentenarians (people 110 years and older) and allows unbiased estimates of mortality after age 110. The main finding is remarkable: human mortality after age 110 is flat at a probability of death of 50% per year. The sixteen chapters of this book discuss age validation of exceptional longevity, data on supercentenarians in a series of countries, structure and contents of the IDL, and statistical analysis of human mortality after age 110. Several chapters include short accounts of specific supercentenarians that add life to demographic research.

Book Security and Migration in the 21st Century

Download or read book Security and Migration in the 21st Century written by Elspeth Guild and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century has brought new and challenging dimensions to our understanding of security and migration. The old Cold War framework of security as related to war and peace, international relations and foreign affairs has given way to a multiplicity of competing notions, including internal security, human security and even social security. At the same time, migration has become a hotly contested issue, characterised by an enormous difference of views and objectives. So what do we mean by security and migration in the contemporary world? How do these two important fields intersect? And what does this collision of policy concerns and public interests mean for states and individuals alike? In this cutting-edge book, Elspeth Guild seeks to answer these pressing questions, drawing on a wide range of recent examples from the impact of asylum seekers on state border security to identity security in citizenship rules to illustrate her arguments. By approaching the topic from the perspective of the individual – citizen of one state, migrant in another – the book examines key aspects of the security-migration nexus, such as the relationship with refugees; torture; extraordinary rendition; privacy and the retention of personal data; and human rights' protection. The first volume in Polity's new 'Dimensions of Security' series, this book is a must-read for all students of international politics, development studies and related fields.

Book Bomber Command

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roddy MacKenzie
  • Publisher : Air World
  • Release : 2023-02-16
  • ISBN : 1399017756
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Bomber Command written by Roddy MacKenzie and published by Air World. This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roddy MacKenzie’s father served in Bomber Command during the Second World War, but like so many brave veterans who had survived the war, he spoke little of his exploits. So, when Roddy started on his personal journey to discover something of what his father had achieved, he uncovered a great deal about the devastating effectiveness of Bomber Command and the vital role it played in the defeat of Third Reich. He realised that the true story of Bomber Command’s achievements has never been told nor fully acknowledged. Roddy became a man on a mission, and this startlingly revealing, and often personal study, is the result. Bomber Command: Churchill's Greatest Triumph takes the reader through the early days of the Second World War and introduces all the key individuals who turned the Command into the war-winning weapon it eventually became, as well as detailing the men and machines which flew night after night into the heart of Hitler’s Germany. The main focus of his book is the destruction and dislocation wrought by the bombing to reduce, and ultimately destroy, Germany’s ability to make war. In his analysis, Roddy dug deep into German archival material to uncover facts rarely presented to either German or English language readers. These demonstrate that Bomber Command’s continual efforts, at appalling cost in aircrew casualties and aircraft losses, did far more damage to the Reich than the Allies knew. Roddy’s father served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and Roddy naturally highlights its contribution to Bomber Command’s successes, another aspect of this fascinating story which the author believes has not been duly recognized. Bomber Command: Churchill's Greatest Triumph will certainly raise the debate on the controversial strategy adopted by ‘Bomber’ Harris and how he was perceived by many to have over-stepped his remit. But most of all, this book will revise people’s understanding of just how important the endeavours were of those men who flew through the dark and through the searchlights, the flak, and the enemy night fighters, to bring the Second World War in Europe to its crushing conclusion.

Book Jordan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan George
  • Publisher : Zed Books Ltd.
  • Release : 2013-07-18
  • ISBN : 184813715X
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Jordan written by Alan George and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordan has played a bigger role in Middle Eastern affairs than its size and economy might warrant, due to its huge Palestinian population, its strategic location between Israel, the West Bank, Syria and Iraq, and its uniquely close relationship with successive British and US administrations. Drawing on numerous visits to the country and interviews with a diversity of people from King Abdullah down, Alan George describes how its reasonably stable monarchical system, unlike that in most Arab countries, has allowed the halting development of civil society and maintained control through the skilful co-option of opponents rather than heavy-handed reliance on its secret police. What is daily life like? How do its parliamentary system and political parties work? How free are the media? What are the future prospects of this buffer 'state without a nation'?
