Book Grandma s Remedies

Download or read book Grandma s Remedies written by Cherry Chappell and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before modern medicines became so widely available, families treated everyday illnesses with home-made remedies. Reused and refined year after year, they were handed down through the generations then lovingly copied into personal 'receipt' books. Grandma's Remedies brings together a beguiling collection of them, gathered from dusty medicine chests found in attics, recalled from childhoods long past, or discovered in family archives and libraries. Many of them are surprisingly effective. Did you know, for example, that drinking two cups of strong black coffee will alleviate an asthma attack? Or that chewing toasted fennel seeds will help combat indigestion? Or that rosehip syrup is a terrific source of vitamin C? But Grandma's Remedies is more than a guide to these traditional treatments, it also paints a vivid portrait of the world of our grandparents and great-grandparents. It shows how inventive and resourceful they were with the materials near to hand, how they made the most of everything in the store-cupboard, from bread through to vinegar, and how it was the women of the household who, despite being barred from the medical profession, were relied on to safeguard family health. In these days of antibiotics and painkillers, it's easy to forget how people survived when all they had to rely on was a garden, a larder and a healthy dose of common sense.

Book excerpt: Longlisted for the 2022 National Book Award A Washington Post, Chicago Review of Books, Kirkus, and Christian Science Monitor Best Book of the Month “Inventive, funny and moving.” —The New York Times Book Review Translated from the German by Damion Searls Winner of the German Book Prize, Saša Stanišic’s inventive and surprising novel asks: what makes us who we are? In August, 1992, a boy and his mother flee the war in Yugoslavia and arrive in Germany. Six months later, the boy’s father joins them, bringing a brown suitcase, insomnia, and a scar on his thigh. Saša Stanišic’s Where You Come From is a novel about this family, whose world is uprooted and remade by war: their history, their life before the conflict, and the years that followed their escape as they created a new life in a new country. Blending autofiction, fable, and choose-your-own-adventure, Where You Come From is set in a village where only thirteen people remain, in lost and made-up memories, in coincidences, in choices, and in a dragons’ den. Translated by Damion Searls, it’s a novel about homelands, both remembered and imagined, lost and found. A book that playfully twists form and genre with wit and heart to explore questions that lie inside all of us: about language and shame, about arrival and making it just in time, about luck and death, about what role our origins and memories play in our lives.

Book The unseen colors of the 40 s

Download or read book The unseen colors of the 40 s written by Marc Jean Di Maggio and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-03-18 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I was looking at a black and white picture I could neither see nor understand whether those real lively colors did exist at the exact moment the photograph was shot. I realized only later, talking to my relatives and friends, that, although the lack of colors gave the photo a look of antique, these colors were remembered only by the people who were present at the moment the photo was taken. Staring at the picture, the impossible love of a desperate sailor for the beautiful Eneride began to take shape, to be then consumed in a lifetime. I could see in the traditions of a village, the Shipwrights that revealed to a few favorite the hidden soul of all their masterpieces. The parallel story of Elpidio and Atanasio, the two leading characters who discover how important they are one for the other, comes out from the events taking place in that village deeply offended by constant bombing as well as by the effect of constant and ignorant gossip. This is the story of the Shipwright and the Sailor.

Book Forests of Belonging

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephanie Karin Rupp
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2011-12-01
  • ISBN : 0295803029
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Forests of Belonging written by Stephanie Karin Rupp and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests of Belonging examines the history and ongoing transformation of ethnic and social relationships among four distinct communities--Bangando, Baka, Bakwéle, and Mbomam--in the Lobéké forest region of southeastern Cameroon. By slotting forest communities into ecological categories such as "hunters" and "gatherers," previous analyses of social relationships in tropical forests have resulted in binary frameworks that render real-life relationships invisible and that have perpetuated correspondingly misleading labels, such as "pygmy." Through rich descriptive detail resulting from field work among the Bangando, Stephanie Rupp illustrates the complexity of social ties among groups and individuals, and their connections with the natural world. She demonstrates that social and ethno-ecological relations in equatorial African forests are nuanced, contested, and shifting, and that the intricacy of these links must be considered in the design and implementation of aid policies and strategies for conservation and development.
