Book This Is the American Forces Network

Download or read book This Is the American Forces Network written by Patrick Morley and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2001-01-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, radio broadcasts were fundamental to the morale of the allied troops. When Americans attempted to establish their own network, the Armed Forces Network (AFN), the BBC initially resisted. This documented account of the disputes between Britain and the United States in regard to the airwaves illustrates how, despite the tensions and with the intervention of General Eisenhower and Winston Churchill, the relationship succeeded. It details the political machinations with which the BBC attempted to thwart the development of the AFN and the strategies by which the Americans established and operated the network. It was not long before the AFN captivated a wide British audience and introduced it to the American big bands, such as the Glenn Miller orchestra, and entertainers like Jack Benny and Bob Hope. The tensions and compromises between the two broadcasting networks reflected the disagreements and concessions characteristic of the overall Anglo-American alliance. This lively chronicle of the frictions between the BBC and the AFN, and the portrait it paints of wartime Britain will appeal to a number of audiences, from scholars of the history of broadcasting, to wartime music buffs, to those interested in the politics of World War II, and to the veterans who served in the war.

Book Network Nations

Download or read book Network Nations written by Michele Hilmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Network Nations, Michele Hilmes reveals and re-conceptualizes the roots of media globalization through a historical look at the productive transnational cultural relationship between British and American broadcasting. Though frequently painted as opposites--the British public service tradition contrasting with the American commercial system--in fact they represent two sides of the same coin. Neither could have developed without the constant presence of the other, in terms not only of industry and policy but of aesthetics, culture, and creativity, despite a long history of oppositional rhetoric. Based on primary research in British and American archives, Network Nations argues for a new transnational approach to media history, looking across the traditional national boundaries within which media is studied to encourage an awareness that media globalization has a long and fruitful history. Placing media history in the framework of theories of nationalism and national identity, Hilmes examines critical episodes of transnational interaction between the US and Britain, from radio’s amateurs to the relationship between early network heads; from the development of radio features and drama to television spy shows and miniseries; as each other’s largest suppliers of programming and as competitors on the world stage; and as a network of creative, business, and personal relationships that has rarely been examined, but that shapes television around the world. As the global circuits of television grow and as global regions, particularly Europe, attempt to define a common culture, the historical role played by the British/US media dialogue takes on new significance.

Book The Implementation of Network Centric Warfare

Download or read book The Implementation of Network Centric Warfare written by and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2005 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world enters a new millennium, the U.S. military simultaneously enters a new era in warfare -- an era in which warfare is affected by a changing strategic environment and rapid technological change. The United States and its multinational partners are experiencing a transition from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. Simultaneously, it is fully engaged in a global war on terrorism set in a new period of globalization. These changes, as well as the experiences gained during recent and ongoing military operations, have resulted in the current drive to transform the force with network-centric warfare (NCW) as the centerpiece of this effort. This document describes how the tenets and principles of NCW are providing the foundation for developing new warfighting concepts, organizations, and processes that will allow U.S. forces to maintain a competitive advantage over potential adversaries, now and in the future. In sum, the report provides an overview of the ongoing implementation of NCW in the Department of Defense (DoD). A brief description of NCW, including its origins, its central role in force transformation, its tenets and principles, and an implementation strategy, are provided in Chapter 1. An examination of NCW as an emerging theory of war, its relationship to the four domains of Information Age warfare, the growing evidence of its benefits, and the warfighting advantages it can provide are examined in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 focuses on network-centric operations (NCO), including the relationship of NCO to the overarching Joint Operations Concepts (JOpsC), the NCO experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, the development of the NCO Conceptual Framework, and the conduct of NCO case studies. An overview of Joint and Service plans and initiatives to develop and implement network-centric capabilities and the growing investment in these capabilities by our allies and multinational partners are provided in Chapter 4.

Book Using American Forces Network AFN for Explosives Safety

Download or read book Using American Forces Network AFN for Explosives Safety written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Army Forces Command and Defense Ammunition Center receives continuous safety issues pertaining to the use of ammunition or ammo related weapons. These safety issues often involve serious injuries to service members. FORSCOM, DAC, and U.S. Army Joint Munitions Command agreed to formulate a television safety campaign in order to expedite safety messages to deployed service members and those awaiting deployment. Safety issues addressed since 2008 include: Taping grenades, UXO souvenirs, M2 headspace and timing, FOG v. Smoke grenades, storing ammo, removing ammo from battle damaged vehicles, loading ammo at ASPs, receiving ammo from ASPs and safeguarding original packaging. To date, JMC Public Affairs has created 10-30 second TV spots--or PSAs, Public Service Announcements-using 20 animation which air on the American Forces Network on the Freedom Channel in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq. This channel is also broadcast in dining facilities at major training areas in Germany and on closed circuit television at Ft. Lewis and Camp Zama, Japan. The 20 animated characters were developed based on the PS magazine concept of using cartoon characters to portray problems and solutions to ammo issues. The two main characters are always corrected by a senior NCO and the main message/corrective measure emphasized in the tag line Informal feedback from LARS and QASAs, company commanders, Reserve Soldiers and others indicates the PSAs are effective in getting the message out and the 20 characters are attracting the attention of the target audience. JMC Public Affairs will continue to produce PSAs as needed and will continue to develop new broadcast strategies always working in conjunction with and as directed by DAC and FORSCOM Safety.
